Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The new HFP chat thread – Wednesday 6th May

We have decided to run this new daily chat thread on Head for Points.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the defacto repository for random comments and questions.  It is unlikely that the news flow will be so big over the next few weeks that we will need many ‘Bits’ articles, however.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are stuck at home self-isolating, we want the HFP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as its keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HFP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/05/06/the-new-hfp-chat-thread-wednesday-6th-may/comment-page-1 The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

We will continue to monitor how this is working.  Let’s see how it goes.  Take care!

I use to utilise the weekly IHG limit of 300/200 cash equivalent via curve to pay some bills. Any recommendations on how to utilise that without enabling curve fronted?

    • Anna says:

Depends what the bills are, if they attract Curve charges there’s no way of getting round that with Curve. If you can, pay direct with the credit card, otherwise consider opening a Revolut account (but pay off credit card after topping up to avoid interest charges).

    • stevenhp1987 says:

Ernie is still fine. Also doesn’t have the £700pw limit.

  • GDT says:

I have a non-refundable Hilton reservation in Osaka for July which I am unlikely to be able to use because of travel restrictions. I made the booking in December. The hotel has not yet taken any payment and the card I used has expired. If I cancel or don’t show up will I be charged by Hilton?

    • Roberto says:

Most non-refundable bookings are now cancellable, have you looked at the Hilton CV help pages on line?

      • GDT says:

only cancellable to 30 June at the moment

        • Gavin says:

They’ll probably update the policy to make it cancellable for free in a few weeks. If you contact the hotel directly they might allow you to cancel for free straight away.

          • Secret Squirrel says:

Tried to call Virgin flying club yesterday, not operational until 5pm so used SMS & WA but neither routes got any reply and now more that 24 hours later.
Is the SMS / WA route now not operational at all, will try to call again today?

          • Rob says:

You’re looking at 2-3 days for a SMS reply.

          • GDT says:

            Thanks Gavin

Took your advice and the hotel were very gracious and have cancelled the reservation without charge

I continue to be delighted by Hilton.

  • Sarah says:

I had BA flight cancelled and managed to get through to get refund. I have received cash refund plus Avios that was originally paid but the 2-4-1 companion voucher isn’t showing in my account. Any ideas why this would be or do I have to attempt to call BA again?

    • Anna says:

It does sound as though something has gone wrong here, as the voucher usually comes back with the Avios (and should get a 6 month extension). Was it definitely your voucher, as opposed to another HHA member? I had no idea which of our vouchers had been generated by whom until I checked both our accounts after cancelling our trips!

      • Rob says:

We had this problem. In fact, we had a weirder version – we used 2x241s on the same booking and only one got returned! BA Refund Helper on Flyertalk got it fixed.

    • Secret Squirrel says:

Should be back immediately or at the same time as your AVIOS refund.
Ours came back in yesterday with the AVIOS and 241 extention.
I would contact them as that’s not right!

  • Roberto says:

My Virgin to Hilton point transfer arrived today. Others have suggested it could be a wednesday thing as previous points seem to appear on wednesdays only..

I texted VSFC on the 24th of April so quite happy with the turnaround.

  • Stanley says:

Data point – Amex refund back to bank account. Uploaded bank account form Friday 24th and requested refund. Credit refund showed on Amex on 29th April. Hit my bank account today. so 8/9 biz days all in.

    • Anna says:

I got an Amex refund today from a closed account, took 10 working days.

      • Doug M says:

Yep, likewise. It seems to me that closed account refunds take longer as they have to handle the proof of payment bank account, versus open accounts were the direct debit offers proof of payment bank account.

    • fivebobbill says:

After closing my Plat card in late March the refund credit took nearly a month!
A series of mishaps at their end caused the delay, and i was compensated with 5k Avios.

  • Oh! Matron! says:

Long shot, but has anyone any info on internal Aeroflot flights for July? Off (well, not off) to Kamchatka, but I’ve not heard anything from them

    • Alex M says:

July is too far away, you’ll need to wait. Afaik they offer only vouchers if they cancel the flight so I hope you paid with the uk credit card to claim s75…

      • Oh! Matron! says:

Okay, thanks 🙂 Thought as much, and yes, I did pay with SPG (RIP) Amex

  • Ian M says:

    Hey everyone.

Q.. Can you earn Hilton points when dining at a hotel restaurant but not a guest at the hotel? I know you can with Marriott, but as far as I’m aware you can’t with Hilton, but thought I’d check with the experts 🙂

    • Rob says:

Don’t think so. I mean …. at some brands (eg Hampton) you don’t earn on restaurant meals even when you are staying!

      • paulm says:

I think they changed this a few months ago so food/drink spend now gets points at Hamptons

        • Don says:

Correct. All brands now earn points for incidentals.

  • Mart says:

    Morning all
Looking for a way to get 2.5k as miles without buying?

    • Mart says:

      AA miles
      …fat fingers

      • AJA says:

Sign up to e-rewards and complete a lot of surveys? 2,000 e-rewards points converts to 500 AA miles. Alternatively just purchase them. They currently have a promotion giving a 40% bonus on miles purchased. I wish you could transfer between BAEC and AAdvantage but they are totally separate currencies.

      • Lyn says:

Does the AA shopping portal work in the UK? Do you have any Marriott or other points to transfer?

      • Wally1976 says:

Marriott Bonvoy points convert into AA miles I think?
