The new HFP chat thread – Monday 4th May

We have decided to run this new daily chat thread on Head for Points.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the defacto repository for random comments and questions.  It is unlikely that the news flow will be so big over the next few weeks that we will need many ‘Bits’ articles, however.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are stuck at home self-isolating, we want the HFP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as its keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HFP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/05/04/the-new-hfp-chat-thread-monday-4th-may/comment-page-1 The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

We will continue to monitor how this is working.  Let’s see how it goes.  Take care!

Anyone had any experience on receiving refund from Qatar after they cancelled the flight. It’s been 4 weeks for myself and have resorted to putting it in the hands of Amex Plat to resolve it…

    • ChrisD says:

I filled a request on March 10th and have heard very little since. I’ve raised an official complaint and still nothing. Did Amex refund you via section 75?

    • Genghis says:

I used Amex chargeback after having waited 28 days. The monies put on hold a few days later and then the claim close and settled in my favour about a week after that.

  • Mike says:

Happy Star Wars Day everybody – May The Force Be With You !

    • Anna says:

May the fourth! Misses the point otherwise 😂

    • Andrew says:

They all come together don’t they?

28th April – Ed Balls Day
1st May – May Day (The day I change the batteries in my smoke alarms)
4th May – Star Wars Day.

Good news as BA seem to be much quicker issuing refunds – I rang to cancel a flight, On Friday for September and the refund was back on my card this morning, However, I am still chasing up a refund for a cancelled flight from March 13 – a small amount but not letting BA keep it!

    • Anna says:

The refund requests at the start of the crisis in mid March did seem to disappear into a black hole! I only got mine back after contacting BA Refund Helper on FT; 2 calls to You First got me my Avios and 2 4 1 back but they just couldn’t retrieve the cash.

    • Stu N says:

Same here – cancelled flights on Friday afternoon, money back today. Call took less than 5 mins including a wee chat with the agent. BA seem to have got phone refunds working pretty smoothly now.

Still wish I was calling them to book stuff rather than cancel though.

  • Harold R says:

Amex Buisness Platinum – I called up CS asking for double points and cash value like personal card agent raised the question to superiors and expects it will. But it sounded very much like the more people requesting it the more likely it would happen. So if please call and request if you have the card.

  • Nick says:

On the Amex gold credit. How does the 2 airport lounge vouchers get sent? Post or email? And when should it arrive. Already has the card for 1 month

    • stevenhp1987 says:

You should receive a Lounge Club card.

The two free visits are loaded onto that.

      • Baji Nahid says:

wonder if they will extend the expiry date on the card for those who already have it due to the virus

  • Nick says:

My Amex statement got cancelled card says credit balance was refunded on 29 April. But still not in my bank account? How long should this be taking?

    • Anna says:

I requested a refund to a closed card be credited to my bank 2 weeks ago and there’s still no sign of it. This seems to be the one area Amex is being annoyingly slow with at the moment.

    • Doug M says:

The actual refund seems to take 3 to 5 days to appear in bank after date on Amex statement in recent experience. Amex have been poor in this respect. Had to ask multiple times, and smaller amount refunded quickly, larger amounts seem to take longer. As this is money you’ve typically already pestered airlines and hotels to refund it’s annoying to have to repeat the process with Amex.

    • Blue Mountains says:

Requested credit (from cancelled BA flights) to be transferred to bank account on 14th April. I was told 5-7 days. After 7 working days, credit not transferred and contacted them via chat. I was then told it would take 10 working days. After 10 working days, still no sign of credit, so contacted them again via chat. I was told they have a huge backlog and due to COVID19 it is taking them longer. Was given some points for inconvenience. Credit finally appeared in my bank account on 30th April. So 12 working days with a fair bit of chasing…

      • Andrew says:

BA refunds to my Amex have posted next business day.

        • Matty says:

Andrew, I think the above is in relating to refunds issued to cancelled cards.

I requested a refund on 1 April. I’d cancelled the card in March. I can see from my Membership Rewards balance that the points were adjusted 3 days later. I still haven’t received a cash refund. Another flight was cancelled last week and I’ve only just asked Amex for a refund. Again, this is to a cancelled card. I’ll call Amex in a few days and chase both amounts.

        • Blue Mountains says:

I think @Nick was talking about credit(s) already sitting in an Amex account and the delay from Amex’s side to transfer said credit to bank account. That’s what I understood…

  • Roberto says:

Completely Off Topic , I applied for the Bounce Back loan this morning. It took 3 or 4 minutes and was so simple it beggars belief. I like many was excluded from the Sybil (fawlty) scheme but acceptable the new lower tier offering. Email from Lloyds to say its accecpted within 10 mins. Dont think I will actually need the spare cash but nice to have none the less.

Its gonna have sooooo much fraud.

    • Kip says:

Did you have to state how your business had been negatively affected by covid? Provide examples perhaps?

      • Rob says:

No reasons are needed or asked for. Tell them you’ve got a small business (sole traders OK) and you get up to £50k in your bank account within 24 hours 🙂 Capped at 25% of whatever you claim your 2019 sales were.

  • Andrew says:

Ref the question about Qatar and refunds, I had a flight booked for May and wished to cancel the flight but rebook for later in the year. I followed the ‘rules’ set out on the Qatar website; this basically meant emailing them and waiting for a reply. I had read on the HFP website that Qatar were taking 30 days so I was happy to wait. However, after waiting more than 30 days my patience run out and I decided to call them. Living in the UK, I rang their London office – no reply no matter what time of the day I called. I then rang them in Doha; they answered the phone and I explained the situation to them. They rebooked my flight and sent me the confirmation within a few minutes.
So my advice would be to ring Qatar in Doha, whilst I found the lack of response (or should I say no response) via email, I was pleased that the representative in Doha sorted it out for me in minutes.
    Good luck!
