Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The new HFP chat thread – Monday 30th March

We have decided to run this new daily chat thread on Head for Points.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the defacto repository for random comments and questions.  It is unlikely that the news flow will be so big over the next few weeks that we will need many ‘Bits’ articles, however.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are stuck at home self-isolating, we want the HFP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as its keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HFP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/03/30/the-new-hfp-chat-thread-monday-30th-march/comment-page-1 The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

We will continue to monitor how this is working:

we could potentially split it into a daily travel and non-travel chat thread

we may install some basic forum software

we may start suggesting potential topics for daily discussion

Let’s see how it goes.

We will do a separate article in a day or so about how we plan to run the site over the next few weeks.  Take care!

So, given events, the sphere of microbiology certainly isn’t something to be sneezed at…

  • Ace says:

“First they came for the Intercontinental Ambassadors, but I did not speak up, becuase I was not an Intercontinental Ambassador”

  • Jeff says:

Yep. It would also become harder for people to make fake profiles to defend themselves from criticism of their odd behaviour.

  • Gary says:

Anyone got any tips for cancelling easyJet flight for a full refund? Cannot for the life of me get through to them on the phone and can’t see the refund option online? Thank you I’m advance.

    • Dave says:

Someone suggest emailing them a screenshot of your cancelled flight with a request for refund to customer.support@easyJet.com. That way you have a record of contacting them if you need to do a charge back. Alternatively just go via your credit card company. I have flights in may that have not been cancelled yet but expect them to be.

      • Vit says:

Dave, as I understand easyjet has suspended all flights except “requested rescue flight” by the GOV. I think it is just a matter of time before you receive the flight cancellation email.

        • Dave says:

My thoughts are that they are waiting till nearer the flight date before cancelling in the hope that people take the voucher proactively rather than wait for formal cancellation and right of refund.

          • Lady London says:

I think they’re overloaded, have forloughed most of their staff and are only flagging flights as cancelled in MMB about 3 days ahead and sending cancellation emails about 24hrs after that on a rolling basis.

They cancelled all flights on some days three weeks before they announced the cancellations and info has been coming through on rolling basis as above.

I am particularly sorry for Easyjets lively staff in the South Africa call centre as I’m not sure how much their government helps them in this situation and I would suspect if you’re not wealthy, would the South African health system be able to cope with the families they Mayes h be supporting.

    • Charlieface says:

      Try 01617749879.
      Otherwise do a chargeback

  • Micky says:

I think the Virgin system is now even more overloaded it’s been 36 hours now trying to sort out a transfer to Hilton, not hopeful

    • Jonathan says:

Mine went through yesterday after a 24 hour wait .

    • Jill (Kinkell) says:

I texted, got a reply within 24 hrs. Virgin account showing reduced amount. Told it takes up to 35 days to reach Hilton.

    • Ian M says:

I did a transfer out of Virgin last week. The miles left my Virgin account on Wednesday. No sign of them arriving in my Hilton account yet, and no email confirmation of the transfer received whatsoever.

    • Nick_C says:

I sent them a WhatsApp at 12.37 yesterday then saw posts on here saying SMS was quicker. I sent an SMS at 14.20 and got a reply at 09.44 today.

SMS seems to be the way to go.

      • Mac D says:

I did both sms and whatsapp got an inital contact but no reply after 18 hrs now

  • akbar says:

everyone is panicking by sending their virgin miles to hilton.
could this actually be a way they may be running a profit.

    • TGLoyalty says:

Not sure I understand how that would work.

They would be paying Hilton actual cash for the points (or atleast creating a bigger liability on the balance sheet) vs nothing if people were holding onto them?

    • Rob says:

Paper profit, perhaps. It’s all about cash at the moment.

  • Anna says:

Thanks to HFP and You First who have almost reignited my faith in BA with their willingness to be accommodating I now have all my Avios and companion vouchers and so far half my cash outlay!
Just need to be able to re-book now before the inevitable devaluation…

    • Liz says:

I am still waiting for Avios and fees/taxes refund after 16 days. I called first time and got India, called a 2nd time via YouFirst and told as it was a reissued ticket with return and domestic leg added later that it would have to be done manually. Just have to patient I suppose……

  • Andrew says:

Any update on IHG extending status – I was seeing some on here last week saying status was extended to end of 2021. I’m Spire Ambassador and spring far just saying end of 2020 with no change to even the number of nights required to retain.

    • Secret Squirrel says:

      Andrew:
IHG are being slow introducing any changes recently, sure it will happen. The reduction in points needed for Spire has not been rolled out as still states 75k needed when it should read 55k.

      • T says:

Thanks. Hopefully they will adjust their offer again as at this rate even 55k seems unachievable. Here’s hoping they mirror Hilton.
