The new HFP chat thread – Sunday 12th April

Links on Head for Points may pay us an affiliate commission. A list of partners is here.

We have decided to run this new daily chat thread on Head for Points.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the defacto repository for random comments and questions.  It is unlikely that the news flow will be so big over the next few weeks that we will need many ‘Bits’ articles, however.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are stuck at home self-isolating, we want the HFP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as its keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HFP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/04/12/the-new-hfp-chat-thread-sunday-12th-april/comment-page-1 The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

We will continue to monitor how this is working:

we could potentially split it into a daily travel and non-travel chat thread

we may install some basic forum software

we may start suggesting potential topics for daily discussion

Let’s see how it goes.  Take care!

  • Tim M says:

Please may we have some moderation here. Most of the previous comments and their authors should be removed.

    • Trevor Gardiner says:

      +1

    • Rhys says:

Yep, we’re having some issues with one persistent user who keeps trying to evade the net.

      • Freddy says:

You mean there is not going to be a review on Gregg’s loyalty scheme? 🙁

        • Rob says:

I was going to do Joe & The Juice, which is now my nearest ‘still open’ coffee shop and whose scheme is weirdly compelling!

      • Jonathan says:

Just a thought, there are some banned everyday words where comments won’t post if they contain them. Could the dictionary be increased to include the common swear words?

        • Lady London says:

          What did I miss?

          • Kev 85 says:

Some loser going to great lengths to get attention.

          • The Urbanite says:

The sour comments normally come at about 4/5am. The other morning someone posted a particulary foul diatribe and somebody responded asking them not to swear on HfP by using the word “economy”!

        • Peter K says:

+1 to banning swear words and racist terms.

          • Andrew says:

Where do you draw the the line without denigrating the good people of Scunthorpe?

      • the_real_a says:

It does beg the question what life this person has. I read a comment last week that was vile in nature, schoolboy smut. But was obviously from someone who reads the blog as it referenced certain individuals. Basement dweller.

    • BJ says:

They don’t have enough staff for more effective moderation. A simpler solution would be to have the comments by subscription only backed up with registered usernames and payment details but I can understand why HFP would prefer not to go down that route.

      • EwanG says:

Or a trust model. Once you have reached so many posts which have not been moderated you are able to post freely. Until that point there is throttling of your posts so no more than one per hour/day whatever. Many existing posters set up with appropriate levels of trust at the outset.

  • Graham says:

Just called BA to get cash refund for a cancelled Cape Town flight on April 24th. Got through straight away and took just a few minutes

    • U old git says:

Graham. Good post. I rang BA after reading and I too got straight through, Avios already back in my account cash may take 3 weeks. Thanks again.

    • Trevor Gardiner says:

Yes, same for me yesterday for a May 22nd flight the US. Avios immediately refunded, cash back to Amex in “7-10 working days, sooner if India come off lockdown, but that’s unlikely”. One thing, this refund will put my Amex into severe credit so I guess they will credit my bank account or (shocker) send a cheque (a what?). For me, great service from BA.

      • BJ says:

The always say 7-10 days. There is a good chance you will see refund on your card by Tuesday or Wednesday. My last two took under 48h.

      • Genghis says:

You need to be proactive if you want the money elsewhere.

        • Harry T says:

Credit refunds to your bank account won’t happen at pace without your intervention in the current situation. I phoned about one the other day and they said the back office will take longer than the usual 3-5 days to refund me.

    • Steve says:

I called and requested a refund on Friday, Avios still not back in my account and no confirmation email. When I go to Manage my Booking it states “We are currently processing a cancellation and refund for this booking”.

Has anyone else had this? My booking was an Avious booking where BA had officially cancelled the flight.

  • BP says:

Does anyone know how far in advance EasyJet are running cancellations? My flight on 21st April is clearly not running and yet my booking is still not cancelled.

    • Dave says:

I’m waiting for an early May flight to be cancelled but they say you have 12 months to claim for a refund. Their policy for transferring to a different flight is generous.

Because your flight has been cancelled, you can transfer for free onto any other flight within our network up until March 2021. You won’t be charged a change fee or fare difference. This means that you can transfer onto flights to our most popular destinations during peak periods, free of charge. From Malaga in September to skiing in half-term or German Christmas markets…Change to any flight, any time, for free.

      • BP says:

It’s this generous policy I booked my flight to take advantage of. The dates I need in September were £388 so I booked April flights for £85 knowing they would be cancelled and I could change for free to the more expensive flight. The £303 saving will pay a good chunk of my hotel in Lisbon for 3 nights.

    • Barry says:

I had an EasyJet flight for tomorrow (13th). It was cancelled on the 6th April. Still haven’t managed to get through for a refund. Flights were under £100 so no S75 protection?

  • Matty says:

I cancelled a pair of tickets yesterday that I booked in January. I paid 30066 NOK. The amount charged to my credit card (MBNA Horizon) was £2595.

I’ve done another conversion this morning and 30066 NOK is now £2367. Is there any way to claim the difference or is it just tough luck?

    • Tony says:

I can’t for any reason think why. By using a Norwegian point of sale you paid 30,000Kr and when you cancelled you received the same 30,000Kr back.

What you do on the other side of that is irrelevant- had the exchange rate moved the other way there would be no expectation that you would refund MBNA or BA the difference.

    • Lady London says:

      Tough luck.
Unless BA had chosen to charge the original payment in a different currency that you did not click to pay in immediately, or to refund in a different currency than you paid in.

They once did that to me charging an ex UK ticket that had been purchased in, I think UK pounds through a Spanish entity in Euros. When it landed in my credit card statement of course as it was not a GBP transaction it was converted to a £40 higher amount than I had paid, by my card. I rang BA promptly and the charge was cancelled then rebooked correctly as it had been bought, in GBP.

So if BA wasn’t switching currencies on you on either the charge or the refund I think you’re stuck with it in

      • Matty says:

It was the airline (QR) that cancelled the flights but didn’t tell me. Only discovered that two of the flights from the booking had gone when I entered the booking on CheckMyTrip and then checked the airline schedule. I then called for a refund.

I’ll contact MBNA when the refund hits and see if they can do anything.

    • the_real_a says:

There is a chargeback code for difference in exchange rate on a refund. I would also suggest this is S75 territory as consequential loss through failure to fulfill a contract.

  • JD says:

I tried the disabling of JavaScript on my iPad in order to my BA Avios booking but it still just went straight to the Voucher page

  • Rohan says:

Do we know officially how far has BA cancelled majority of flights?
When is it likely going to be extended?

    • Paul H says:

I have same question, currently booked on Avios/2-4-1 to Lima from Gatwick on 1st May. Flight not yet cancelled by BA and still able to book on it despite them having stopped flights from Gatwick.

Don’t want to do the iphone cancellation thing as I paid about £300 return on seat selection.

  • Peter says:

Totally OT, but I wish you all a happy Easter! stay safe and let’s hope we’ll be able to travel again unhindered soon!

    • Chrisasaurus says:

      +1

Good wishes to all hfpers and their families

    • Spursdebs says:

Happy Easter to you as well Peter, and everyone else.

    • Anna says:

Happy Easter to all 🐰. I’m contemplating having chocolate and champagne for breakfast as I’m technically on my holidays for the next fortnight 😂

    • Harry T says:

Happy Easter to you too, Peter, and all the regulars!

    • AJA says:

Peter it’s not off topic at all. This is precisely the point of the chat thread. Perfect place to post your comment. Happy Easter to you and everyone on HfP. 🙂

    • Cat says:

Happy Easter to all HfP people and their families!
Best wishes for the health, happiness and future travels of the whole community!

  • Anne says:

Morning all. Is anyone else still waiting on Virgin to Hilton transfer? The other half and I both initiated transfers on the 28th March, mine landed on the 8th April but no sign of hers as yet which is odd – anyone else in a similar situation?

    • BJ says:

In normal times the problems were at the Hilton end but who knows righg now. I would leave it a few more days and email Hilton if they have not arrived by midweek. Hilton email CS has even quite effective for me this last week with response times same day to 48h, and better than usual support.

    • Mr(s) Entitled says:

Did mine 27th and the better half on the 29th. Both arrived.
