Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The new HFP chat thread – Wednesday 6th May

We have decided to run this new daily chat thread on Head for Points.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the defacto repository for random comments and questions.  It is unlikely that the news flow will be so big over the next few weeks that we will need many ‘Bits’ articles, however.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are stuck at home self-isolating, we want the HFP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as its keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HFP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/05/06/the-new-hfp-chat-thread-wednesday-6th-may/comment-page-1 The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

We will continue to monitor how this is working.  Let’s see how it goes.  Take care!

Did anyone notice that the Heathrow express saver prices have disappeared on the website (the 90 days in advance purchase) ? I was trying to get a ticket for November and was only gave the £22 price. Same for January…Was there any communication on it ?

    • ChrisBCN says:

I think the advance tickets only get loaded about 24 weeks in advance, which puts you about November. Just wait a couple weeks and they will appear for November. January you will need to get wait longer.

      • ChrisBCN says:

(Heathrow express is an oddity, most of the rest of the UK network is 12 weeks in advance)

Amex IDC Plat card. Thinking i might get it before i travel to US early next year and also use it to buy AA miles occasionally.
Can someone confirm if the lounge benefits, insurance and breakdown cover are the same as UK Plat?
If yes, does it make sense to keep this card and pay £444 a year as compared to £575 for the UK version? I’d miss the local retail offers and i have other cards to earn miles. Anything else I am missing?

    • RedEyeDonkey says:

Is the insurance the same? I vaguely remember a comment about that in the past. Worth a check anyway if that’s of any value to you.

    • Cam says:

I have the Amex IEC. My understanding is that the insurance has somewhat less restrictive terms around requiring travel to be paid on the card, and is thus superior. I recall there may also be a difference in maximum age. As noted one doesn’t get the various Amex special offers, but the other benefits are largely the same.

One annoyance is that Amex PTS seem to be capable of charging flights only in GBP, even for a card they issue is €. I don’t use it often, but occasionally it is useful where airline websites and OTAs don’t permit a particular combination (eg, mixed class or mixed fare class bookings).

  • Nick S says:

Just seen that my Clubcard vouchers that were due to expire this month, have been extended by 6 months to end of November

  • Anna says:

Has anyone ever tried chargeback/S 75 claim with Lloyds credit card? I need to claim back the money for 3 flights which Cayman Airways cancelled but are refusing to refund, contrary to US regulations. When I checked the confirmation email it transpires I paid with my Lloyds Amex before it was withdrawn! (I still have the MC).

    • Anna says:

Having said that, I’ve just found the relevant section on the Lloyds website and it says it only covers separate items over £100 each – the flights were $57 dollars each so presumably they would be counted as separate and therefore excluded from the scheme?

      • Gavin says:

The £100 refers to Section 75 claims. You should be able to obtain a refund via Chargeback.

    • James D says:

Hi Anna. I had to claim after Thomas Cook went under and I also had closed my account before they collapsed. It was an absolute nightmare and it took me over six months to get the money back. But with determination and an eventual complaint being made with Lloyds customer services, the refund was paid directly into my bank account (I do not even bank with Lloyds). There is an email address you can use but the automated reply informs you that you can not submit a new claim via email, this is to be done over the telephone. However, as the account is closed, they can not verify you over the telephone and the only option to get the claim in is to visit a branch armed with the card or account number as well as your ID. The branch staff verify you then hand you over to credit card services. I had to repeat this every time I needed to chase the progress of the claim. Good luck!

      • Anna says:

Thanks all – I still have the credit card account, Lloyds just removed the Amex version last year so I should be able to do this over the phone.

    • Charlieface says:

Depends if the flights are bookable at that price separately. So if it’s a return ticket (not two one ways joined together) you could still get it. Also if there is a fee on the whole booking, so it works out slightly cheaper to book it together.

  • Suzanne says:

How long does it usually take for the Amex Gold annual bonus (10,000 MR) to come in? My renewal date is April 9 and today I got charged the £140 annual fee, but I still haven’t got the 10,000 points yet? I was aiming to cancel the card as soon as I got the points…

  • @mkcol says:

Data point: requested transfer of VS miles to Hilton Honors on 23rd April.
Data protection from completed & acknowledged the same day.
    Points arrived today 6th May.

    • David D says:

I did my transfer on the 28th April and received the points today as well. An email from Hilton asking about my contact with them a few moments ago gave me the heads up they had posted. Fair to say I have not contacted Hilton today.

      • Andrew M says:

I received the same Email from Hilton, even though I also hadn’t contacted them. Points arrived today as well.

      • @mkcol says:

I was wondering why on earth I’d had that email from Hilton – just binned it.

Hi. I am trying to raise funds for my hometown in beautiful Botswana. With travel and tourism at a halt it’s tough out there. I would appreciate your support. Thank you (Rob please if deemed inappropriate).

Thanks a lot. Let’s hope things normalise soon.
(They don’t have furlough schemes so the struggle is huge).
