Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The new HFP chat thread – Monday 20th April

We have decided to run this new daily chat thread on Head for Points.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the defacto repository for random comments and questions.  It is unlikely that the news flow will be so big over the next few weeks that we will need many ‘Bits’ articles, however.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are stuck at home self-isolating, we want the HFP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as its keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HFP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/04/20/the-new-hfp-chat-thread-monday-20th-april/comment-page-1 The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

We will continue to monitor how this is working:

we could potentially split it into a daily travel and non-travel chat thread

we may install some basic forum software

we may start suggesting potential topics for daily discussion

Let’s see how it goes.  Take care!

What happens to my Avios and 241 BA voucher if I cancel the return leg, having flown the outbound leg of a flight?

    • Anna says:

I don’t think it’s possible for you to cancel it once you’ve flown the outbound in the usual Ts & Cs. If BA cancels it you have the right to refund/reroute.

  • DhuJam0 says:

    Hi all

I’m beginning to lose it a bit. Have been trying to contact BA for 3 days straight and I keep getting hung up on saying they can’t take my call. I’ve tried the ‘don’t press any option’ ‘trick’ but it doesn’t work.

I have a BA Holiday balance payment due in 5 days (haven’t been able to push it to 3 weeks prior to travel because I can’t contact them!) and a flight that has been cancelled which they want me to rebook but obviously I want a refund.

Does anyone have any phone number or ideas as to how I can get on the phone with someone? It’s just surreal that they won’t even take my call – I wouldn’t mind being on a queue and leave it running in the background.

    Thanks

    D

I was having the same issue. I called the US call centre: 001 877 767 7970 and it seems they don’t have the auto cut off feature. I had to wait 20 mins for someone to pick up. They were able to deal with my refund chasers

      • Lyn says:

This number worked a week or two ago but only choosing the avios option. The other option(s) resulted in being cut-off.

    • Ant says:

try 020 3250 0145 , i got through in less than 5min and they were v helpful. good luck

    • raz0r19 says:

      @DhuJam0
In exactly the same situation. Balance due on 25th April.
Had not called to extend the due date.
Received email in last 1hr to say that flight on 30th May was cancelled.
      Called +44 (0)203 250 0145 as I am outside the UK.
Option 2 followed by option 2 again for BA Holidays.
Wait time of <5mins & through to very helpful agent that has pushed through refund – no mention of voucher 🙂
All in all a very pleasant & hassle free experience.
      Hope the above helps

    • DhuJam0 says:

Thanks everyone for your prompt responses.

I had been trying +44 (0)203 250 0145 for a while now, and as if by some freak occurrence I just tried again and it literally took less than 5 mins to get a refund issued for one flight, and the BA Holiday pushed back with a ‘note on my account’ rather than a confirmation e-mail.

Can’t quite explain how it managed to work right now, but a very happy camper I am indeed.

  • Lady London says:

Just call you your card s.75 as has been much covered in comments on here as even in a headliner article from Rob in the past couple of days

    • Bobri says:

Thank you! Some of the short-haul European tickets were one-way and below 100 quid and some were bought using eur amex, hence was asking about chargebacks as more relevant datapoints

  • ChrisA says:

Apologies if this has already been discussed, but I have just received an email from BA about the cancellation of ‘my’ flight in May (CPT – LHR). I’m not actually booked for a flight in May, and the booking reference is actually relevant to an equivalent reward flight that would have taken place last Friday – for which I have already received all avios & ‘taxes’ back.
Has anyone else had a similar experience? I would imagine it is some sort of IT glitch.

  • Ghosty says:

It really seems pot luck when you will get your refund.
I phoned Saturday afternoon on the 0800 727800 number for a refund on my May 7th Seattle cash booking. Did not press any other numbers and got through in 12 mins, all sorted by 14 mins in total.
I was told I would get and email confirmation, but have not received yet. During my home working lunch break earlier , out of curiosity I checked my Amex account as my statement date is the 24th and low and behold I got refunded yesterday (Sunday), so just one day for me.
So it appears to be ‘the luck of the draw/call’

    • Doug M says:

      My experience
BA Got refund agreed, once App once JS workaround, Avios + money return needed chasing
AA Got refund easily and money arrived after around 5 days
Amtrak Hard to contact, refund agreed and paid 2 days later
Hotels com All refunds online 6th April, no money returned as yet.
Alaska now cancelled so will start that process later, needs a call.

    • Ghosty says:

Got my Alaska to sort out as well
Booked on Delta via Virgin miles on Virgin website, requested refund of miles via text also on Saturday. Still awaiting reply.
That trip would of completed my 50 States!
Being courteous I also cancelled my £1 Europcar one-way rental

  • berneslai says:

Re: Trying to make a booking with Avios. I was given the 0800 727 800 number yesterday but keep getting an automated message about trying back later (I don’t appear to ever get put into a queue) which then cuts me off. Has anyone successfully got through?

  • xcalx says:

Comoros; Kiribati; Lesotho; Marshall Islands; Micronesia; Nauru; North Korea; Palau; Samoa; Sao Tome and Principe; Solomon Islands; South Sudan; Tajikistan; Tonga; Turkmenistan; Tuvalu; Vanuatu, Yemen

Are the 18 countries claiming no covid 19 cases
    How many have you visited.

    Me 1. Vanuatu.

    • AJA says:

I’ve visited Lesotho (a very long time ago).

      • meta says:

        2. Lesotho & Sao Tomé.

For Sao Tomé the data is not accurate. There are four confirmed cases.

  • Matty says:

Another one of my flights has been cancelled. If I accept the voucher from BA, will I get like-for-like when I redeem or will the ‘value’ of the voucher be applied against the new booking meaning that I have to make up any cash difference from my own pocket?

    • Rob says:

      The latter.

    • Karl says:

I’ve had Avianca flights cancelled for an itinary to, around and from Central America in May. Paid £1100 in a sale for two people on the basis that the they had a nice outboound time from Heathrow and were £350 less than the next cheapest deal. No rearranged dates offered by the airline, just a voucher. Out of curiousity I checked and couldn’t find the equivalent trip with Avianca for less than £1800 between January and March. Hasten to say I won’t be taking them up on the voucher and will be requesting S75.
