The new HFP chat thread – Tuesday 14th April

We have decided to run this new daily chat thread on Head for Points.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the defacto repository for random comments and questions.  It is unlikely that the news flow will be so big over the next few weeks that we will need many ‘Bits’ articles, however.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are stuck at home self-isolating, we want the HFP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as its keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HFP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/04/14/the-new-hfp-chat-thread-tuesday-14th-april/comment-page-1 The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

We will continue to monitor how this is working:

we could potentially split it into a daily travel and non-travel chat thread

we may install some basic forum software

we may start suggesting potential topics for daily discussion

Let’s see how it goes.  Take care!

Hi all. Is there somewhere I can check Malaysians planned schedule BEFORE the seats get released? I do not want to wait and pounce on a reward seat unless I can be sure it will actually fly on that day….?

  • EJH says:

Any ideas how to make a new 241 open jaw booking – which is the best number (UK or overseas) to call? Spent a sum of 80 minutes on hold to be simply hung-up on twice. Obviously it’s not nearly as urgent as most others’ Covid refunds and the like (and I get that) but BA don’t seem to want to take my money!

Can anyone help me locating my VS companion voucher on the Flying Club website? Which section of the website is it in?

Feel like I can’t see the wood for the trees although their website seems to freeze on me no matter what browser I’m using when I click on the pull down section from my name in the top right hand corner.

    • Rob says:

It’s not. There should be a weird one-line entry on your miles statement, with a zero miles entry, which is the sign that it is on your account and waiting for use.

Thanks Rob, got it, “Virgin Atlantic Reward+ Credit Card – Reward Qualification”. Assumed it would be parked with an expiry date like BA ones. Got an email earlier from Virgin that they have been extended by 6 months validity so went hunting for it for the first time. Thanks again.

    Hi all

Anyone got any experience trying to cancel cash flights with South Africa Airways? I have 3 flights booked (2 people, so technically 6 flights) with them for the end of May, none of which are currently cancelled. I would be happy to cancel one of them but ideally would change the other two to flights next year. Interested in hearing anybody’s experience.

May be one for the HSBC Premier insurance. Anybody claimed on this yet and been successful/unsuccessful? I do wonder if this would take a while though!

    Thanks!

OT – I called virgin for a transfer to Hilton Honors. All went fine on the phone. A week later points haven’t showed up BUT I have an email supposedly from virgin (nearly definitely a phishing attack). Snippet from email below. They have my email address, name and flying club number. Should I be worried?

Thank you for contacting us regarding your HH transfer.

With the current pandemic Covid-19 and the extreme amount of calls that we have on hold for customers with flights in the next few days.

We have decided that we are going to cover extra Data Protection over email instead to help our members. If you are not happy to reply to this email with extra DPA then please can they go to our website and chose a local number to call in to answer the extra DPA questions.

Can you please forward the following information please.

    Name

    Date of birth

    Current and previous address

    Current and previous email address

    Current and previous contact number

Last flight or how you mainly spend your miles

    Thank you for your understanding.

    Kindest Regards,

Apparently its legit but badly written. Was covered a few days ago in comments.

      • Roy says:

I don’t believe it. It’s not like they normally ask you any of that stuff on the phone, why would it suddenly save them time to ask for it by email? Things like previous address? I’ve never had anyone ask me for that except when they needed to do a credit check. This sounds to me like someone attempting to gather enough information to try to do an identity theft….

      • Roy says:

I’m surprised they didn’t ask for you credit card number, expiry date and CVV. For verification purposes, and just to save time, of course….

        • Amar says:

I’m also not convinced, but will call virgin today to find out more

          Thanks

          • Roy says:

If this is genuine (as some people here claim) then someone needs to urgently explain GDPR to Virgin.

  • VentureLog says:

Hello, hope someone can provide info. I recently changed my flight plans (Covid19) when i had to leave earlier than expected from Athens. As it was a busy time i wasn’t able to speak to BA to get them to change the flight date. I waited on my original return flight to be cancelled so i could claim a full refund. It never happened as flight still went ahead. I cancelled just before it departed and applied for a voucher. Unfortunately the voucher application was rejected as journey was started. Instead, it seems like they have said that the remaining part is kept open. If i do book it on another date, would the flight be booked with additional costs (fees or price difference)? I don’t mind visiting Athens again for a short trip. Thank you

  • Nathan says:

Just got my refund voucher from BA and was horrified to se that I have to call them to use it, I cannot use it online- Warning to others, maybe it would be better to get a refund and absorb the £35 pp cost.

    • Rob says:

Wait until you try to use it. There is a lot of other small print you haven’t been told about.
