Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The new HFP chat thread – Sunday 21st June

We have decided to run this new daily chat thread on Head for Points.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the defacto repository for random comments and questions.  It is unlikely that the news flow will be so big over the next few weeks that we will need many ‘Bits’ articles, however.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are stuck at home self-isolating, we want the HFP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as its keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HFP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/06/21/the-new-hfp-chat-thread-sunday-21st-june/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

We will continue to monitor how this is working.  Let’s see how it goes.  Take care!

I’m changing job and have around 34k Amex points in my Amex corporate card. Can I transfer those points to my personal Amex account? Or do I need to transfer them to any program before cancelling the card? I already have more than 700k avios, so I don’t really need more, but I don’t know if I would use any other program in the future. Thanks!

    • Rob says:

In theory you should only have one Membership Rewards account anyway. I am guessing Amex can move one to the other with no issues – they have no problem moving points between MR accounts across different countries.

  • Neil says:

I’m interested in reading some of the hotel reviews that have popped up on HFP Instagram. (Eg Venice) It says follow link in bio. The only link I can find just takes me to the BA (improved) pay review article. Am an Instagram newbie – where should I be clicking? Thanks!

    • Tariq says:

‘Link in bio’ probably gets updated depending on the latest post topic.

If you go into the ‘my favourite hotel’ post on the site today, there is a link to the index page for all the reviews in the first paragraph.

    • Travel Strong says:

Instagram only let you put 1 x ‘link in bio’ at any one time. Therefore the link is set to the latest publicised story. If you are looking at a previous instagram post (e.g. about a hotel review), any comment about checking out the ‘link in bio’ is no longer correct.

Best thing to do is use the search feature at the top of this page – you will find everything you want!

    • Rhys says:

We normally have a link to a page with multiple links to specific pages but the service we used was down on Friday. But even then, the links only work for a day or two before they get replaced with the next day’s ones. Sorry!

  • Jeff says:

I had two Virgin flight refunds owing at different points in March on two different cards. Both have been made so looks like the issue is being addressed now

    • Blindman says:

When did you cancel the flights and did you get any communication that the refund was paid?

I cancelled a flight on 7th April and am still waiting. My 90 days is next week but have been told it’s “will be before 120.”

      • Jeff says:

The flights themselves were for April, we cancelled one around March 7 and the other a week later
I got a communication by email for one of them but the other just appeared back on the card (one was Virgin card and the other Amex)

    • Rob says:

Result. I was told I will get mine from April on 27th July, which was weirdly precise.

  • Mark says:

Total guess work, I know, but what aircraft do we think BA will likely use to replace the 747 on their LHR – LAS route (assuming they are all retired as expected). Currently booked in 62 J/K for Sept. If it goes ahead (that’s a big if) I’d love to see the 787 on the route but my guess would be the 777.

    • Travel Strong says:

Norwegian chose to stop flying their 787’s to LAS in summer season, as a normal loaded 787 inc cargo was too heavy for the lower air density and runway length combination in high heat.

BA may not have this issue, may be lighter due to a bigger first/economy class, may be willing to carry less cargo, etc. ……….. but a 777 is much more likely, even without this issue. Ideal future A350 route IMO.

      • Travel Strong says:

Nb. Virgin fly the 787 from LAS in summer, so the weight issue is certainly not insurmountable.

      • Mark says:

Ah yes, the A350 and the new club suite would be the dream but probably unlikely on a leisure dominated route. We can dream though 🙂

  • BA query says:

Need to call BA for a refund. Is their customer service available for refunds on Sundays? If yes, does anyone know the time they open?

  • Doc says:

    Question regarding Amex offers.
I swapped my Amex Gold charge card to Gold credit card 2 months ago.
Have put a bit of spend on it but still have no offers on it at all which seems strange.
It is linked to my Amex account but this has never happened before.
Any ideas why since I had lots of them on my charge card?

    • Charlieface says:

Seems to be an ongoing issue with some accounts. Try removing it from online services then re-adding it, sometimes helps.

BA CityFlyer will suspend its London City – Isle of Man route from 13 September 2020. It is unclear the reason for its suspension

  • Tyra says:

Was BA cutting the Helsinki route covered on HfP? What’s the rationale? All the flights I’ve ever been on have been at full capacity. It was also a great way to pick up tier points and visit my god-daughter at the same time.

    • Rob says:

No, because it came on gradually – there was no announcement and it wasn’t clear if it was a temporary move or not for a while. We’re just assuming now that it’s not coming back.

      • Matthew says:

They cancelled my LHR-HEL flight for 3 Jan months ago. Route pulled entirely apparently.
