Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The new HFP chat thread – Thursday 2nd April

We have decided to run this new daily chat thread on Head for Points.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the defacto repository for random comments and questions.  It is unlikely that the news flow will be so big over the next few weeks that we will need many ‘Bits’ articles, however.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are stuck at home self-isolating, we want the HFP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as its keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HFP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/04/02/the-new-hfp-chat-thread-thursday-2nd-april/comment-page-1 The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

We will continue to monitor how this is working:

we could potentially split it into a daily travel and non-travel chat thread

we may install some basic forum software

we may start suggesting potential topics for daily discussion

Let’s see how it goes.  Take care!

Secret Squirrel – are you beginning to believe me after all? 😉

  • Peter Taysum says:

Am now beyond the 14 day period of BA cancelling flight; I phoned and they said they would refund for the HOLIDAY. As per the other article supposed to refund within 14 days. Should I now start a section 75 or wait? Paid for with AMEX.

  • Henry says:

It’s going to be interesting to see if all these Virgin miles land tomorrow.

Personally I don’t think they will do.

    • JP_MCO says:

      ???

      • Doug M says:

Someone has said the monthly sweep of VS miles to Hilton points happens tomorrow.

        • BJ says:

That’s nonsense unless things have changed. The norm was for miles to leave FC 0-3 day after request and arrive Hilton 7-10 days later. Only deviation I ever saw was when Hilton had IT issues early last year and they took about a month to be credited.

  • Marat says:

Got my KLM flight cancelled, but they only offer vouchers as a refund option, not cash. Does anyone know a way to convince them to issue a cash refund instead? Thank you!

    • Stu R says:

It depends on whether you’ve cancelled your booking and the flight is still operating, or they’ve cancelled the flight. If it’s the latter, you’re entitled to a refund, if the former, then technically they don’t need to give you anything, so the voucher is a bonus.

      • Also says:

From Flyer Talk reports, KLM are being prety bad about cash refunds so it might be a chargeback situation

  • Mike says:

Hi all has there been any posts from Harry, I have looked everywhere yesterday and saw none – I am getting worried – I miss the guy.

    • Cat says:

      I’m a little worried too.

      • Mike says:

Hi Cat – I thought it was just me not seeing his comments. Do we know if anyone can send a welfare email to check he is OK.

      • BJ says:

Wouldn’t worry yet. He comes and goes, and may reappear under a new username.

        • Lady London says:

Positive is that I haven’t seen any of the relatively unpleasant posters from Sunday reappear either. Was wondering if any er….executive action was taken for all. Getting quite worried really. But have appreciated the calmer atmosphere.

          • James says:

Yes, it is noticeably calmer. And lets be honest, the unpleasantness was shared out equally between him and those others posting.

        • Kev 85 says:

He posted on Monday morning didn’t he? The posts might have been deleted before many people saw them though

  • Vit says:

Just want to share experiece – – my BA cash booking flight cancelled through the phone on Tuesday and get refund in my BA amex today. Was told to expect up to 14 days or even longer in this unprecedented time.

Not sure if cancelled using the go around It technique shown here on HFP or phone in (if you can get through) make any difference in term of refund processing time.

    • BJ says:

Got mine using the workaround in under 48h too.

      • Liz says:

@BJ GGRRR! It’s frustrating some seem to get refunded automatically and some have to go to the back office and on to the huge pile of manual cancellations.

        • Jody says:

I did put a comment on the second to last page of the workaround thread as to what I was told. Don’t know if it applies to you? Basically, if your ticket had to be reissued for any reason – in my case I booked the outbound first, then added the inbound when it became available, so ticket was reissued, then the system can’t deal with this automatically for refunds (no idea why) so it has to go for a manual one.

I’m still waiting since doing it on 19th March, although my amex companion voucher did finally show up in my account yesterday. Still no sign of the avios or cash refund for taxes though.

          • Liz says:

Yes I was told that too. Voucher appeared back in account instantly.

        • BJ says:

You could have knocked me down with a feather Liz, U thought the most likely outcome was that the refund wouldn’t arrive at all and I would be chasing them for it weeks later. Not feeling anything other than relief. Trusted them by leaving our Xmas trip in place so I may still end up with regrets.

    • Liz says:

Three weeks and still waiting for Avios and money to return

  • Chris says:

    Some good news

Virgin to IHG points – requested 25th March, arrived overnight.

    • Mac D says:

How many if you don’t mind us asking? I’m still waiting for 500k

      • Chris says:

It was a mere tenth of that. Just the 50k.

        • Colin MacKinnon says:

My wife’s 100k got an email within 24hrs asking for the usual details and the points have left her account.

My 220k – transfer applied for by email last Thursday an hour before the wife – haven’t gone anywhere and after a couple of texts asking for info I got a message in the early hours of this morning saying:

Busy with Covid-19, concentrating on those due to travel in the next 72 hrs and “if you aren’t travelling in the next 72 hours our sincere apologies that we are unable to assist you right now”.

    • Ian says:

Text message correspondence for me was last Sunday (29 March) – points have cleared today.

  • Liz says:

I transferred our Virgin miles to IHG by text last Wedn and the pts arrived in our IHG accounts today. Still got 9960 miles left – waiting on 40 pts from CC to post so I can move the rest. Makes me sad to do this 😢
PS Hubby received one of those emails asking for more info even though the text said the transfer was done. I didn’t reply to the email giving them more info and the points still arrived ok.
