The new HFP chat thread – Monday 4th May

We have decided to run this new daily chat thread on Head for Points.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the defacto repository for random comments and questions.  It is unlikely that the news flow will be so big over the next few weeks that we will need many ‘Bits’ articles, however.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are stuck at home self-isolating, we want the HFP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as its keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HFP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/05/04/the-new-hfp-chat-thread-monday-4th-may/comment-page-1 The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

We will continue to monitor how this is working.  Let’s see how it goes.  Take care!

I understand as direct transfer incurs this charge. Given that Curve pass through the MCC I suggest this would also be the case with using Curve with BC as the underlying card.

    • Rossy says:

Is this still the case if it’s done via Apple Pay? I read something on the Revolut forums recommending people to do this?

  • Murray says:

Has anyone had any luck getting a partial refund or similar for the Amex Platinum annual fee? It seems ridiculous that we still pay in full for it given that the vast majority of perks that cannot currently be used. Double points is meagre compensation otherwise.

    • JJ says:

I don’t think you can get a refund as such, but I asked to be down graded to Gold, received a Gold Charge Card (not credit) within two days and the pro-rata fee is sitting in my account as a credit.
Very efficient, and MR points intact.

    Good morning everyone
According to Virgin Atlantic booking, there are no available flights to Miami until May 25. I’m supposed to fly on May 24, my flight status still shows as On Time.
Does that mean VS cancelled the flights? If yes, would they wait until couple of days before the flight to notify me of cancellation?

    • Rhys says:

No, it means they have closed bookings for that flight. Current bookings are still ‘active’. However, this is usually a precursor to cancelling a flight completely. At the current rate Virgin and BA appear to be cancelling around 3 weeks in advance, so you should expect something soon.

      • Isherwood says:

Data point – on 25.4 BA cancelled my flight from Palma to LCY for 23.6.

      • MarioC says:

        Thanks Rhys.
Since Virgin advise I will be refunded up to 90 days, should I start a chargeback with Amex when I get the cancellation email? Or just wait for the refund (90 days it’s quite long for VS in current circumstances)?
My understanding is that the credit card companies hold the money until you fly. Why would the refund take so long?

        • Rhys says:

I’m not sure it’s actually taking 90 days – that figure may just be to cover themselves. Unless you need the money right now I would just let it play out – give Virgin the opportunity to refund you before pursuing them!

PS – credit card companies don’t typically hold the money until you fly. This is only done in exceptional circumstances where they are worried an airline might go bust (as happened with Norwegian).

  • Alex M says:

Workaround for paying more than your card balance on Amex Plat (using their generous offer of 1000 points for 9.09£ spend): in theory you can’t pay more than your balance but your balance does not update immediately therefore you can pay for your purchases from old statement periods re-using your current card balance, so to speak.
I did it today and expect my card balance go to negative when the transactions get processed (or maybe they will decline those transactions and put points back – we shall see).

  • Dave says:

Masks – where are you guys buying your disposable masks from

  • Nelson says:

Data point and question: I am getting 0.9 per MR point as a new amex plat cardmember. My way was Amex bus gold(+spending bonus)-amex plat bus (to max out refs.) – then cancel amex plat bus and applied for amex plat personal all MR points were kept in one pot. Now happy to 0 the balance against statement credit.

Despite I have received my amex gold business spending bonus about 2 months ago the spending counter is showing on my personal plat “receive 30k points if u spend 4k within 6 months”.
Will I receive the bonus if I spend it?

    • guesswho2000 says:

History suggests yes – sometimes you get lucky, and if the counter is there that’s generally a win.

      • TGLoyalty says:

I don’t think its always an indicator.

I’ve had it and got it and other time not – didn’t qualify in each scenario.

  • LewisB says:

I have £400 deposit paid to G Adventures for a 7-day Inca Trail hike. It’s not going to happen, although not officially cancelled yet and are refusing ALL customers refunds. Am I right in thinking once the tour has been cancelled I can go through Amex and request a chargeback? They are offering credit but I’m not interested.

    • John says:

      Yes

    • guesswho2000 says:

Correct, if it’s been officially cancelled and they’re refusing to refund.

    • Graeme says:

I went with United Mice last year, who were great. Bargain basement price (the lowest available anywhere) and me and my mate were the only two on the trek – it was brilliant. Anyway, a friend was meant to be trekking with them right now, but they refunded straight away once everything kicked off. Give them some thought.

  • Bruce says:

anyone heard of G-YMMB incident at heathrow?
