Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The new HFP chat thread – Tuesday 28th April

We have decided to run this new daily chat thread on Head for Points.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the defacto repository for random comments and questions.  It is unlikely that the news flow will be so big over the next few weeks that we will need many ‘Bits’ articles, however.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are stuck at home self-isolating, we want the HFP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as its keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HFP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/04/28/the-new-hfp-chat-thread-tuesday-28th-april/comment-page-1 The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

We will continue to monitor how this is working.  Let’s see how it goes.  Take care!

Just wondering regarding Curve limits, the highest I have heard anybody have is 300k, has anybody been given more?

If so, could you list what your daily and monthly limits are aswell as annually? 🙂

    • Grant says:

AFAIK there are also £500k and £1m annual limits.

      • Don says:

I asked about increasing my annual limit and I was told to ask when I am nearer to using this one. Surely with Metal, if you’re on £95,000 and many months left of membership they won’t turn around and say sorry no dice. Especially if it’s a commercial card and those lovely interchange fees they capture!

        • Secret Squirrel says:

Are you blue curve Don at present?
Neil yesterday got a credit reset & he was near the credit limit if I can recall but he was legacy black upgrading to metal.

          • Don says:

Yes only Blue. I’m considering Metal given I’ve got the BC Hilton.

I do have a use for car hire cover, but the relatively puny max value is off putting as I generally score well with rental upgrades.

Reading the metal T&C it seems they changed the insurance from gadget to mobile only? I wouldn’t mind insuring an iPad Pro I’m planning to buy.

      • MJ says:

Haven’t heard of anybody with a £1m limit, that’s a lot of points hahaha

But curve do say the maximum they offer is £1. 4m annual so perhaps there is somebody lurking around with that limit.

      • The Urbanite says:

Curve won’t upgrade from the 500k limit until that has been maxed out.

    • JP_MCO says:

I have the following on my Curve Metal:
      Daily: £7000
      30 day: £50,000
      365 day: £500,000

      • Secret Squirrel says:

I would be happy with 200k a year, getting close to 100k already! 😲

        • Harry T says:

@SS how much of that is genuine spend and how much is splashing out on our good friends the seagulls and ERNIE?

        • MJ says:

JP_MCO – Thanks very much for that. It’s strange that the daily limits don’t increase as sharply as the annuals. What if somebody need sto make a large payment for a holiday etc that can’t be split.

SS – You say that now but once you reach 200k spend you’ll want more 😉

    • Michael says:

I’m sure I remember reading Rob say a friend of his has the maximum 1.4 million limit on his Curve.

  • mark2 says:

Yesterday I asked whether anyone else was interested in a Curve Metal card in plastic without the sub-standard insurance etc. but with the facility to make financial payments at a lower cost e.g. £75 per year. Several others expressed interest.
I put the question to Curve and they came straight back and said no but they would pass on the suggestion to the relevant people.
May I suggest that anyone else who would be interested also asks the question to show that it might be worthwhile. Maybe on the forum too.

    • Don says:

You could argue that given the card penalty fee is £50 if cancelled within 6 months £50 is a clear amount to reduce the annual fee by and not plucked from the air.

    • Secret Squirrel says:

I would certainly take up the offer but I can’t see them reducing it that much!

    • Spk says:

The insurance is a scam with all its exclusions. Lounge access is chargeable. I actually think they are becoming a sustainable business. Are they losing a lot on payments to Ernie or seagulls? I suspect not.

    • Harry T says:

If the insurance wasn’t utter garbage, I’d be more likely to actually pay £150. But they don’t cover pre-existing medical conditions, and only cover phones up to £800 ish (any flagship smart phone costs way over £1000).

  • Lee says:

Just noticed this on BA’s website, which is excellent, assuming they are still in business (which I’m personally confident they will be)

“ Argentina has banned all internal and international commercial flights until 1 September because of the deadly coronavirus outbreak.
The authorities said airlines should not be allowed to sell tickets for flights that may not go ahead in the next four months.”

  • AndyGWP says:

Re: Audi Finance – does anyone use the website to make manual (credit card) payments?

I’ve not made a manual payment for a while, and they’ve revamped the website in the meantime, so I can no longer seem to find the “pay by card” option (I’m within 10 days of my payment date, so I’m sure it would normally appear by now).

Has the option been removed (or hidden away within the depths of the website)?

    • Jonathan says:

Personally never got it to work on the website but manual payments over the phone works fine.

  • Sk123 says:

Has anyone upgraded their BA Amex to BAPP via chat? I’m having issues with doing it online. I can call them but I find chat a lot quicker. If not, does anyone know what the wait time is these days when calling? Do you get any bonus for upgrading? I’m not eligible for the sign up bonuses.

  • Brad M says:

I saw in comments yesterday talking about Curve backed by IHG for Ernie you can check the reference once processed on the Creation website to see if treated as Cash like transaction. Any explanation how to do this as I only see long reference numbers.

    • DJ says:

I would like to know that as well.. as when I expanded the transaction, it doesn’t show the MCC at all.

      • Don says:

DVLA and NS&I seem to have a different MCC?

While I didn’t need to use Curve for DVLA, that shows Tax Payments on BC and NS&I is Government Services.

  • Anna says:

Query – I bagged my inbound seats from GCM early this morning. When I go onto choose my seats to look at the cabin lagyout, the J cabin starts at row 5 and appears to be 4 across. Usually it’s 3 cabin and the standard 8 across. Could this be the fabled Club Suite?!

    • Stu N says:

Yes – that is Club Suite 777 layout. I wouldn’t get too excited – loads of substitutions could happen between now and when you fly.

      • Anna says:

Is that what they call “equipment changes”? I appreciate that, but there’s really not much else to be excited about at the moment 😂

    • Harry T says:

@Anna did you ring or book online?

      • Anna says:

Booked online. The surcharges for one way aren’t hugely inflated on that route and I’ve had my fill of trying to get through to BA recently! Fortunately with all the refunds I had more than enough Avios for 3 J seats and I’ll call BA to get 1 x 75k back when it’s (hopefully) a bit quieter.

        • Anna says:

It was a bit nerve wracking as I always have to wait an extra 24 hours for the MAN connection to be released the following day!
