The new HFP chat thread – Wednesday 29th April

We have decided to run this new daily chat thread on Head for Points.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the defacto repository for random comments and questions.  It is unlikely that the news flow will be so big over the next few weeks that we will need many ‘Bits’ articles, however.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are stuck at home self-isolating, we want the HFP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as its keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HFP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/04/29/the-new-hfp-chat-thread-wednesday-29th-april/comment-page-1 The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

We will continue to monitor how this is working.  Let’s see how it goes.  Take care!

Has anyone tried the Economist avios offer recently?

I’ve tried signing up on multiple devices, browsers, UK or Canada, and yet when address details etc are added, the payment box just isn’t there (hence you cannot enter card details…).

I emailed them and their only advice was to phone them.

    • Andrew says:

This sounds like an identical issue to what I experienced a couple of years ago with this offer – I guess the bug comes and goes. When I phoned up the person I spoke to wasn’t filling me with much confidence that he knew how to process the offer manually, so I didn’t bother in the end.

Getting away from the almost endless bad news, I watched an episode of the Royale family yesterday evening. I was struck by the stunning resemblance between the comic actor John Henshaw and the ex MP and Lib Dem leader Jo Swinson? Has anyone else noticed this?

I’ve always been an admirer of Henshaw’s work, and I voted for Ms Swinson in the last election.

What’s the limit for foreign currency spend on the legacy Curve black card?

I was looking at their T&Cs last night and could see that you can spend up to £500 per month on the blue card before incurring a 2% surcharge. The current black card was £15k per month (from memory) and metal was £60k.

I wasn’t aware that there were foreign currency spend limits before a 2% charge is levied. I couldn’t find any details regarding the old legacy cards.

    • Youllnever says:

£15k per year, not month. The 2% charge is only levied for anything over the £15k limit. The legacy black card uses the same fee structure as the current black card.

Tried to do a test NS&I using Curve Fronted, assuming I would swallow 1.5%.

    It didn’t go through.

It seems Curve are blocking my payments to NS&I irrespective of whether I opt in to being charged for it.

    Has anyone else experienced this?

    • geezer says:

Try a couple of 100 if that don’t work its probably been blocked. As Rob says everyone reads this blog – NS&I as been openly discussed for a while as a MS option so no surprise its gone.

    • Funtime says:

Put £3750 through PB without any fees early this afternoon together with £7500 yesterday. Making hay.

  • rams1981 says:

What are people’s thoughts on retaining HSBC WE? £195 fee quite punchy with limited spend and no ongoing bonus. My renewal fee just went through. I have cancelled and re-applied before and qualified for bonus again after 6 month gap.

    • Kingred says:

Paid 2k this morning to NSI with no charges (curve blue and IHG)

      • Crafty says:

Does your Curve app have reference to Fronted?

      • Jonathan says:

How do you get 2k through IHG? Mine seems to have the £200/day, £700/week limit for NS&I.

    • BJ says:

Banks withdrawing all sorts of stuff at the moment. For that reason alone it might be worth holding if you value it. A lot of oropke out there wish they hadn’t cancelled their old Hilton, IHG+ cards etc.

    • memesweeper says:

I’m retiring mine this year. Might sign up again if there’s a decent bonus, but the ongoing rate isn’t attractive enough to justify the high annual fee for me.

  • Nelson says:

Question asked a few Days by Joe. I have a similar issue:
“I have MR points in my Amex business platinum account which I can’t redeem at 0.9p. Is there a way to change to personal platinum account perhaps I can open a new platinum personal account and combine?
If I do this does anyone know if the 0.9p offer is for new accounts also?”
    Somebody tried it?

    • Joe Green says:

Thanks Nelson for bringing this back up hopefully someone can shed light on this

  • Gary says:

I’ve just logged on to my BAPP Amex account and the time to get the sign up bonus has been extended by 3 months, this wasn’t the case a few days ago! It was due to run out at the end of May and is now end of August. This is good news for many of us I expect!

    • Tim says:

I was just about to comment the same thing… my sign up bonus extended until mid-September! Amazing.

  • Andrew says:

Anyone got their IHG Spire choice benefit yet? Mine still just shows the Hertz option only.
