The new HFP chat thread – Saturday 25th April

We have decided to run this new daily chat thread on Head for Points.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the defacto repository for random comments and questions.  It is unlikely that the news flow will be so big over the next few weeks that we will need many ‘Bits’ articles, however.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are stuck at home self-isolating, we want the HFP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as its keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HFP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/04/25/the-new-hfp-chat-thread-saturday-25th-april/comment-page-1 The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

We will continue to monitor how this is working.  Let’s see how it goes.  Take care!

How easy is it to upgrade and down grade the curve card on a monthly basis?

    • Genghis says:

      Officially:
“If you Downgrade your Curve Metal Account within the first six months of the start of your Curve Metal Subscription (including during the Cooling-Off period), you will be charged the Curve Metal Card Fee of £50 as part of the Curve Metal Services provided.”
      https://www.curve.com/en-gb/terms
      In reality, no idea.

      • Secret Squirrel says:

If anything comes out of the latest Curve updates, its got me looking at metal in more detail when that fateful day comes!
The monthly fee can be paid for if your crafty with your purchases!

      • Secret Squirrel says:

Ouch – £50. Thats eqivalent to 4x months paid up front.

        • Joseph Heenan says:

Yep, so really it only makes sense if you take the card for 6 months. Need to run the figures and see what is the break even point for spend…

          • TGLoyalty says:

You can also get the year for £150 right now which is 2 months free, don’t know how long this will last.

I really do like my black card though the red or blue just doesn’t do it for me. Insignificant issues I know.

          • Alan says:

The break even point will be an interesting calculation.

  • Craig says:

    Morning all

We have an outbound flight booked for 4 passengers in Club World using 2 x Amex vouchers.

We’re struggling to find any suitable return flights, the best appears to be a flight with 2 Club World seats and 2 economy. Would we be able to book 2 CW and 2 Economy seats on the same booking?

    Also,

    • Anna says:

Will the system let you select these seats? Otherwise you could call BA to complete the booking and ask if they can split the cabins. Normally all passengers have to travel in the same class on a single leg but I don’t know if this still applies if you’re using 2 vouchers.

    • AJA says:

Craig I think that’s doable. Just use one voucher to book CW in both directions and the other voucher to book CW one way and WT the other. Draw straws as to who travels in economy.

      • Anna says:

It looks from Craig’s post as though they’ve already booked the outbound leg, so options will be add the inbound online and call for return of Avios, or call and ask BA to add it.

Normally and if there is a lot of award a availability it’s sometimes easier just to cancel the outbound and start again with a whole booking when the inbound becomes available but at the moment you are stuck with BA’s voucher shenanigans if you try and cancel online.

  • AG says:

Data point on a BA refund for a cancelled May flight:
Called on Tuesday, got through in ~45 min on US number without selecting any options, was told refund was processed and would appear on the card I’d booked with in 7-28 business days…
Yesterday I was surprised to see that I’d already received the credit on my (US issued) Amex card.

  • Jon says:

    Just musing:

I am surprised BA don’t do something like offer the tier points (and possibly Avios) for cancelled flights (so legally required to give a refund if requested) if you take a voucher. It would probably make quite a few people take the voucher. Obviously would have to be for flights booked before a certain date to stop people gaming the system.

    • TGLoyalty says:

They’d much rather keep your money and give you nothing though.

Right now that seems to be working for them …

      • Jon says:

I’d argue it isn’t ‘working’ for them.

They are generating a lot of badwill, many credit card chargebacks, and customers will think twice before using them again.

Wheras this suggestion would create goodwill, future credit, and probably future loyalty through people wanting to use their status

  • Secret Squirrel says:

    Amex Gold 10k anniversary bonus:
I’m on 4 x weeks since Y2 start but still no 10k MR been credited.
How much longer do we wait recently?

    • John says:

Mine came shortly after the first statement of year 2

    • Rob says:

My wife got hers in just under a month, credited about 4 days ago. Cut off was 29th March I think.

  • AJA says:

Is it just me but I didn’t get the usual emails from HfP in my inbox today?. Not really a huge problem as i log on here anyway.Just flagging in case there’s an issue Rob and the team not aware of.

    • Geoff says:

Have you got some sort of sorting rule in your mail program – mine didn’t get filtered into the usual mailbox because today’s emails came from .com rather than the usual .co.uk

      • AJA says:

Ah. Rookie mistake, didn’t check junk mail folder, they are there! Thanks Geoff!

        • Rob says:

Yes, we’ve moved to .com for everything as of yesterday. 10 hours work in total for our IT guy which is why we’ve put it off for years! Ironically this should improve Mailchimp deliverability because they get an extra ‘authentication’ tag attached to them now which wasn’t there before.

  • Anna says:

Curve not playing with the seagulls at all for the past couple of days, even after updating. So Viva La Revolucion for me for the moment (and pay it off sharpish).

    • FL says:

You mean even after agreeing to Fronted?

What is Seagulls? Is is the financial product beginning with M?

      • Anna says:

I’ve not had any messages about being fronted, all my payments just keep saying they haven’t been able to be made at this time.

      • Ali says:

        pls offer some decryption…?

        • Ali says:

          google reveals amex…
I though curve doesn’t work with amex or does it for some ?

        • Steve says:

Refering to paying off an amex balance with curve linked to a MC or Visa, not linking curve to amex

    • Harry T says:

@Anna does your interest from Revolut appear immediately or at statement generation?

Also, does Revolut work for paying the seagulls? Seem to remember it doesn’t.

  • Roberto says:

    @Nick.
Following up on yesterdays message regarding transferring VS to Hilton. I texted & whatsapped my request on thursday in pretty much the same format as you and was contacted late last night (friday) to say that the transfer had begun. I had a whatsapp this morning (saturday) confirming that the text team had already started the process so there must be two teams.

Anyways logged into flying club and the miles have gone – fingers crossed its underway.

    • roberto says:

and had the verification email from support this afternoon , saturday.
