The new HFP chat thread – Friday 19th June

We have decided to run this new daily chat thread on Head for Points.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the defacto repository for random comments and questions.  It is unlikely that the news flow will be so big over the next few weeks that we will need many ‘Bits’ articles, however.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are stuck at home self-isolating, we want the HFP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as its keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HFP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/06/19/the-new-hfp-chat-thread-friday-19th-june/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

We will continue to monitor how this is working.  Let’s see how it goes.  Take care!

  • Baji Nahid says:

Has anyone submitted an Section75 with their IHG card before and know how long it takes? Been around 7 weeks since I submitted my section 75 claim against virgin but no reply from them yet at all.

    • ChrisC says:

I put in a claim to MBNA re Finnair and they were very open in that it would be 45 days before they would be able to even look at the claim let alone get it resolved,

Everywhere is just so stretched at the moment.

    • Pat the Postie says:

Took me 3 weeks to cancel their card by email/letter

  • John says:

    Does Curve use Wirecard?

    • Genghis says:

Currently yes, but plan to bring in house end of month. Not seen any further updates.

  • John W says:

Last night, I was watching Heathrow arrivals and noticed the inbound flight from Larnaca to Heathrow was operated by 777, not a320 as advertised. Does anyone know if this is something they may do more often ? ( BA662 and BA663 yesterday both 777)
Obviously interested in business seat on here for my September trip than a A320 !

  • Thinking Point says:

My LHR-MAD British Airways flight is still showing as fine but the connecting Iberia flight from Madrid to Tangier has been cancelled. Same on return. Can I apply for a refund with BA as I booked the entire journey on Ba.com or do I need to wait for all flights to be cancelled. If yes to the former option, is the quickest route via Flyer Talk rep or calling BA these days?

    • Marcw says:

You can ask for a refund if a portion of your itinerary has been cancelled. Thats your case.

    • Jonathan says:

Please don’t use the FlyerTalk rep as first line for anything. They’ve been absolutely swamped after being publicised on here & other sites & are now considering packing it in. It’s only ever been intended for complex issues that frontline customer service agents are struggling to get their heads round not as a shortcut in periods of high demand.

      • NvT1115 says:

Jonathan I would second that. The Flyertalk Rep resolved a very complex situation when my wife’s father died. They should only be contacted in absolute extremis not for things that already have mechanisms in place – we all just need to be a patient in current times

    • Anna says:

Ring BA and ask for a refund. They have been very quick in answering recently and refunds have been appearing within a couple of weeks.

      • Ming the Merciless says:

2 hrs for a fully flex F OHA LHR HKG. refund hit my amex before the original debit? MR points or platinum bonus MR points.

  • jil says:

Does creation IHG credit card still charge cash interest to top up revolut?

  • Andrew says:

Unsurprisingly, it seems BA crew are planning a strike once meaningful flying resumes.

    • TGLoyalty says:

So they should BA is being opportunistic

      • Secret Squirrel says:

Anyone had funds sent to IHG creation card credit account this week?
I sent payment over on Mon, still not credited this morning?

        • Neil Donoghue says:

Same! Sent a payment on Monday and still now showing. Money has even been deducted from my current account.

          • Anna says:

Some of us commented yesterday that IHG/Creation is being very slow to update this week.

        • Sandra says:

You can call them to query, although site says there could be delays I got through almost immediately last month when I rang to query why I’d been charged a late payment fee when the account was in credit. My payment this month left my account Sunday (bank transfer) and was showing on IHG account Weds backdated to Sunday

        • Julie says:

I made payment late Sunday and had been credited when I looked Walt Tuesday. This was using a debit card.

    • GaryC says:

To what end? It will be too late at that point to change BA’s course. Redundancies and changes to working conditions will already have happened. And I’m sure there will be plenty of other flight and cabin crew from Virgin, RyanAir etc who would gladly take their roles. Bitter as it may be, like for all of us, it’s a case of adjusting to a “new normal”.

      • Chris Heyes says:

GaryC @ I agree get ready for the “New Normal” expect to see strikes next Easter, Summer.
Prob for many years to come

        • GaryC says:

I disagree. There will be a surplus of people in the labour market with the skills and willingness to perform flight and cabin crew roles for a number of years. Anyone with a job will know that should they lose it, not only can they be readily replaced, it will be tough to get another one, and absolutely impossible to get one with better conditions, so will be fearful of losing it. With the changes to T&C and breakup of the legacy and MF structures, contractual bargaining positions will already have been lost. People who are not grounded in this reality may still of course choose to strike for emotional reasons, but it will be quickly crushed.

          • Luckyjim says:

Why would they be fearful of losing their jobs? You can’t be dismissed for taking part in a legally organised strike.

          • GaryC says:

BA are in this for the long game, and long term profitability. For sure, you can’t dismiss someone for going on strike (subject to the strike being lawful), but I’m sure BA would find ways of making people redundant. Being forced to run a reduced schedule could make this self-fulfilling. In addition, for people who have been on furlough and are subject to lower pay, how long can they realistically strike for?

          • Rob says:

Mixed Fleet is 40% of the fleet and they won’t strike because they are not massively worse off. 40% is enough for now.

I doubt, overall, there is much sympathy for a strike given that it is clear to everyone that cuts need to be made and the stroy about new T&Cs etc is too complex to get across to the public (who may still think you should be grateful for a job at all).

          • Lady London says:

Once they’ve got rid of who they want to, I have a strong suspicion BA will try to look good by actually ending up improving MF contracts very slightly.

          • Lady London says:

… and just seen that Rob has an article about this that has now appeared today..!

      • Doug M says:

I don’t think BA staff have ever been very clever with industrial action, far too squeamish about sticking the boot in. Regardless of the labour pool you can’t just pull people of the street for cabin crew, there’s training required. If new people join the union then the saga continues.
I do genuinely have sympathy for BA employees, but they left the door open in 2010 when the legacy fleets agreed to keep their terms in exchange for allowing the new MF. Short term I’m alright Jack.

  • JohnT says:

Any info on how long BA refunds are taking? We cancelled in early May so just interested (less of an issue now Amex extended date for 241 qualification, as didn’t want a last minute panic to spend!!).

    • Anna says:

I’ve had money back within a couple of weeks recently, they look to have got their act together compared with March/April.

      • Stu N says:

For telephone cancellations, vouchers and Avios have come back in minutes (may need to log out/ log in). Cash element within 72 hours. Phone lines are much, much quieter than they were in March/ April.

        • JohnT says:

Looks like I need to phone and chase if they have a “lost backlog” hiding somewhere.

  • Craig says:

How long are Amex referral bonuses taking these days?

    • Michael says:

A few days for my last referral.

      • Craig says:

        Thanks, a week so far.

        • Funtime says:

          I’m in the same position.

Always used to get the referal bonus before the physical card arrived, not this time.

        • AndyGWP says:

Same here – did one a few weeks ago and referral points came through before the card had been received by the recipient

Referred someone else about 10 days ago (who immediately applied and was accepted) and no sign of referral points yet

(Both used incognito browser to avoid any issues with cookies / referrals / tracking etc)

          • Polly says:

Amex told me it will now be 10 weeks for points to hit. This is def new.

    • eligold says:

been 8 days and still waiting
