The new HFP chat thread – Tuesday 14th April

We have decided to run this new daily chat thread on Head for Points.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the defacto repository for random comments and questions.  It is unlikely that the news flow will be so big over the next few weeks that we will need many ‘Bits’ articles, however.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are stuck at home self-isolating, we want the HFP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as its keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HFP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/04/14/the-new-hfp-chat-thread-tuesday-14th-april/comment-page-1 The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

We will continue to monitor how this is working:

we could potentially split it into a daily travel and non-travel chat thread

we may install some basic forum software

we may start suggesting potential topics for daily discussion

Let’s see how it goes.  Take care!

Data point – the iphone workaround still works. I made a booking in haste at T-355 and repented a couple of days later. The bad news is that BA has charged me £100 to cancel (flight was one way for 2 people) – is this the new Ts & Cs?

  • Anna says:

Data point 2 – award availability. I’m booking flights for Easter next year and have noticed that for a booking with a domestic connection, F availability isn’t showing UNLESS you use the “stopover” option while going through the booking process. I found this out by accident yesterday when I was playing around with travel dates. So now I’ve cancelled my J flights and booked all 3 of us in F to JFK, which as well as being an enhanced experience will also allow me to use You First if it all goes Pete Tong again!

    • Anna says:

I can only assume this is an IT glitch as domestic connections don’t have F, but I haven’t had this issue before (or maybe BA just don’t want northern riff faff in their F cabins 😂)

  • Olly says:

Anyone had any joy of getting through to BA to use one of their refund vouchers? Any tips?

  • Michael C says:

Is there a “T4 is closed until at least,,,,” date?
Plaza Premium lounge is still asking me for $20 cancellation fee for early May!

    • TGLoyalty says:

T3 and T4 are still operating departures today.

I suspect they will wait until a few days before your booking to allow you to cancel for free as restrictions could be lifted by then.

  • Lisa says:

I cancelled my club world avios flights to America in September on the 22nd March using your clever work around to avoid a travel voucher and I received an email confirming the cancellation, saying money owed would be refunded. I still haven’t received a refund and can’t get through on the phone. Most of the people who use this method were getting refunds after about 10days, has anyone had to wait longer for the refund and avios redeposit? I’m just worried that it has got lost in the system, I’ve had a couple of bad experiences with avios refunds in the past, I’ve always had to call them in the end to sort it out. Now of course calling BA is impossible.

    • Anna says:

Hi Lisa, yes plenty of us waiting 4 weeks and more for cash refunds! Options are S75 via credit card or some people have used a service being offered by someone on Flyer Talk, a guy called BA Refund Helper but other readers know more about this than me.

  • EJH says:

Does anyone know whether a Comair flight can be included on the same booking reference as a 241 return flight LHR-JNB so bags can be interlined through (obviously 241 wouldn’t apply to the Comair flights)? This would be for a new booking – just thought would ask to save time calling BA (and if not poss, just book separately online). Thanks in advance!

    • Anna says:

No, companion voucher can only be used on purely BA metal bookings.

  • Jimbo says:

Amex Travel quoting 8-10 weeks for a refund on my Turkish flights to Japan (which were cancelled two weeks ago). Seems a bit…long

    • Anna says:

Have you opened a dispute? Amex give estimates for resolutions but it can often be a lot quicker.

      • Matty says:

I booked my BA flights through Amex travel. The flights were cancelled about 3 weeks ago. Amex travel said it is currently taking 8 weeks for refunds from BA. I booked these on my Platinum card. Can I raise a dispute to move the process along quicker?

        • Anna says:

Right, I see what you mean now! I’d run this past Amex travel, they might have experience of this situation. There’s nothing to stop you opening a dispute though in the meantime, though I would leave it another couple of weeks.

          • Jimbo says:

Not sure how keen Amex will be to do a chargeback on Amex Travel!

  • Andrew says:

I see American Airlines are now extending status! Wake up BA – even AA are now, you’re the only airline that aren’t! AA are even reducing requirements for achieving status as well as extending status. BA really are standing out as being the airline that values loyalty the least.

    • J says:

I would not expect any more from BA than the minimum they can possibly get away with.

    • Pangolin says:

My prediction that the two meanest airlines – LH and BA – would be the last to extend status still stands.

Unlike BA/LH, the US airlines and the Asian operators face some meaningful degree of competition on their home turf.
