Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The new HFP chat thread – Saturday 28th March

We have decided to run this new daily chat thread on Head for Points.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the defacto repository for random comments and questions.  It is unlikely that the news flow will be so big over the next few weeks that we will need many ‘Bits’ articles, however.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are stuck at home self-isolating, we want the HFP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as its keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HFP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/03/28/the-new-hfp-chat-thread-saturday-28th-march/comment-page-1  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

We will review how this works after a few days:

we could potentially split it into a daily travel and non-travel chat thread

we may install some basic forum software

we may start suggesting potential topics for daily discussion

Let’s see how it goes.

We will do a separate article in a day or so about how we plan to run the site over the next few weeks.  Take care!

Datapoint: after truthfully telling them what I’d done and providing documentation several weeks ago my Monese account has not been closed (yet). I’ve cancelled my premium membership and will confine myself to a couple of top ups a month, if that.

  • Dannyrado says:

So, what to do with 600k virgin miles.

What happens if you book a load of klm or delta flights online? Any chance they’ll be honoured? Not many online uses for miles, and a 2-3 hour wait for call centre.

    • TGLoyalty says:

Who knows because the points aren’t owned by the airline itself.

However, in cases where airlines have gone bust partner awards weren’t valid as I believe the award flight is paid for at the time it’s flown and not before.

  • Matthew says:

It seems BA have pulled out of the Helsinki route entirely. I have a booking in Jan 2021 which is showing as cancelled.

It was booked by phoning Avios and using a Lloyds upgrade voucher for Club Europe. Are they obliged to re route me with Finnair in business or can they insist on refunding Avios/fees etc? My Lloyds voucher has now expired but used in time as they are book by dates rather than fly by. Many thanks 👍

    • TGLoyalty says:

      They should re route you

Others seem to have an option to book any finnair including the widebodies.

    • Anna says:

You are entitled to a re-route unless EU261 is changed again, though getting BA to play ball is a whole other issue.

    • Matthew says:

Ok thanks both. I have a flight later in the day with Finnair in business so would need to align with that. Fingers crossed. Will it now attract long haul APD even though it’s 2 separate tickets but same carrier or will it just be short haul APD. I’m not sure on the APD rules when flying ex EU.

  • J says:

Lufthansa cancelled my flight next month but have said they are not processing refunds until further notice. What does this even mean?! And I thought it was hard getting a refund for my BA flights. Annoyingly I paid Lufthansa on Curve, so let’s see what their charge back process is like.

    • ChrisBCN says:

It means they are being cheeky but complying with the letter of EU261 rules to buy them some time. They are clearly breaking the spirit of the rules though, so let’s see how long they can get away with it for.

      Terrible behaviour really!

      • Don says:

EC261 says refund in 7 days and no vouchers- how are they complying with the letter or even the spirit of Reg?

  • MartinF says:

Got reward flights booked for July with Virgin. Am I right in assuming I’ll get the taxes (£1,400) back but lose the points if Virgin go bust?

    • Matthew says:

If you booked with a credit card…

      • TGLoyalty says:

Then you have s.75 and consequential loss cover and can argue for replacement flights in the same class of travel.

      • Shoestring says:

this is quite a good strategy – seal in your S75 protection with a far away refundable flight

how does it work with Virgin points flights? if you cancel, do you get back your points minus a small fee same as BA?

  • Oli says:

Ryanair cancelled one of my flights and say that in the cancellation email:
You have the right to re-routing to your final destination, under comparable transport conditions, either at the earliest opportunity or at a later date at your convenience subject to seats being available.

My cancelled flights in April were about £50 each. Do you think i can get a rebooking in August when prices to my destination are more like £150? Not sure the wording was intended at rebooking a free flight four months later

    • AJA says:

You can choose to fly when it suits you so in theory yes you can rebook for August. The caveat is in the words “subject to availability” so you need to check what booking class your current Ryanair flights have and see if they have the identical class available in August. I know Ryanair only has economy seating but you might find that there is something different on those peak month flights and therefore no availability.

    • Charlieface says:

Doesn’t have to be with the same airline, nor does the other airline need to have an interline or distress arrangement. It must be the same booking class and reasonable though

  • MC1808 says:

Are the costs to cancel a ComAir Avios flight booking the standard £35 per ticket (or the tax/charges if lower)? Thanks

  • Henry says:

Just been told by a Virgin Flying club agent that Delta are apparently going to be backing Virgin with any flying club redmeptions if Virgin go bump.

    • Chrisasaurus says:

Yeah and there’s man works in our chip shop swears he’s Elvis….
