Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The new HFP chat thread – Monday 20th April

We have decided to run this new daily chat thread on Head for Points.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the defacto repository for random comments and questions.  It is unlikely that the news flow will be so big over the next few weeks that we will need many ‘Bits’ articles, however.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are stuck at home self-isolating, we want the HFP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as its keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HFP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/04/20/the-new-hfp-chat-thread-monday-20th-april/comment-page-1 The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

We will continue to monitor how this is working:

we could potentially split it into a daily travel and non-travel chat thread

we may install some basic forum software

we may start suggesting potential topics for daily discussion

Let’s see how it goes.  Take care!

I’ve been waiting about 3 weeks for my refund, they put the avios straight back, it was an Amex payment for about £1100, can someone advise if I would be better off just doing a chargeback. Flight was 13th april, and cancelled a couple of weeks before by them. I’d really like my cash back now!

    • Anna says:

Hi Lashious, I remember you were going to Miami that week like me?! I was waiting a ridiculous amount of time for the cash as well. In the end I approached BA Refund Helper on Flyertalk. You need to register with the Flyertalk website/forum, someone might be able to help with posting the direct link, it’s on here somewhere! If that doesn’t appeal, Amex are being very helpful with S75 disputes.

      • Anna says:

If you look at Patricja’s post at 10:57 on this thread the link is posted underneath. I had also started a S75 dispute which was moving quite quickly so I think either way would get you your money.

Re. BA refund timeline for me: flight cancelled (10 Mar), refund requested (11 Mar), Avios for part-payment refunded (31 Mar), complaint form filled out (7 Apr), refund to credit card (17 Apr). Not great but it’s obviously a busy time. I’m fortunate enough to be not desperate for the cash though. I feel like getting refunds from other airlines/travel companies may not be so (relatively) straightforward.

  • N says:

After a multiple-week wait for a cash refund from Ryanair, they’ve just sent a voucher.

Their website states “You can request a cash refund however bear in mind we will place your request in the cash refund queue until the COVID-19 emergency has passed” which is so open-ended that it might as well not say anything.

Give them one week then small claims? Or chargeback?

  • Spaghetti Town says:

Vanguard top up via Curve and Virgin worked successfully. Thanks for the tip whoever it was.

Lets hope the virgin miles have some use

  • Anna says:

I cancelled a car hire booking which was classed as a BA holiday and agreed to a credit voucher for the full cash amount of £759. Last week I booked 3 award seats for next Easter and asked for the credit to be applied to the booking. Today I’ve had an email from BA saying the credit will appear in 5 – 7 working days which is refreshingly responsive of them at the moment!
Interestingly, the Ts & Cs of the credit were that it had to be used within 12 months of my original outbound flight, so I’ve managed to get round this by booking a one way flight as our return date is going to fall outside the 12 month limit.

  • Symon says:

I canceled my Amex Plat today as I won’t be travelling for God knows how long; and wasn’t offered any retention offer. Wonder if that’s because so many people are cancelling, or I’m not the sort of customer Amex want to keep. :-/

    • Harry T says:

They don’t seem to be offering statement credits or large incentives here. America is a different story.

      • Andrew M says:

German Platinum card holders are being offered 41500 MR points if they call up and ask.

  • Bruce says:

Looks like another wave of BA cancellation is underway. Just received an email saying late May LHR-BKK is cancelled.

  • Baji Nahid says:

    Hi guys,

Just wanting some more advice, I really appreciate the help with everyone on here. I bought tickets with an OTA which were ticketed by Virgin Atlantic but the travel is on KLM. I know that if they fail I will have to claim on section75 as I booked with CC. Do you possibly think that KLM could honour this ticket? I am sure other airlines in the past have done this when their partners fail. Depend is KLM do the same thing. I called their agent and she told me it could be a possibility but we dont know for sure. Lets see.

Also, quick question regarding AMEX, i referred my mother for a gold card, as i have a gold card, could I be her supplementary ? Is this even possible or allowed?

    I appreciate all the help!
