The new HFP chat thread – Wednesday 29th April

We have decided to run this new daily chat thread on Head for Points.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the defacto repository for random comments and questions.  It is unlikely that the news flow will be so big over the next few weeks that we will need many ‘Bits’ articles, however.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are stuck at home self-isolating, we want the HFP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as its keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HFP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/04/29/the-new-hfp-chat-thread-wednesday-29th-april/comment-page-1 The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

We will continue to monitor how this is working.  Let’s see how it goes.  Take care!

BA letter to BALPA about pilot redundancies. Horrendous.

    • Colin MacKinnon says:

      Jeeez! Statutory redundancy payments only!!

Ps What are the LCY crews flying? Are these just the BabyBus? Or are they City Flyer? If just BabyBus then it is doomed for sure.

      • Shoestring says:

They can hardly give away shareholders’ money in these times. Rich companies do that in good times (generous redundancy terms).

        Very tough for all concerned.

        • Harry T says:

          Is it the real Harry?!

          • Shoestring says:

Hard not to feel sorry for those facing redundancy. 6 months ago a long-standing pilot getting made redundant could probably have negotiated a package close to 2 years’ salary.

What is it going to be now? Notice period +
            You’ll get:
half a week’s pay for each full year you were under 22
one week’s pay for each full year you were 22 or older, but under 41
one and half week’s pay for each full year you were 41 or older
Length of service is capped at 20 years.

If you were made redundant on or after 6 April 2020, your weekly pay is capped at £538 and the maximum statutory redundancy pay you can get is £16,140. If you were made redundant before 6 April 2020, these amounts will be lower.

    • Lady London says:

      Statutory only.
Refusing to honour the previously agreed “rdeployment” agreement.
Withdrawal of ‘transition’ support to peoplemade redundant.

BA also makes iclear they will push out all employee pay and conditions to the lowest common denominator. This is BA’s opportunity to squash employees and provide no decent conditions and they are openly stating they are going to make use of it.

The letter is 3 pages about BA. BA this, BA thatit’s all about BA.

I sure as hell wish the pilots hadnt folded last December. Doesn’t matter what you give BA they will screw you as soon it suits them.

Per head it wouldn’t cost BA that much to be decent at an individual level even if it could be 12,000. They do still have access to cash.

Personally I think the union needs to go over this weasel worded letter and find its flaws. The 45 looks wrong from the start.

That will teach any union dealing with BA for the future. Don’t give BA anything as they will sh*ft you in the end.

OK BA, if you think you should tear up all previous agreements and dump people like this
and use this as an opportunity to achieve taking away working conditions and pay across the board, then you should go down. Let’s release the Heathrow slots to the highest bidder after you’ve folded which can’t be soon enough.

I dont care if this letter was just an opening gambit to force low expectations of redundancy confitions.. I didn’t want you to get government support but actually it’s far worse now I just want you to go down. Let’s replace you with the highest bidder. After all, it’s just business, isn’t it?

      • Rts says:

        Quite emotional! All ok?

      • Baji Nahid says:

Couldnt Agree More Lady London, its never about the poor employees who made their employer reach the position that they are at today. Makes me sick.

        • Shoestring says:

OTOH they got paid, contractually, for the work they did. If the work dries up, they’re no longer needed. They were paid fairly for work they did, now they’re no longer needed.

Contract ended. Work dried up. No work, no pay.

      • Don says:

It’s a privilege, not a right, to work for Britain’s most prestigious flag carrier and the letter reminds crew of that.

  • Ian says:

I’m still waiting for the email regarding our next easyjet flight that is booked for 7th May.
Not worried though – we have had 4 easyjet bookings cancelled over the last month. The notification emails have appeared anything between 5 and 9 days before departure.

  • Lady London says:

    1. Lufthansa is refusing to deal with refunds. It’s illegal but they are doing it. Technically they seem to be insolvent but they wil be rescued. Deutschland uber alles.

All you need to do is try once to get through to Lufthansa to ask for your refund for the flight they cancelled. When you can’t get through or if they refuse call the credit card you paid on and request a “section 75 refund”. Do it sooner than later. Lots here about this is articles and comments.

    2. easyJet has cancelled all flights through 17th May. They are not hiring extra staff to process the cancellations so people are being emailed 2-1 weeks ahead mostly. You have to follow s rabbit hole on the easyJet site to get a refund and then they say it’ll take 28 days. You can either wait or again call your cardco when you get the cancellation notice and ask for a section 75 refund – as technically under ec261/2004 they’re meant to refund within 7 days.
