Where can you fly on British Airways from Heathrow Terminal 3 to visit the Qantas and Cathay lounges?

Long time readers of HfP will know that when you are flying from Heathrow Terminal 3 you are spoilt for choice when it comes to airline lounges.

The excellent Qantas lounge (review here) has now been open for almost two years, and is regarded as one of the best in the UK.  You also have the Cathay Pacific lounges (review) which are a great place to go if you have a BA Gold card and would like to enjoy some fine restaurant dining in the First Class lounge.

If that wasn’t enough, American Express has also made Heathrow Terminal 3 its home for one of the first Centurion lounges to open outside the US. Existing Centurion lounges have a very good reputation so this is one to keep an eye out for when it opens in early 2020 – vague image of the entrance below!

As well as the amazing Qantas and Cathay Pacific lounges, you can also visit the T3 American Airlines and British Airways Galleries lounges.  These are both perfectly acceptable but not in the same league as the others.  If you have a Priority Pass card, there are also two excellent independent lounges – Club Aspire (reviewed here) and No 1 Lounge (reviewed here).

Have you flown from Terminal 3 in a while?

All this means that Heathrow Terminal 3 is the place to be if you want to relax in style before a British Airways flight (unless, of course, you can use the BA Concorde Room in Terminal 5!)

If you thinking about weekend break destinations for an Autumn trip, you might want to put a British Airways Terminal 3 route on your list.

British Airways is currently running a sale, as we covered here.  As it happens, one of the best Club Europe deals – Helsinki for £210 return, which earns a whopping 160 British Airways Executive Club tier points – departs from Terminal 3.

Remember that you need to be travelling in Club Europe / Club World to access the lounges, or have a British Airways Silver card or above, or oneworld equivalent.  You will need a BA Gold card or equivalent to access the First Class private dining section of the Cathay lounge.

You should also note that the Qantas lounge is only open from 8am to 8.30pm so it is not an option for very early or late evening flights.

Which BA routes operate from Terminal 3?

I couldn’t find an official list anywhere so this is our best DIY attempt – if there are any errors we will update them during the day.  It reflects the changes taking place when the Winter timetable launches in late October.

This list only covers BA flights.  A business class flight on any other oneworld airline would also work.  A very attractive option would be the handful of Finnair‘s Helsinki flights which use the new A350 long-haul aircraft which I reviewed here.  Book yourself in Business Class, for cash or Avios, and you can check out the new Terminal 3 lounges and then fly to Helsinki on a flat bed!

This is where I think we are with British Airways departures from Heathrow Terminal 3:

Short-haul and mid-haul

  • Accra
  • Barcelona
  • Billund (from 27th October)
  • Budapest
  • Gibraltar
  • Hannover (from 27th October)
  • Helsinki
  • Lisbon
  • Luxembourg (until 27th October)
  • Lyon (until 27th October)
  • Marseille
  • Palermo
  • Pisa
  • Prague
  • Pula (Summer only)
  • Vienna
  • Zagreb (from 27th October)

Long-haul

  • Cape Town
  • Denver
  • Las Vegas
  • Miami
  • Nairobi
  • Phoenix (until 27th October)
  • San Diego (from 27th October)
  • Vancouver

If you are thinking of making a booking in the current British Airways sale, perhaps it is worth giving a Terminal 3 destination a try?

O/T now been confirmed that alex cruz has left BA.

  • Michael says:

I’ve wanted to fly the Finnair A350 in Biz to Helsinki rather than BA but the prices just don’t stack up at the moment (c.£700 Finnair v £210 BA, although there have been deals previously).
Anyone got suggestions on how to fly this route on the Finnair A350 in Biz for a more reasonable fare?

  • Gringo says:

On the other end of the spectrum, Belfast named UKs worst airport followed v closely by LTN
    https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-49628875

    • Anna says:

Apparently the most drink-related airport arrests in Europe were at Liverpool, Glasgow, Gatwick and Heathrow 😯

    • Lady London says:

That’s a very hard-fought-for title. I am sure LTN only just missed out.

I suppose no one had the gall to propose Manchester.

      • Anna says:

I’m surprised MAN didn’t feature higher on the alcohol arrests list, given how many people start drinking at 5 am and the propensity for insane levels of rage caused by the security process there!

      • Charlieface says:

The bottom five large airports were:
        MAN T2
        MAN T1
        STN
        MAN T3
        LTN

Personally I would have put MAN T1 lower than T3. Either way it’s good to hear it’s going to be flattened and rebuilt. It’s horrific. I recall a number of gates on the left side gate hallway one needs to come off the jet bridge, down some stairs, under the gate hallway through some service area and back up the stairs on the other side, all without lifts.

    • John says:

BFS International indeed absolutely terrible (especially the alleged executive lounge).

BHD George Best is fine though.

    • Double Dee says:

Heathrow T5 is most definitely the worst for security staff, last few times I have witnessed
      – the staff swearing at customers just as they leave,
-shouting/swearing at someone for walking through the scanner cos the staff member was not looking when the person walked through
      – The dumbest is shouting at people that if they don’t put their trays away then their items won’t be able to come through when clearly the people leaving the trays already got their stuff, basically lazy staff can’t be bothered to put the trays away

Now compare this to every other European airport and you will realise what a bunch of rude people they have working at Heathrow screening

      • John says:

They are pretty rude everywhere else in Europe too, you just don’t know what they are saying because they aren’t speaking English.

      • Lady London says:

I always put my tray away and will hoover up a couple extra emptied ones and put them away too if it’s blocking new trays coming through the machine. It takes me seconds and speeds things for everyone.

  • Fiona says:

I know you focus on the business market but in the BA sale I just got 2 returns to Vancouver from T3 for £759. Pretty good price. The fare is £48, the rest is taxes. Hand luggage only but we can cope with generous hand baggage allowance. Thank you for alerting me to the sale.

    • Doug says:

woah is that still on? sub £800 looks good, I was pricing air canada but not sure if May is warm enough…

  • Ant says:

OT: looking for RFS to Zurich. The options are 22,000+£1; 17,250+£26; 7500+£111.
If I book the 7,500 option and cancel what would be the fee paid? £1 or £111.
Also which would you consider the best option – apologies but i am getting confused.

    • Polly says:

Should be max 35pp, tho could be 1 pp according to current accounts

    • bsuije says:

What constitutes “Best option” is personal. How Avios-rich are you? If you have 1m Avios in the bank, 15k here or there is loose change. If you have 100k, then 15k may be somewhat more valuable.

Most people tend to value Avios at 1p, so convert the Avios options into “cash”, add on your taxes and see which option comes out “cheapest”. Then go back and decide whether you’re happy to spend that many Avios.

Also, compare the “cash” values above to the cash fares being charged for your flights to check whether you get enough value out of your Avios (aiming for the 1p valuation, if you like).

    • Mikeact says:

No confusion….£1, plus the balance back of whatever you paid….and your Avios of course.

  • Jonny says:

O/T – is anyone able to explain to me why a one-way peak redemption made from LGW – HER (2 adults, 2 children) has been charged 32,398 avios? I thought it was 10,000 per person peak and am struggling to understand (and don’t recall reducing the number of avios used and paying higher amount in cash). Taxes paid: £17.50 per adult and £14.72 per child.

    Thanks!

    • Anna says:

Is that 32,398 for the 4 of you? If so, you may have booked to fly on one of the off peak days in the peak season (normally Tuesdays or Wednesdays).

    • Shoestring says:

would that be a Household A/c where you see points charged proportionately according to total held per person? Have you maybe totted up the total Avios for the 4 of you and forgotten there are others in the HHA who will also have contributed Avios?

      • Jonathan says:

That’s exactly right. Now checked the other account and total movement is 40k avios. Thanks for clearing up – was driving me mad!!

  • Lady London says:

Not to forget also that J and F passengers arriving at T3 longhaul would also have access to AA Arrivals Lounge there. It’s open till slightly later than the (worse) BA equivalent in T5.

    • Anna says:

How is it you can get a full breakfast in the arrivals lounge but not in the normal one? It always annoys me that on landing after a trans-Atlantic flight wanting breakfast while waiting for our usual connection to MAN we’re faced with the Galleries lunch offering which is just not what we fancy at that point!

      • Lady London says:

Why are you not going to the Arrivals Lounge then? Is your connection too tight to exit to landside and then back in again?

        • Anna says:

The one time I asked a member of staff how to get there we were told that we weren’t allowed to use it if connecting and had to use the normal lounge instead. I’ve been too tired to investigate further since then. Also OH hates any unnecessary faffing and wouldn’t think it was worth it just to have breakfast!

          • Polly says:

Try to persuade them. It’s definitely worth it.

          • Lady London says:

You only have to show them your boarding pass from the flight you landed on. The rest is none of their business.

I prefer the noisy crowded Prêt to either of the Galleries Lounges in T5.

          • Lady London says:

            Showers as well.

          • Lady London says:

            * err… not in the Prêt.

          • Nick_C says:

“I prefer the noisy crowded Prêt to either of the Galleries Lounges in T5.”

There are 3 Galleries Lounges at T5. The one at T5B is quite civilised!

          • John says:

There’s no unnecessary faffing as you have to do passports and security either way. It’s probably faster going landside anyway

  • KevMc says:

Any advice on a good hotel to stay at for T3? Travelling to AKL end of Feb. We will have a 5 month old with us, so preferably somewhere which doesn’t require too much faff to get to the terminal.

…also have an overnight stay in HKG on the way, if anyone has a recommendation for an airport hotel there too?

    • Rob says:

If it ever opens (now 18 months late) the Aerotel in the T3 arrivals hall will be the one you want. Otherwise Hilton T2 and then the long walk through the tunnels to T3.

    • John says:

There are basically only two hotels at the Hong Kong airport, a Marriott and a non-Marriott. There is a Novotel in the outlet shopping mall a short bus ride away. Provided the airport train is running (not shut down by protests) it would be better to stay in the city centre
