Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The new HFP chat thread – Saturday 28th March

We have decided to run this new daily chat thread on Head for Points.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the defacto repository for random comments and questions.  It is unlikely that the news flow will be so big over the next few weeks that we will need many ‘Bits’ articles, however.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are stuck at home self-isolating, we want the HFP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as its keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HFP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/03/28/the-new-hfp-chat-thread-saturday-28th-march/comment-page-1  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

We will review how this works after a few days:

we could potentially split it into a daily travel and non-travel chat thread

we may install some basic forum software

we may start suggesting potential topics for daily discussion

Let’s see how it goes.

We will do a separate article in a day or so about how we plan to run the site over the next few weeks.  Take care!

    Expedia / Ebookers
Has anyone any experience of claiming refunds for cancelled flights from this lot ?
My call was answered after 1hr 30 and I could hear someone in the background prompting the agent to tell me that she needed to call the airline and she was putting me on hold . 35 minutes later she is back telling me she will call me back .
I am not actually expecting her to call me back as I have read reports that this is their Modus Operandi, to wear down the customer

    • Simon Morgan says:

Genuinely this is not their MO. They like many other call centres are handling hundreds of thousands of calls and then there was the cancellation of the Olympic that added to that burden. I had hotels booked with them via hotels.com and they have been contacting the hotels to ask them to work with them so they can refund customers and hopefully renook for another date. We had bookings with niche places who need the cash but hotels.com came through, cancelled the bookings and refunding so hopefully all good (still waiting on the cash onto my card).

    • Alan says:

I was in a queue for ages with Expedia then some to someone who said they’d put me on hold, then I ended up back in the queue! 🙁 Gave up.

  • Tom1 says:

    Morning all…

I have a hotels.com booking for Easter. Paid with Tesco/hotels.com vouchers! (£90 vouchers, £50 credit card)

Normally Tesco/hotels.com vouchers are non refundable even if the booking is refundable (which it is).

Anyone have any experience of cancelling one of these recently?

    • meta says:

People reported yesterday that they contacted Tesco CS and they gave them back the points and hotels.com refunded cash.

  • Simon Morgan says:

What would you spend all your points on when we get through the other side?

  • Craig says:

For anyone with time to spare! e-Rewards seem to be back to 2000 Avios a month, this may have been mentioned before and I missed it amongst all the trolling! Here’s hoping there is something to spend the points on when this is over.

    Love, peace & bananas!

    • TokyoFan says:

In the new system, you should find that you can make a multiple ‘purchase’ – i.e. 2×2000 so you don’t have to wait the 30 days between lots of 2k. When you get to the shopping cart screen, change the quantity. Depends on you having enough point, obvs, but increases earn potential.

    • Doug M says:

I signed up to that to get some bonus or other. Made maybe 10 or 12 attempts, and each time after 5 minutes of questions they said you’re not suitable. Seems to me they gather info and don’t reward.

      • Lady London says:

+1. Them and another one had clearly taken data on a so-called rejection after loading questions answered. I forgot how I proved this, somehow it came back to me on a later survey that they couldn’t have had the data any other way. I challenged them with proof and got no reply.

    • Anuj says:

Where is the info about 2000 points? I can’t seem to find any links etc

  • Squizzes says:

Hi, I have a flight 3 Apr LHR-LAX Delta ticket Virgin plane. They have made a schedule change to the outbound flight by 2hr 40 minutes. Would I be able to refuse this change to request a refund? In manage my booking it mentions e-credit not refund.

    • Lady London says:

Suggest you Google EC261 or look on MSE. On long haul they may get away with it as not a significant change. Keep watching it’s highly likely something else will cause a bigger change or part cancellation and then they couldn’t argue it.

    • Squizzes says:

I had a call from my travel agent today. As longer than 90 minutes i do not have to accept the change and Delta will process the refund, I am so pleased.

  • meta says:

Not for me. Have had lots of them become payable in the last 3-4 days.

  • GW says:

I made a cash booking to NYC in WTP for July (all done via the BA website as a return booking) where my outbound flight is on American Airlines and my return flight is on BA. I then upgraded my return flight to CW using Avios (plus the extra fees/taxes in cash).

Am I right in assuming that if American cancel my outbound flight or BA cancel the return flight, then that will trigger the cancellation of the entire booking and all monies paid plus all Avios points used should be refunded ?

    • AJA says:

Correct. I would wait for AA to cancel the flight. But you run the risk that it won’t be cancelled. If you don’t want to fly then you will have to take the e-voucher which you can apply for up to close of check in (in practice no later than 90 mins before)

  • Craig says:

Similar for me, including one small one then went from payable to declined. That will teach me to wait for 25% bonus.

    • meta says:

Complain. I always get it reversed.

    • BJ says:

Never thought it a good idea to leave money sitting in this place. Always seen it as my fun avios but in last few weeks I’ve been using BACS instead. Seems to be business as usual for me too.

      • Craig says:

I never risk large amounts, we are talking a few quid here.

      • Genghis says:

I’ve been burned in the past. I always transfer out. AwardWallet makes it easy to see.
