Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The new HFP chat thread – Tuesday 28th April

We have decided to run this new daily chat thread on Head for Points.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the defacto repository for random comments and questions.  It is unlikely that the news flow will be so big over the next few weeks that we will need many ‘Bits’ articles, however.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are stuck at home self-isolating, we want the HFP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as its keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HFP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/04/28/the-new-hfp-chat-thread-tuesday-28th-april/comment-page-1 The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

We will continue to monitor how this is working.  Let’s see how it goes.  Take care!

Has anyone else recieved a email from Fcsverify@fly.virgin.com? They are asking for more information including email address, address and contact numbers. There are a couple of language errors in the email, but otherwise looks quite convincing. They have quoted my FC number.

The background is that I recently contacted Virgin FC to move points to IHG via WhatsApp. (also by text, but WhatsApp beat them by a few hours). The response took 3 days, but when they did message back, they were great, and the points left the FC account immediately, so I can only assume it’s all been done.

    Thanks

I am due to fly Gatwick to Mauritius late November with BA. I know no-one can predict if I am going to be able to get this flight or not. I do wonder if BA may move their long haul slots to Heathrow instead? I was wondering what others thought?

  • Waddle says:

BREAK: British Airways owner IAG has said the airline is set to make up to 12,000 workers redundant

  • Doommonger says:

BA to cut 12000 Jobs in light of Covid19

  • Waddle says:

So I applied to upgrade my Green to Platinum to bag the 20k bonus and 2MR per £ at the moment. (Weird time, I know, but I have a large purchase and have been taking Addison Lee rides anyway so think I can make it work for three months). Anyway I didn’t get an instant decision so I waited over the weekend (applied on Friday) and phoned the new accounts team yesterday who told me it was in the “last stages” and to call again today. So I did and was told to wait further because of reduced workeforce. Are there any readers with or had pending applications during the COVID-19 period – if so how long did it take before you got a decision?

    • Rum says:

I’d be interested to hear how you get on, Waddle

    • Crafty says:

We had our Green to Plat take longer than expected. certainly over a week. Received the Plat 2 weeks ago.

  • Nick_C says:

Presumably BA won’t be making staff redundant right now while furlough is available.

Although I acknowledge that BA needs to slim down dramatically to survive and adapt to the new normal.

    • J says:

Mixed Fleet crew have poor contracts, high staff turnover anyway many will have been with BA for less than 2 years. They don’t get paid a lot though.

    • Roguemale says:

      Nick,
IAG first quarter statement just out…not pretty.
Re-structuring and redundancies….one of whom may be the hedging guy by the look of the numbers!
      Ouch
      RM.

    • Colin MacKinnon says:

And there’s the crux of the Virgin Atlantic problem – do you save Virgin jobs, or save BA jobs?

Since they compete on the same routes, and there won’t be enough business for both for the foreseeable future….

Form a taxpayer point of view, maybe lose the jobs where you would have to put the most cash in?

(of course, the counter argument is that BA will – as soon as Virgin goes – ask for cash anyway.)

  • Joe says:

Re Virgin Flying Club – can anyone remind me (or point me in direction of an article) about how to exchange Virgin Miles for vouchers? And can these vouchers be used for virgin wine club does anyone know?
    Thank you!

    • Rob says:

You need to call or use the SMS or WhatsApp service. Virgin Wines is a partner, yes.

      • Paul74 says:

The text service seems to be working well, so far. I texted the number on the Virgin website on Sunday and got the request (to move most of my miles, 100k, to Hilton) actioned on 48 hours.
I say so far, given myself a reminder to check at the end of time advised.
I tended to value my Virgin miles at a notional 0.75p as they didn’t offer the same redemption opportunities as avios, so I don’t feel to sorry about my decision to cut losses and move them to HH. Cheers, keep well everyone.

      • Joe says:

        thank you!

  • Baji Nahid says:

Im waiting to see if they will up the bonuses for referrals for the Free BA card but also see if they increase bonus points for adding supplementary card holders.

    • Secret Squirrel says:

I dought that, atleast on the free card!
Anyone called up to see if any offers are forthcoming from amex on closing BAPP?

      • Harry T says:

No one offered me anything when I cancelled mine (wouldn’t have cared anyway – was 8000 Avios in the red or something).

        • Secret Squirrel says:

Smart move. I cancelled the free BA card as will be 4k under. Opened up a new BAPP soon after using referral.😉

          • Harry T says:

            @SS
            Smart idea!

It was @BJ’s idea to cancel my card so I can’t take the credit.
