The new HFP chat thread – Thursday 2nd April

We have decided to run this new daily chat thread on Head for Points.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the defacto repository for random comments and questions.  It is unlikely that the news flow will be so big over the next few weeks that we will need many ‘Bits’ articles, however.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are stuck at home self-isolating, we want the HFP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as its keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HFP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/04/02/the-new-hfp-chat-thread-thursday-2nd-april/comment-page-1 The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

We will continue to monitor how this is working:

we could potentially split it into a daily travel and non-travel chat thread

we may install some basic forum software

we may start suggesting potential topics for daily discussion

Let’s see how it goes.  Take care!

Is there any likelihood of Amex or anyone else offering new/better bonuses & incentives for signing up for new cards?
I’m holding off applying for a new BAPP on the off chance of some promo or other.

    Thanks.

  • Andrew MS says:

I experienced disruption on Lufthansa . I took the outbound flight but the inbound was cancelled . The total value of the return flights was £172 . My receipt doesn’t break down the price other than “flights and taxes” but I seem to remember the outbound was about £55 meaning the inbound was £117 . Expedia not responding so When I make a s75 claim , should I claim for £117 or just half of the £172 ? Or will AMEX provide guidance when I make my claim?
    Many thanks

    • Charlieface says:

Claim £172 and see what happens. But how did you get home? Do you not want to claim for extra costs incurred instead?

  • onlysuites says:

I want to cancel my BA Amex premium plus card. If I cancel I don’t loose the vouchers in my account right? Or has that changed recently?

    • Genghis says:

Only if you don’t hold onto them tight enough.

    • Waddle says:

Vouchers remain despite what the phone agent will insist. You still have to pay taxes and fees with an Amex when booking, doesn’t have to be BA Amex.

  • Frank says:

I’ve just had an e-mail from AerClub awarding me 25 tier points because of the current shutdown of aviation.

Not the biggest of gestures, but better than the naff-all-squared so far offered by BA. I wonder if they’re not doing the decent thing and following Virgin’s lead with a 6-month blanket extension to status membership years because they’re hoping they can drive their bitter rivals out of business by continuing to oppose any kind of bailout given the strength of their balance sheet…

  • Reeferman says:

Just had a bunch of cancellation emails from BA for flights to/from LCY in May. Seems the closure at that airport is, unsurprisingly, being extended from the initial end-Apr advice.
Now to get BA to issue the cash refunds ……!

    • Graeme says:

I’ve had a Sunday flight back from Amsterdam put back by two hours, which surprised me.

      • Graeme says:

To be clear that’s a BA AMS-LCY booking on the 10th of May.

        • Reeferman says:

Mine were all between LCY and AGP – one of which was as late as 20th May

    • yorkieflyer says:

23 May and 30 May MAN – ALC also cancelled

  • Alex says:

Chat in comments? It’s 2020, so many options which would be way more user friendly.
Did you consider creating a channel in Telegram?

  • Frank says:

On the subject of cancellations, I have a multi-city booking London->Washington->Dallas->Austin->London later this month, of which the last leg flight has been cancelled. BA is telling my travel agent I’m not entitled to a cash refund. Is that right?

    • Reeferman says:

Assuming the flight is all on one ticket (PNR number) then the BA (alleged) advice is absolute nonsense – you are legally entitled to a full cash refund for the whole booking. Could be your travel agent isn’t being truthful, of course.
Am currently having the same issues with Qatar – if you can’t obtain the cash refund, keep a record of all conversations (and emails preferably) and make a S75 claim on your CC.

  • Mikescores says:

Hi Rob, team, HFPers – hope you are all keeping safe.
Looking for any suggestions – we were in Vietnam and were told that the government there were about to put all foreign visitors into quarantine and we should leave asap (in addition to all of the Hanoi hotels closing down hour by hour). This was Saturday 14th March. We spent hours trying to contact Qatar Airways on every number under the sun – Hanoi (office closed), Doha , an international number, London – get through, hold, cut off, repeat. Attempted to amend online to fly on Sunday 15th – message to cancel first, then rebook at an exorbitant price. Did not wish to cancel and chance losing our booked flight – this was our backstop if all else failed. Finally, our son in UK succeeded in amending the booking but at a cost of £1,071 for the three of us. This, in spite of a message on Qatar home page that re-bookings three days or more before the booked flight would be done free of charge. We made the flight and on the way explained to the senior cabin steward what had happened. He took all of the details and assured us that in such circumstances QA would refund the charge and promised to pass on all of the details. Yesterday (1st April !!) after a telephone call, several e-mails and reminders and a copy of the rebooking message, received an e-mail from E-commerce “Support” that QA would not refund the charge as we had not made the amendment by telephone. Great system – don’t answer the phone and then blame the passenger. We have been flying with QA in their premium cabins for a number of years now – but will we continue to do so ??
    Any suggestions welcome.
PS – apologies for rambling on !!

    • Rob says:

Take screenshots from the website and launch a MCOL / small claims case later in the year.

    • Ali says:

How frustrating. How was the £1071 amendment fee paid? Is section 75 a possibility?

      • Erico1875 says:

I remember how unhelpfull Qatar were during the Ash Cloud. They were seling tickets for £2K + but were unwilling to reschedule us on any of tthose flights. Horrible airline. BA everytime for me
