The new HFP chat thread – Saturday 25th April

We have decided to run this new daily chat thread on Head for Points.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the defacto repository for random comments and questions.  It is unlikely that the news flow will be so big over the next few weeks that we will need many ‘Bits’ articles, however.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are stuck at home self-isolating, we want the HFP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as its keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HFP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/04/25/the-new-hfp-chat-thread-saturday-25th-april/comment-page-1 The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

We will continue to monitor how this is working.  Let’s see how it goes.  Take care!

Hi HFPs… I just wondered if anyone has any experience of using Curve card gadget insurance?
I broke my phone last week and I have only just realised that I have gadget insurance with my Curve metal card.
Are they easy to deal with etc?
    Thank you

    • Chrisasaurus says:

Never looked at it in depth but the axa document makes it clear as though it’s a part of the travel ins – and the claim section lists travel documents as required for a claim…

      Very unclear

      • rebecca says:

Thank you I will report back with how they do I will be making a claim on Monday for a damaged phone so will update with the progress.

    • kevbar says:

When I had a broken phone they said phones are only covered if lost or stolen 🙁

    • TGLoyalty says:

Such a shame you lost your phone … must’ve fallen out your jacket pocket on your walk yesterday.

    • Youllnever says:

Had my phone stolen. Pretty easy to claim. Just needed to submit the cost of the phone, police report, and voila! £800 back into my bank account (with the £50 excess fee deducted).

  • Garreth says:

Please may I get some help?
I had booked Virgin from LHR to São Paulo on points in Upper for the 27th December.

Obviously, Virgin have decided to close this route before it even opened. In fairness to Virgin, they got in touch quickly and they offered a transfer to LATAM from LHR. However, less than 24 hours later they contacted me to advise that “LATAM will not be operating this route from the 20th – 27th December inclusive”. I have a couple of questions:

    1) is there a way to verify if LATAM have cancelled this route? They are still selling tickets and their twitter representatives are not aware of any cancellations.

    2) Virgin’s only other alternative was to reroute me via Paris. They refused to put me on the only other direct alternative (BA). Can they do this?

    Appreciate your help.

    • Rhys says:

No, you can insist they put you on a direct flight. They want to route you via Paris because it is presumably cheaper for them due to the AF-KLM tie up they have but since direct vs indirect is a substantial difference you should put your foot down,.

    • Lady London says:

@Garreth if LATAM is still selling tickets on the date or another acceptable date to you then you should tell you want their original offer LATAM. LATAM J gets really good reviews. Though it may depend on route. I’d pick them over BA anytime.

However LATAM has just moved into Star Alliance which defo means VS would have to pay more at the interline rate to replace your ticket.

I’d push for LATAM as you can insist on direct and under EC261 they can’t refuse to ticket you on another even unrelated airline if that airline is the closest match to you travelling under the same conditions – which pretty much means same class and direct.

I would fight them for LATAM and request them to provide your new ticket number and PNR refs. on LATAM asap. Really push for this is case VS folds. It will help a lot with insurance and cardcos to have the ticket already issued if that happens.

I would consider AF only if they upgraded you to AF First via Paris with a long gap between flights into and out of Paris so I could enjoy the very refined superlative AF First lounge in Paris. I think if you fight them long enough for Latam and refuse Paris for long enough due to not wanting indirect, I will bet First on AF might even cost them less than J on LATAM.

Please let us know how you get on.

Breaking UK law and flouting guidance in the process.

      • No lockdown for moi-meme says:

It’s not breaking UK law, they all have dual nationality and can travel freely back to home country.

Slightly dodgy argument with officious guy manning check-in – I guess the airline could get fined if passengers refused entry & sent back – but my wife argued & won the point then getting into this country wasn’t so difficult, though there were temperature checks etc.

If you missed it, my wife’s mother has been given hours/ hopefully a couple of days to live and my wife would like to see her one last time then attend her funeral, I won’t be going nor will the kids (hope my wife understands).

Is that a good enough reason to travel?

  • Andy says:

I let my points expire with IHG only 40 quids worth any one had any luck having them reinstated?

  • John says:

Curve – just received my investor card for my £10.50. There are no numbers on the card but the app asks me to activate my new card by typing in the card number???

    • Axel says:

The good news is your 365 day spend has been reset for £10.50.

      • Secret Squirrel says:

Can anyone point me in the direction of a reference guide to all frequent flyer programmes & what individual programmes points can be used on in regards to other airlines.
        Tx

        • Tony says:

Wheretocredit.com gives one side of that.

        • mark2 says:

This site http://www.webflyer.com/programs/mileage_converter/ shows where you can move points between schemes.

          • Secret Squirrel says:

Cheers all, was looking where I can use points to redeem on other airlines.
            e.g TAP – Emirates!

          • Lady London says:

TAP can be redeemed on using other Star Alliance airlines points at the rate and under the rules prevailing in whichever other Star Alliance airline.

A few airlines are harder to get a cprehendive picture of because they’re not in one of the main alliances, or they are but have their own extra interesting tieups.

Alaskan, Virgin, Etihad, Air New Zealand seem to do a bit of this.

QF codes can be found on Emirates flights on limited routes. Etihad and Emirates can be variously booked by the main US programs.

However be very very careful as some benefits like lounges go by the rules of the operating airline regardless of who ticketed you ,(I think this is the case with Star Alliance) and some benefits go by marketing/flight code airline (One World tends to o work this is way I believe). This can mean you might not get miles credited when it looks like you should.

There is good info on flyertalk for each airline o this. If it’s a well organised airline section this would normally be in a sticky near the top.

Does upgrading from Blue to Metal reset the 365 day spend limits?

    • Jonathan says:

I had same problem . Delete the app and then reinstall it . Works fine now

  • AndyW says:

Curve update – ‘Back in December, we introduced a 1.5% fee for paying (UK) tax bills with an underlying credit card. We’re now extending that fee to include credit card bills paid for with an underlying credit card.’

Never been down this road myself, but sure this will be disappointing to a few here

    • Roberto says:

Not just paying Brighton but premium bonds and topping up Isa’s too.. plus plus.

Another loophole closed for the non-metal holders.

      • Secret Squirrel says:

Not entirely true, bonds etc still no fees.

        • AndyW says:

I see no mention of anything other than credit cards

        • jc says:

MCC 6012 (banks / finance) + HMRC have been enabled so far. The rest of 9399 (government, incl NS&I / bonds) hasn’t, yet, but will be.

          • Crafty says:

You say that, but what does your own evidence tell you? For me, premium bonds were still working as of yesterday evening, but no longer by 11pm.

          • AJDT says:

Worked for me at 10am today

          • stevenhp1987 says:

NS&I worked fine this morning. No charge.

Travel things to do in Lockdown..

I bought a new monitor as my back was killing me using the Laptop on the kitchen table. Inside the box was a UK lead, but also Euro lead.

So having bought a uncorded Masterplug double extension socket, I’ve now made up a Euro to UK Extension socket with a one metre cable.

This matches my existing US to UK extension socket that I’d previously made up.

US one is probably more useful as their hotel room sockets traditionally seem to be in really awkward places and are so loose that the weight of a standard US to UK adapter with a charger half hang out the socket.

    • AJA says:

Andrew, I get around this by having one master travel plug into which I plug in a standard 4 socket UK extension lead which I always have in my travel bag. This gives me 4 UK plug sockets to plug various chargers for electric toothbrush, mobile phone, laptop charger etc. It also solves the problem where the hotel room only has the (one) socket hidden behind a table or bedside cabinet.

      • TGLoyalty says:

Same solution here if I’m going away for longer than a few days.

      • Lady London says:

Yup. When I pull mine out in the lounge I am everybody’s best friend. Managed by to find a pink one so I won’t forget it.

Yes those US sockets that are so loose are really annoying in the US. Slightly less likely in new build hotels though.

  • Lyndsey says:

Has anyone else not had Amex Avios transferred to BA from their BA premium card this month? Mine normally gets transferred on 4th of the month but didn’t for April. My spend was low so it’s not as many as usual, but that doesn’t have an impact on whether the points get transferred does it?
