The new HFP chat thread – Wednesday 6th May

We have decided to run this new daily chat thread on Head for Points.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the defacto repository for random comments and questions.  It is unlikely that the news flow will be so big over the next few weeks that we will need many ‘Bits’ articles, however.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are stuck at home self-isolating, we want the HFP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as its keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HFP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/05/06/the-new-hfp-chat-thread-wednesday-6th-may/comment-page-1 The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

We will continue to monitor how this is working.  Let’s see how it goes.  Take care!

Lloyds upgrade voucher. Mine expires in June. I called up and currently only extending those expiring this month. Will try again towards the end of the month.

  • Martin F says:

Any IHG Spire Elite members had their recently announced 25k bonus points credited to their account? If so, how do I go about it?

    • Blindman says:

      Hi
Raise a “missing points” query through your IHG account.

Wait 7 days and then they manually downgrade you to PLAT, upgrade to Spire and the system gives you 25K.

      Perfect.

    • memesweeper says:

Yes — I logged in online and did it from within the account.

    • Lev441 says:

What was the recent announcement in relation to the points? Must have missed something but nothing showing on my account..

      • Rob says:

IHG is rolling over your status to 2022 and apparently Spire members will get another 25k bonus (as they would have if they’d earned Spire properly again). No sign on my account yet.

        • Brian W says:

Still nowt on my account either.

          • Blindman says:

I think patience is the key here.

If they cannot do the new lower status achievement 25K without a manual intervention then the 2022 status one will take some time IMHO.

    • Rhys says:

No surprise – doesn’t sound like the SA government is giving aid and with all flights grounded it’s difficult not to be in trouble!

      • Harry T says:

        Agreed!

I was going to use Avios to book them in January for my trip to SA. Any ideas what would happen if I booked flights with Comair using Avios, and Comair went bust? Would I get rerouted?

        • AJA says:

Which airline would you be rerouted onto? With SAA gone and Comair subsidiary kulula.com presumably also grounded and part of the bankruptcy protection what other airlines are there?

I hope Comair survives this. Their service was great and it is a good redemption opportunity as well as useful for earning TP and Avios.

I’ve been happily using Curve to front my IHG Premium card for years.

I upgraded to Metal last week and the combination of Curve + IHG has completely stopped working. No just for financial-type transactions, all transactions. Curve Metal with other cards is fine. I’ve (fruitlessly) raised a question with Creation support, but any suggestions from the regulars here what might be amiss? The fact this happened just as the upgrade to metal happened might be a co-incidence of course.

    • memesweeper says:

      no => not

      • Jonathan says:

Just the usual Creation paranoia? Assume the Curve card number has changed so Creation probably seeing transactions coming from a different & new route so generating a security block. I’d call Creation & ask them to whitelist new Curve card but in my experience you might find it blocked again quite quickly and need to call a few times.

        • Chrisasaurus says:

Curve is the merchant in this, the card number has no involvement whatsoever any more than PayPal or Tesco or BP has a ‘card number’

        • memesweeper says:

          ‘call Creation’

          sigh… yes, I figured I might have to… I’ll give that a go after lunch…

    • Paul Pogba says:

I paid another £5k of tax last night with Curve and IHG. The only thing I’ve noticed since upgrading to Metal is I get verification/approval requests now and they frequently fail to come through.

Has anyone successfully got their limits upgraded above £100k a year when a significant chunk is HMRC payments?

      • Simon says:

With Metal Ive got to 500k. But had to keep badgering them. Sent them links to their own website that says metal is ok for tax bills for point earners. They wont increase it over 500k till I get to 500, but they keep banging on about varied spend. Forget about it if there is any history of using curve to pay off brighton etc.

        • FloriGuy says:

On the other end of the scale – how are they for increasing at the bottom end of the scale? A fair chunk of Ernie payments and such like. My wife just got her card and is close to the 5k monthly limit. We are happy to put some normal spend through it but there is a limit to what you can come up with for spending money on during lockdown. Just wondering what will happen if she hits the monthly 5k/annual 10 k limit where most of it is Ernie?

I dont see any issue with her card being upgraded to metal if we get higher limits but it is not worth it if limits stick to 10k per annum.

          • Genghis says:

If you’re looking for an increase they do look for varied spend.

    • Chrisasaurus says:

Have you removed and readded the card? That may force it to authorise itself again, maybe that’s the issue?

    • Lev441 says:

Worked fine for me today – curve metal holder..

      • TGLoyalty says:

My white is working fine but my black doesn’t seem to be will have to find a way to unlock it and try again later

        • memesweeper says:

Calling up worked, and the wait wasn’t too long (by Creation standards) — so give it a try TGLoyalty

  • Alex M says:

Any advise on manufactured spending on non uk debit Visa would be greatly appreciated. Anything apart from gf and council tax payment…

    • Alex M says:

Gc ( aka gift card), not gf!

      • Harry T says:

It’s not manufactured spending if you spend money on your gf – it’s a sunk cost 😉

        • mark2 says:

I have got a couple of thousand ponds worth of gift cards which I bought from Morrison’s with at least 10% off plus8 Virgin Miles per £.
          I regard them as pre-payment.

    • TGLoyalty says:

Revolut or Monzo if it’s a non UK Debit Card.

      • FloriGuy says:

How do you pay in to Monzo using any sort of card?

        • stevenhp1987 says:

          monzo . me / username

          • FloriGuy says:

Thanks for the tip. What you using to pay Creation and Curve dont seem to work?

  • TonyG says:

Tried to transfer from amex mr points to virgin, but comes back with an error.
    Anyone else having difficulties?

    • Harry T says:

I have never been able to transfer Amex MR to Virgin Flying Club and no one seems to understand why!

    • Travel Strong says:

Same for me and everyone in my household – always have to ring, and the Amex rep is always surprised as if no one has ever had the problem before! (Still always very helpful though, of course).

      • TonyG says:

        Ty.
This was actually done through amex rep and confirmed yet got message that did not go through

  • Simon says:

Marriott points • would anyone be kind enough to confirm whether the following might work? Thank you in advance! 😉

    • My partner has 2 x (UK) Marriott accounts, each at the same address BUT with two different email addresses.

    • She also has 2 x (UK) Amex MR accounts, each one linked to same email addresses that she uses for her 2 x (UK) Marriott email addresses above.

    • She also has 1 x (US) Marriott account, one with a US address and linked to a third (US company) email address.

My question is: would my partner be able to transfer up to 100,000 Marriott from ALL THREE of her Marriott accounts (2 x UK and 1 x US) INTO **MY** (UK) Marriott account? Or would Marriott stop this happening?

I’m trying to collate a lot of Marriott points for a particular CAT-8 redemption for us for next year, you see, and this would go a long way towards helping that end.

    All the best

    • Anna says:

It sounds as though it would be easier if she combined her Marriott accounts into one, or does she want to keep them separate for a reason? But I can’t see why she wouldn’t be able to transfer her Bonvoy points to you, it’s quite easily done by phone.

      • Simon says:

        Thanks, Anna.

She keeps them separate simply as problems with Marriott IT in the past meant that MR point transfers to Marriott would fail if the respective MR and Marriott email addresses didn’t marry up. At the moment she has two MR accounts with different email addresses, which is useful for annual 90K MR allowance purposes.

    • Grant says:

Depends on the numebrs involved. There are annual limits on transfers out of invidiual accounts, and annual limits on receipts in to individual accounts (from transfers).

      • Grant says:

        * numbers

        • Simon says:

It would be less than the annual 500,000 limit for points received, Grant. Given that, would you suspect it might work… or actually not?

          • Grant says:

I’d give it a go as per MJ’s suggestion below. 3 calls one after the other, hopefully 3 different agents. What could possibly go wrong?!

    • MJ says:

You can only send 100k points every calendar year and can only recieve 500k points every calendar year.

I don’t know how it works with multiple accounts, and if possible I would try and collate them and stop using multiple. Perhaps just ask Marriott what you can do.

However, you could risk it and just call multiple times and do each account separately. You’ll likely speak to different agents so they may not realise, especially if you do it on the same day as the transfers tend to take a while in my experience

      • Simon says:

MJ / Grant — thanks for advice. I really appreciate it.

  • Jody says:

Someone mentioned something about Dragon Pass the other day (think it was Sundays chat). Rob said something about an email and lounge passes being automatically extended, but a few of us on there said we hadn’t received any info, and our passes were still showing as expiring in Jan 2021.

Rob, can you come back and clarify what is supposed to be happening with them, or does anyone else have any more info? I’ve got 3 left and husband has 8!

    • Rob says:

A reader sent me an email which explained how his membership and passes were being extended by, I think, a year. Given that his status was extended he may well have been a ‘proper’ Platinum rather than a RED Platinum though. I would drop DragonPass a note – you can refund the passes if needed so you’re not going to lose any money, althoughe extension is obviously preferable.
