Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

How HfP clogged up the UK Avis network this weekend

A couple of weeks ago I ran this article about a shockingly generous Avios promotion run by car rental group Avis.

If you hired a Group C or above Avis car for three days, starting on December 8th, 9th or 10th, you would receive 18,700 Avios points.

Living in London, where car rental prices don’t drop too much at weekends, I didn’t fully understand how cheaply you could rent a car outside Central London.  The answer is ‘very cheaply’.

Avis 350

Head for Points was the only site of scale in the UK to publicise this offer.  It was actually aimed at members of Iberia Plus in Spain, and indeed the Avios will be dropped into an Iberia Plus account.  The small print specifically said that UK rentals would count though ….

It seems we created a bit of carnage at Avis depots around the UK.  Here are a few quotes from the HfP comments over the weekend:

Just picked up my car from Cambridge branch. The manager said that they’d been inundated with Spanish rentals and they’re simply not accepting any more bookings as he’d had to chase around to find enough cars for everyone. He was surprised to see lots of Spanish reservations but he had checked with head office and said that these rentals will all be eligible for the 18,000 Avios promotion.

Booked a Group E for €49.18 from Peterborough. Very friendly clerk told me I was the fifth person today with a Spanish booking. They had suspected some sort of fraud and checked it with HO who told them about the promotion. He offered to let me leave the car there as I live 35 miles away, but I’d already pre paid for NCP parking for my own car. He also said they were now short of cars.

I ‘picked up’ 2 cars today. Was planning on driving them round the corner onto a street lit residential area i’d found on google earth but the guy on the Avis desk was really helpful. He waived both £12 refuelling charges and asked me to take the keys but leave the cars in the Avis compound as would be safer. He said he’d had c.20 bookings via Iberia and knew the score for Avios so knew it wasn’t some sort of fraud trick on Avis.

Apparently this was causing huge issues at Avis in Liverpool today. Many many bookings and not enough cars. I set my parents onto this offer and my mum was lucky and got a car. She overheard plenty of folk in there asking if they could just leave the cars there as they didn’t want them anyway!

Picked up my rental this morning from Basingstoke and was upgraded to a Skoda Octavia. I don’t know how Skoda have managed to make a car so boring but they have. The lady at AVIS said that there had been a lot of customers taking advantage of the deal.

Same over here. Their system went down in the morning, when it came back up, they had 17 more bookings. Completely out of cars as well – but they had no idea why, and I didn’t hang around to explain things. Hoping for the best.

I picked mine up today – Avis’s systems were down and reservations had to be completed manually. The attendant told me that there had been such a huge number of cars rented through this promotion and that it had meant that they had no more cars available for hire in their fleet. I was asked “Is this yet another Avios booking” when I arrived there.

So, erm, sorry Avis.  But you did get quite a few bookings out of it!

PS.  If you did a booking under this promotion, remember that you are meant to refuel the car – and provide a receipt – however little mileage you have done.  Avis can fine you if this is not done.

I needed to travel to Leeds this weekend and decided that because it was sort of the same price I’d skip the train and drive. Avis Croydon, friendly chap. Know I rented ‘E’ because of a special offer but he said they ‘upgraded’ me to a Merc. A Class Petrol Automatic. Which is probably a premium car but definitely smaller. Either way with just me I wasn’t fussed and preferred it.

RE: this receipt business, is this only for people that have driven it round the corner/home and back again? I have obviously filled it up and done circa 500 miles in it this weekend, so they won’t be pestering me? Ta!

    • Alan says:

Yes, it’s just if you’ve done a small mileage the fuel gauge will still show as full but there will be less in it for the next renter, hence why they want a receipt.

  • Nick Haley says:

P.S. @Raffles, what do you think this means for the true value of an Avios if this promotion can run successfully? Avis being a pretty solid partner but with rentals being as low as 50EUR for 18,700 Avios that is a low valuation! 0.0027p an Avios.

    • Rob says:

Avis will still be paying 1p per point for those Avios. I don’t know anyone who pays less, including Amex.

      • Nick Haley says:

        Really? So they’re paying £187 a rental ?! :O good grief

        • the real harry says:

That’s why I think many will struggle to get the Avios.

          Hope I’m wrong! 🙂

          • Rob says:

Sunday Times was paying at least £45 for every £30 magazine sub too remember …..!

There is no ‘get out’ here. What is the Avis argument? ‘We created an unbelievably generous offer, knowing full well what we were doing, and were shocked – shocked – when people took advantage of it’?!

I am thinking of invoicing AGL for % of all the revenue I generate for them 🙂

  • FlyingChris says:

Dropped my 3 day rental back yesterday. Only advice was to return it filled back up – no mention of 75km/mile rule (or receipt requirement) at either the start or the end.

Just checked my final PDF invoice that’s in the system via this link:
    https://secure.avis.co.uk/your-avis/manage-booking/request-rental-invoice

No fuel refilling charge on the final bill (just a few pennies more than the prepaid voucher) – and invoice clearly states the milage was only 7miles. Appear to have gotten lucky. Maybe it’s individual branch policy to how strict they are with it. Annoyingly appear to have a AWD 5% discount though. Hope that doesn’t supper the promo.

  • Cate says:

Took ours back yesterday with no problems. Received a customer survey today asking me how I think it went.

Luckily I noticed that although I booked for 3 days dead on when I picked it up I was 11 minutes late (traffic) and if I took it back on the right time my hire would have been classed as only 2 days and 23.9 of a day, so I’d have missed the 3 days min requirement. Phoned them up and they said we had an extra 30 mins to return. Worth checking.

    • Anon says:

Rented Fri lunchtime, returned this (Mon) am..

      My return receipt says;

Days Charged: 3 Days (2 Days 21.2 hours)

So i’s the fact you have had the for over 3 nights that makes it 3 days, if you have done similar to the above, I seriously doubt returning it a couple of hours early will disqualify you from this promo, nothing on the T&Cs say anything about this.

      • Anon says:

        Key part of the T&Cs..

“To qualify, rental length must be minimum 3 days and include overnight Saturday 10th December, and minimum car group C.”

I’ve been charged 3 days, so I clearly qualify.

On a positive note for Avis this has encouraged me to use them for a couple of more rentals in 2017, so in my case of a lapsed customer, maybe the ploy of it being a good old fashioned loss leader to regain custom has paid off? 🙂

        • TGLoyalty says:

3 days = More than 48 hours but less than 72.

Returning 11 mins late means you could potentially be charged for the extra time over the 3 days.

      • Andrew Tucker says:

It’s worth pointing out, that the pre-payment voucher should have been for 3-days. This will be what qualifies for the promotion.

  • Radiata says:

I had already booked an AVIS car from BHX to return to Cambridge and so cancelled to avail of this.

Given a Ford C-Max as told all standard sedans and hatchbacks out of stock.

Noticed on arriving on Cambridge on Thursday eve that the local AVIS lot surprisingly deserted so I must have a few HFP neighbours!

I ha inserted both IB and AVIS Preferred details so hope that did not scupper bonus. We shall but see.

Regarding the ED Fuel charge I believe I have seen some discussion on flyer talk and, as per the t&c, thought that if one challenged the charge with a fuel receipt (however minimal it proved) they could and would refund. Simply a hassle. Those affected might benefit feom.a quick search on the flyertalk AVIS forum.

  • Craig Strickland says:

Should my Iberia number appear on the invoice? It was definitely there when I checked the booking before pick-up?

  • Nick says:

The Birmingham branch we’re brilliant! They let me drive the car to their free secure car park and leave it there. Just been back to drop the key off – no driving required 🙂
The guy said at least 5 people had taken advantage of the deal here!

    • lev441 says:

Think you were in front of me in the queue on friday Nick 😉

      • Nick says:

Haha yep, that was probably me! The woman thought I was off my head when I told her I didn’t want the car! A couple of lunchtimes well spent 🙂

  • Craig Lawrie says:

Might be the wackiest but best thing I’ve done to get miles and ended up driving 270 miles looking for venues for upcoming nuptials! Also got my car serviced too 🙂

So advice please fellow HFPers. My current balance is 0 miles on Iberiaplus. I opened it 6 months ago. I realise I might have to wait 90 days to transfer these miles across to BAEC once they are in my Iberia account, but is there a quick way of getting a mile in your Iberia account if you don’t have the amex points to transfer in please? E.g buying something online for Iberia points. Thanks folks!

    • Rob says:

Works fine if you go via avios.com to get out. To get INTO IB, it seems to be OK going directly from ba.com – I booked an Air Nostrum for Anika last week (lucky woman!) and the transfer worked perfectly first time.
