The new HFP chat thread – Thursday 16th April

We have decided to run this new daily chat thread on Head for Points.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the defacto repository for random comments and questions.  It is unlikely that the news flow will be so big over the next few weeks that we will need many ‘Bits’ articles, however.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are stuck at home self-isolating, we want the HFP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as its keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HFP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/04/16/the-new-hfp-chat-thread-thursday-16th-april/comment-page-1 The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

We will continue to monitor how this is working:

we could potentially split it into a daily travel and non-travel chat thread

we may install some basic forum software

we may start suggesting potential topics for daily discussion

Let’s see how it goes.  Take care!

Yay! First comment!!!! Do I win a Waitrose slot for some point prior to August 12th?!

    • ChrisC says:

      No afraid not.

You win a free subscription to HFP and a signed photo of your choice of one of the HFP team.

      • Rob says:

        🙂

I just got a package from my Mum who has been doing some lockdown tidying up and found the very formal ‘boardroom’ photo of me that the bank did for the company brochure back in 2000-ish. Very dashing I look too 🙂

Still the same waist size as well!

  • Richard says:

Am I correct in assuming that if something was bought using Curve and will be refunded then the refund comes back onto whatever underlying card you have selected when the refund comes in?

And is anyone else struggling to remember what (now cancelled) cards they used to buy things now being refunded??

    • Genghis says:

      1) Yes

      • Genghis says:

Sorry – completely misread that! It goes back to the original underlying card used to make the purchase in the first place.

      • Hugo says:

It happens when they cannot link the transaction to an original one – such as when Malaysia refunded me twice

    • TGLoyalty says:

Curve let’s you choose which one of your curve cards the refund goes to now.

      • Genghis says:

Really? How? I got a refund about 3 weeks ago and the refund went straight to the underlying card used to make the purchase (I had a different card selected at all times after initiating the refund). Is it using the Go Back In Time feature on the refund? I’m too late to test as refund over 14 days.

        • Doug M says:

Yes I had $70 refunded from Amtrak yesterday and there was a Curve message in the app to choose the card it would be refunded to.

      • Secret Squirrel says:

Yes, that happened to me a few weeks back!

      • Mac D says:

        Only sometimes it allows this

        • Mac D says:

Probably if it doesn’t match the original amount ie a partial refund

          • TGLoyalty says:

Or if the original card is not longer in your curve account. Which it wouldn’t be as the OP said his has been cancelled.

          • Secret Squirrel says:

No, mine was exact amount refunded?

  • Crafty says:

What’s the best way to get Creation’s attention? A message through their website a week ago has not even been acknowledged. This is over a missing £250 that was billed to my card, but not credited to my Revolut balance.

    • TGLoyalty says:

Phone them Monday to Friday between 9-5

    • mark2 says:

That sounds like Revolut problem to me.

    • Michael G says:

disputes@creation.co.uk I was on hold last week for an hour to discuss a similar issue. The money eventually dropped off IHG. The CSA gave me that email address in case it didn’t.

    • the_real_a says:

Just ensure its settled and no longer pending. As someone else said, its possible to pre-auth the payment for it to fail at a later stage (3D auth etc) so it will drop off within a week. If it sticks then Revolut would be my first port of call, because a charge-back then subsequent fraud investigation by revolut might be messy.

      • Crafty says:

Thanks. Already spoke to Revolut, who gave me a screenshot to show to Creation that proves they sent the funds back. Just seems so hard to get hold of Creation… will try that email, thank you.

    BA refund update

Have received two refunds so far for “holidays” and BA refund helper from FlyerTalk has stated one “flight only” booking will be refunded within 24 hours (can only help with flight only). So only one outstanding holiday which is over three weeks so am going to contact BA direct.

Am waiting for June flights to be cancelled now for refund.

July to Florida I can’t see happening.

August to Seattle I can’t see happening.

    • Dave Barron says:

Good luck. When I called BA yesterday they weren’t accepting any calls at all. Automated line simply said to allow 14 days for a refund. So I contacted BA refund helper yesterday and await their reply.

      • Peter Taysum says:

I heard back same day from BA refund helper and from what I’ve read the promise of refund will be forthcoming. It makes sense HfP and FlyerTalk are major users of BA; and we “fill up” their excess capacity of First/CW. Corps will get money back. As a group we’re most likely to get back to flying Premium services quickly.

I’ve not phoned for a while; I’ve phoned BA Gold who answered within a few rings after I’d gone through the “tedious pointless” ‘welcome to BA, we’re trying to sound like the sexy M&S Food ads that they dropped, as they were really sexist and aged badly; and later Alex Cruz will be wearing HiVis jackets. Please press 1 to be put on hold for hours and ultimately cut off. To be put on hold for hours and ultimately cut off its 2. Press 3 if you don’t want to be put on hold for hours and ultimately cut off, and we’ll endeavour to not do so; but we will. For all other things please stay on the line, and we’ll keep you on hold for hours and ultimately cut you off. We still haven’t changed the other information and will try to sell you holidays in Florida; even though they have more cases of Covid than you can shake a stick at.”

Hilton points posted yesterday and switch from Virgin was originally requested on 29 March.

    • Sk123 says:

How long does it take for the agent to respond? I sent a request 4 days ago and I got an automated acknowledgement.

    • Leo says:

Confirmation transferred on 31 March but not made it across to Hilton yet….

    • Nick_C says:

Request made by text message 29/3, actioned 30/3, also hit my Hilton account yesterday.

OH is a couple of days behind me, and miles not yet arrived.

Let’s hope Virgin will pay for the points!

  • stevenhp1987 says:

480k IHG points arrived today from VS.

Agent responded to my request 7th April, got DPA email 14th April.

  • TokyoFan says:

@TGLoyalty – so I now have my new statement and haven’t been charged any interest. So the c.£1100 refund from BA *was* counted as payment towards my outstanding balance as Amex CS stated.

    • TGLoyalty says:

That’s good to hear previous policy made no sense to me personally at the time.

Just to confirm It was all automatic without any CS intervention? Was the refund higher than your balance due amount or lower?

      • TokyoFan says:

No intervention, just an explanation by CS. Refund took £1100 or so off a £2600 statement. Spend in next period was already over £1100 as well. So I paid off £1500 or so in cash, BA paid off £1100 (and took off me a mini mountain of avios) and I haven’t been charged interest on anything.

  • Carl says:

I’ve realised I forgot to cancel a Gatwick Parking booking for 8th April until 14th. Do I have any chance of getting this back given that my EasyJet flights were cancelled, would I be able to claim it through insurance? Was Gatwick parking (specifically valet parking) even open between those dates?
