The new HFP chat thread – Wednesday 29th April

We have decided to run this new daily chat thread on Head for Points.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the defacto repository for random comments and questions.  It is unlikely that the news flow will be so big over the next few weeks that we will need many ‘Bits’ articles, however.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are stuck at home self-isolating, we want the HFP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as its keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HFP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/04/29/the-new-hfp-chat-thread-wednesday-29th-april/comment-page-1 The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

We will continue to monitor how this is working.  Let’s see how it goes.  Take care!

  • r* says:

Im trying to make a payment with curve where I need to approve the transation in app, but I’m not getting any notifications. Previous comments said to do it with the app open, but I’m still not getting any notifications – is there an alternate way to approve the transaction or a way to force the notification to appear?

    • Qwertyknowsbest says:

Obvious question, but check Curve notifications are allowed by your phone.

Personally never had a problem with this.

      • Chris K says:

I have the same problem as r* . I have the app on iPad. I go to settings-Notifications and I can’t even see the Curve app listed there in order to turn notifications on?

    • Peter K says:

Try doing the transaction again. A faff but has sometimes worked for me.

    • Paul says:

I had the same issue and was told by their support that it would only receive the notification if the app is not open. I had to go into apps and do a ‘force stop’ on the app. Then it seemed to work. Hope this helps.

    • mr_jetlag says:

App may need to be updated in your appstore.

  • Peter K says:

Completely off topic but has anyone else come across bizarre substitutions on supermarket home deliveries?

Kitten cat food substituted instead of the senior (geriatric) catfood ordered for example (why not just swap for normal rather than kitten?!)!

Another was three different flavours of Patak curry sauces ordered. Only one was delivered as ordered, another was a Patak korma (not a flavour ordered/wanted) and the third was Sharwood, but again a korma.
If you need to go for a different brand, why not go for a curry flavour I ordered, rather than another korma I didn’t? Weird.

PS in case anyone wonders, I’m not taking slots from those who need it more. Genuine reason why used it.

    • No lockdown for yours truly says:

I wouldn’t worry, I’ve got 10 grocery deliveries lined up every 2-4 days over the next 3 weeks, which is as far ahead as they go.

If somebody drops down dead of hunger because of my selfish orders – which I doubt – more fool them for not stockpiling a bit of food.

      • unknown says:

So you steal people’s plants and you’re so selfish you can’t even try having only 1 delivery per week or fortnight.

        • Shoestring says:

Gotta look after Number 1 and the rest of the family! 🙂

I was re-homing those plants, by the way lol – new lease of life.

          • Kev 85 says:

Are you replying to your own posts now?

            Are you ok son?

          • Shoestring says:

            Very jolly, old pal 🙂

          • unknown says:

Try being less selfish and ordering less often but more food.

Maybe social services should rehome your son. Clearly he’s a better person than you, not being able to lie and all. Can only hope he won’t learn from your shoddy example.

          • Shoestring says:

But I can’t do fewer orders, more food as they won’t let you – limited order done on some formula that must be combination of weight & n items.

For £3 delivery charge I don’t give a monkey’s as it costs more than that to get to the supermarket & back

And yes, thanks – my son is a credit to me, I taught him to be honest, owning up even when he does something ‘naughty’ (which isn’t naughty really but just autistic, if you get that.).

          • Kev 85 says:

            “ For £3 delivery charge”

Do they charge you in pounds even though you’re abroad?

          • Shoestring says:

            It’s a bit less than £3 currently! 🙂

          • Shoestring says:

I seem to have acquired a mother in law when I married my wife – if you can suggest an alternative to parts 1 & 2 of these clauses, I’m sure a lot of guys would like to know the answer.

      • Capt Hammond says:

Ah, HFP’s very own version of Donald Trump makes his daily appearance! Tho, in reality, the bullshit Harry talks is probably less credible than Donald’s daily briefing

        • Shoestring says:

But your ‘bullshit’ is my serious shit that benefits other people.

    • Kev 85 says:

“ Kitten cat food substituted instead of the senior (geriatric) catfood ordered for example”

      Will the cat even notice?

      • Shoestring says:

They *do* notice, it’s kind of mushy.

        • Kev 85 says:

It’s only a cat to be fair. Just give it whatever is available

        • Genghis says:

Shoestring is back! No longer prancing around the garden in your swimmers? 🙂 how are you guys keeping? How’s the MIL?

          • Shoestring says:

Hey there Genghis hope you are all well, the MIL soldiers on but no more visits allowed and we know she would have preferred to die in her sleep a few months ago (she said it) but the human body can amaze us with its resilience and looks like she’s there for a few more days, I hope she’s comfortable day & night, sweet old lady I like a lot.

          • Genghis says:

Good to hear she’s soldiering on. I had some bad news about my Nan and can’t go and see her. Fingers crossed she lasts until lockdown is over. Other than that, we’re all good. It’s great seeing my son all the time and not working away

          • Shoestring says:

Sorry re: news about your Nan.

Oddly enough, my MIL’s care home (more like a big hospital ward for geriatrics) is rife with coronavirus – but she hasn’t actually got it. Or if she did get it, she’s shrugged it off, not bad for 86.

          • Harry T says:

            @Genghis
Sorry to hear about your Nan.

            @Shoestring
            Welcome back!

    • Super Secret Stuff says:

I once got a pinaple instead of wetabix, now that was odd.

      • TGLoyalty says:

Now that made me laugh. Pineapple is a Good breakfast choice too

    • mvcvz says:

Anyone who orders Patak sauces deserves to get cat food. Don’t worry, it will taste better.

      • Lady London says:

I am so tempted to day something about the cat and the sauce.

    • Lumma says:

Best one I’ve ever heard was a pregnancy test substituted for condoms

    • John says:

I got strawberry wafers instead of digestives

    • meta says:

I am mostly getting my choices right, but on last Ocado order the expiry dates on most items were either the same day or the next day even on non-perishable items. It seems they just dumped all the expiring products. If I went to the shop this would be on a reduced shelf normally. I complained, they gave me £50 off next order which seemed fair.

  • JImbob says:

Just a data point – upgrading to Curve Metal has reset all my monthly and annual limits, once I activated the new card on the app

    • EJH says:

Very interesting to hear – that does change the analysis somewhat.

    • Secret Squirrel says:

      Legacy black?

    • TGLoyalty says:

It’s also completely reset mine Happy Days lol

    • Liam says:

When I had the free card there was some fraudulent activity on it and so of course they cancelled it and sent me a new one. That also had the effect of resetting my limits. I imagine simply reporting the card as lost would have the same result.

      • Lumma says:

Be careful asking curve to replace the metal card, the reason I decided to cancel last year was because they wanted to charge me £50 for a replacement when the contactless chip stopped working.

They eventually agreed that it should be a free replacement as it was faulty, but that was the end for me

      • TGLoyalty says:

Doesn’t always work as I’ve had replacements before and it didn’t reset.

    • Steve says:

Legacy black with £500k limit and still working with Earnie. It would Have to be a pretty serious proposition to tempt me to Mess with this setup

  • No lockdown for yours truly says:

My wife got sent a new Priority Pass, it says in conjunction with her Amex Plat card.

We don’t hold any Plat cards.

    Bank error in your favour.

  • Neil Donoghue says:

O/T – Does any one highly recommend the HSBC WE cards? The annual fee seems a bit steep @ £255 but the earning great is fantastic at one point per £1. Alternatively do I just opt for the free version and take 0.5 per £1. I have read Rob’s reviews but still undecided. Nearly everywhere I go takes Amex these days – Think it will have to be the free card.

    • Pete C says:

The two years of spend bonuses makes it a pretty good option to use whilst the Amex churn window resets

    • JImbob says:

I’ve switched to Hsbc during my 2 years away from Amex.
Didn’t bother with a supp, just gave my wife my Curve card paired to the Hsbc.
Generally there’s a 25% bonus on transfers every year which helps.

      • Genghis says:

Been two in the past 12 months IIRC

        • Andrew M says:

I’m hoping there might be a more generous offer on HSBC transfers to Avios in the near future. I’m sure BA would appreciate the cash right now. There was a 50% bonus on transfers previously and I seem to remember that there was a 100% bonus in the early days of the WE card. That would be worth having.

      • Neil Donoghue says:

And this is exactly why I asked the question! There is always someone here 2 steps ahead here – I love it! Thanks guys

        • Polly says:

We are sticking with the hsbc premier atm, whilst not travelling. Ok it’s only half avios/£ but that’s ok. Esp using curve linked. No fees. Once we finish with plat early June, then will upgrade to WE, as soon as travel allowed. As you say good earning rate, and the odd bonus is worthwhile.
Did you ever get to Bora Bora?

          • Neil Donoghue says:

That sounds like a great plan Polly! Looking at our cards today, nearly 3/4 of all our spend is on an Amex so I just can’t justify the £195 annual fee. I also have my own business which means I am fortune enough to still be able to churn the business cards every six months. We made it to Bora Bora and it was absolutely fabulous. It still didn’t beat the Conrad Maldives which we are now planning on returning to next year (Wide open availability). Hope you are keeping well.

    • Rum says:

I went for Premier in January. Account set up and credit card approved same day BUT they wouldn’t give me the one with the annual fee straight. Had to wait three months and got it in late March, just in time to put my council tax on it and hence get the initial welcome bonus. Great timing!
As for whether it’s worth it, I would say with a BAPP earning 1.5 points per £1 (and rounded up), it’s not the best option. Also bear in mind the supplementary cardholder earns half the points so no point in getting a supplementary on it especially if you need to pay for it. I have it purely as an alternative to Amex, double points abroad and for the bonus points.

      • Rahaney says:

I had exactly the same. Signed up for the WE on the premier account application. Was sent the agreement for the standard/free card and it’s taken the last 2 months to finally get it sorted!

  • ChrisWKR says:

My wife jumped on my PC under ‘guesty’ the guest account – I see she has been looking up kittens for sale or getting given away free.

Not that I’m checking up on her.

    No bloody way.

    • Shoestring says:

Though as kittens are sweet, a kitten or 2 for the summer before we go back to Plague Island could be quite fun, chuck them out to fend for themselves end August would be my thinking.

      • The Original Nick says:

Ah Up Harry, you’re back I see. How’s the garden looking in Espagne?

        • Shoestring says:

The garden is looking amazing! The big problem here is no rain (didn’t rain really in the last 6 weeks) but I got the soakers going, I genuinely think that the water bill could hit £2K this summer but it will be money well spent particularly as 1. I’m self isolating = saving my life, can’t take that money with me if I die & 2. no holiday costs etc, this is my holiday money – water!

          • Genghis says:

🙂 I was really pleased when Thames Water said it’s not possible for us to have a water meter put in. I’m sure I calculated £6 an hour for one sprinkler 😬

      • Lady London says:

Would you seriously do that to a cat Harry.

        • Shoestring says:

What? Give it/ them 3 months of fun & food then leave it/ them to starve to death in the winter, alone & unloved? Not ideally, obvs – but it could be the only 3 good months that/ those kittens get.

I personally wouldn’t do it but my wife’s view of the value of a cat’s life is a lot lower than yours or mine.

If I got a chicken for 3 months, fattened it up then killed it for the pot, would you be so critical?

  • The Original Nick says:

Eurostar bookings. As from comments early on this morning and replies to my problem it seems that there’s no trains to and from St Pancras – Lille for the next 2-3 weeks that I’ve found. Now, my booking is for St Pancras – Lille 16th May returning 17th May. When I log on to my account it dosen’t show any sign of being cancelled. I can click and get tickets but I haven’t clicked. I can also still choose seats. I’m going to wait until I get a cancellation email and then force a full refund. They’re being very cagey it seems. Everything seems to be being directed towards a evoucher

    • Lady London says:

Be prepared to charge back or section 75 it. Eurostar is basically run by the French and athough there is law covering rail travel to the contrary, I am pretty sure I saw somewhere they are only giving vouchers (which the French govt permitted for much of the travel sector).

  • Sundar says:

@TGLoyalty – Tried paying Vodafone bill via 56677 using amex. What does Amex match upon as the payment I tried didn’t go through and went to customer care agent ?

    • TGLoyalty says:

I’ve used 191 the said pay bill before very strange as deffo worked a few months back (I haven’t had a sign up bonus etc to hit for a while)

Are they different services? Was the agent able to take amex?

      • Sundar says:

No, agents arent taking payments due to covid situation. Asked to try mobile app, which doesnt take Amex as payment.
Just trying to find how to get it to work with amex for now.
