The new HFP chat thread – Sunday 12th April

We have decided to run this new daily chat thread on Head for Points.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the defacto repository for random comments and questions.  It is unlikely that the news flow will be so big over the next few weeks that we will need many ‘Bits’ articles, however.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are stuck at home self-isolating, we want the HFP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as its keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HFP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/04/12/the-new-hfp-chat-thread-sunday-12th-april/comment-page-1 The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

We will continue to monitor how this is working:

we could potentially split it into a daily travel and non-travel chat thread

we may install some basic forum software

we may start suggesting potential topics for daily discussion

Let’s see how it goes.  Take care!

Anyone used Curve (Virgin) to top up Revolut recently?

    • TGLoyalty says:

Using curve in between makes no difference as curve pass the MCC directly to virgin.

Wouldn’t have bothered wasting your curve limit as you could always top up with a credit card.

      • Stephen says:

Thanks, a 5% cash advance fee was charged on 29/03, has anyone topped up since?

        • The Urbanite says:

Revolut change their MCC regularly these days – for some, they’re back to charging cash advances. Top it up with a credit card at your own risk of being charged fees and getting no rewards.

      • Anna says:

I’m struggling with Curve at the moment, despite updating the app it keeps telling me my card is set to Polish zloty and then giving an error message when I try to continue!

        • Anna says:

Apologies, Curve gives me an error message and Revolut tells me my Curve card is set to zloty!!

KLM cancelled our outbound flights in June. I called up for a cash refund but they are refusing and only offering a travel voucher. Any advice? Thanks

    • Lady London says:

Another comment today said you have to persist and insist and eventually they will give you a link for a refund. It’s your right to choose full cash refund under EC261/2004 which, for the avoidance of doubt, supersedes any European national law including Dutch.

If they still refuse ask your UK credit card for a refund under Section 75.

    • Graeme says:

They cancelled my LCY-AMS flight in early May. I called and was refused – I quoted the EU Transport Commissioner who last week said that airlines HAD to refund, they said that many Governments support the voucher. We did that dance for a bit before she said I had to complain in writing. I tried Twitter and got no response, so I tried Whatsapp and had the same conversation again – refused, EU Transport Commissioner, Governments/voucher etc. Keep refusing the voucher and eventually they’ll send you a link to claim a refund.

They’re really trying it on and it really annoyed me. The language they use is incredibly irritating as it’s so misleading.

      This worked for me.

Seems I cannot get Avios from Screwfix – is this a new thing?

    • Carol says:

I earned Avios on 2 purchases last week. The first one was on 6 April and arrived in my account yesterday. Would hope the second amount arrives tomorrow

    • Lady London says:

I did. Think I purchased in January. They were credited in a matter of days.

      • Secret Squirrel says:

A few people mentioned a day or so ago about the Tesco Pet Insurance still not paid out points. Some srated they were going to chase, any update?

    • Jen T says:

Seems Screwfix is one of them – shame!

  • Keith says:

Had tried to make a booking for my return trip on my companion voucher.

Economy half way, then stopover, then business home.

Was told by agent I couldn’t pay for it there and then, as there was a change of class midway through journey they would send to Fare Dept who would then quote.

While waiting for them to get back to me First availability came up. Called to have them quote for First rather than business, they have now sent quote, but with a £35 pp change fee.

Other than the outgoing flight of the trip nothing has been ticketed and all I’ve done is ask them to quote for a different class, I’m not changing or cancelling anything.

Should I really expect to pay a change fee for this?

    • Anna says:

No because you haven’t actually booked anything yet! Sounds like a slightly confused CSA.

    • Sunguy says:

I would doubt that very much…..as it includes a flight in FIRST – Id be very tempted to give YOU FIRST a call with your PNR for the quote – they are of course meant to be post-sales, but you should be able to get someone who knows what they are doing!

  • Brian W says:

Rob, a lot of my replies to comments seem to get blocked 🙁

  • Paul says:

Data point- I booked two F seats for Houston to New Orleans via Amex travel on United. United cancelled my flight but refused a refund as they rebooked me on a service two hours earlier. I tried everything with Amex travel who sadly sided with UA. I filed a complaint with the DOT and formally complained to Amex Travel.
With that detail I then registered a disputed charge claim with Amex Platinum uk who refunded in full in 24 hours.
The platinum card is bloody expensive but they do sort these thing out really fast.
Wish I could say the same for the Royal
Albert Hall and The Henley Festival. Sadly bought via virgin MasterCard who are no use at all and both venues seriously dragging their feet with refunds. Compare that to the Ford theatre in Washington DC and the Kennedy centre who both provided refunds within days.
