British Airways now using the No 1 Traveller lounge at Gatwick North – feedback?

In early January, the British Airways lounge complex at Gatwick closed.  This is part of the preparation for the terminal switch which is due to take place in November, with easyJet moving everything to the North terminal and BA moving to Gatwick South.

My thoughts on the Gatwick North lounges have been published here.  I found the British Airways lounges to be pretty awful (see my comments here) and the No 1 Traveller lounge (review) and its sister My Lounge (review) facilities to be pretty good.

When it was announced that BA would be ‘moving in’ with No 1 Traveller for 11 months, I thought it would be an improvement!

The feedback so far on Flyertalk has been mixed, to put it mildly.  I am a little surprised by this.  It seems to come down to the following:

At peak times, the No 1 lounge is now overcrowded.  There are some reports of long waits for food (although, to be honest, not so many that it seems to be a major problem).

British Airways has decided not to issue vouchers for free champagne to First Class and Gold Card ticket holders who would otherwise have been able to get it in the old Galleries First lounge.  No 1 charges £8 per glass.  This is a fair point, although I was surprised that missing champagne had inflamed so many people.

I get a feeling that some of the bad feedback is from people who had never visited the old BA lounge and so were unaware of what was on offer before.  Last time I checked, the BA Gatwick lounge did not have a table football table, for example, unlike No 1.  The No 1 lounge buffet is also substantially better than anything BA offered.

What we can say is that I wouldn’t bother turning up at the No 1 lounge at peak times clutching your Priority Pass card, as your chance of getting in is low.  You can pay £5 in advance to guarantee entrance with a Priority Pass via this website.

Whilst this has not been announced, it seems that BA and No 1 may be taking over the old Delta lounge which is two floors beneath the No 1 lounge, next to the Aspire lounge.  This may be run as a separate facility for BA Gold and First Class ticket holders, although they will struggle to get it up to much of a standard in the time available.

There are also rumours that the move to the South Terminal will be delayed until next Spring, which may account for the Delta lounge conversion.

If you have been in the No 1 Lounge at Gatwick as a BA passenger in the last 2-3 weeks – and I haven’t – do let us know your thoughts via the comments below.

What’s the breakfast offer in the mylounge, please? Will be at LGW next month with about 15mins of lounge time so would rather get in and out of somewhere less salubrious than spend the time queuing… Thanks.

  • OttoMH says:

I was in the lounge from 6.50 to 7.10 this morning and it was a total zoo. Looks much nicer than Galleries Club in terms of decor and nibbles etc but it was uncomfortably full, I left early.

Gatwick Fastrack/Premium was a breeze, no queue at all!

No Gold perks at all… Trying to keep a stiff upper lip..!

OT – Do I need to pre book the aspire lounge at STN with my lounge club card or can I turn up and expect to get in anyway. It will be a sat morn at 9am in April if that helps

    • Rob says:

Can’t pre book so no option !

    • AndyR says:

I was there on Sat at 9:30am and it was dead when I arrived (used Priority Pass). There were lots of tables reserved for people who had pre-booked. It started getting busy around 11am. I found it quite a decent lounge and service was really friendly. You have to pay extra for some drinks by the way e.g Prossecco or some brands of lager.

I have a flight via Gatwick in December 2016 and it’s still saying north terminal.

  • Mike says:

Was there last Friday morning – what a joke.

Took an age for the first desk to issue paper passes, which you have to hand back in 10ft away. Couldn’t hand them in though since the single lounge lady (who was trying her best), had a queue 10 people deep as a chap at the front was arguing with her about how he was going to complain to Ba about the lack of a first lounge. He had a point, but there’s a time and a place.

I threw our passes on the desk and walked in. A zoo!!

Limited places to sit. No glasses for water or orange juice (it was breakfast) so no champagne required. Ordered 5 bacon rolls for the family, by the time they came it was time to go to the gate.

Next time I’m going to pret!

+1 for the old First Lounger. Nothing amazing but it did the job and I always found it less crowded than No.1 travellerwhich often is full of the sleazy jet mob!

  • Ian says:

Last Tuesday morning 7:30-9:00 the No. 1 Traveller lounge was completely overrun. Part of the lounge was closed off. There wasn’t two seats together available anywhere and even when we eventually managed to get a seat it was very uncomfortable in comparison to what I’m used to in BA’s gold/first lounge.
The breakfast selection very poor even in comparison to the BA Galleries lounge. The bacon sandwich I ordered was stone cold. I can live without my usual glass of champagne but please get the basics right.
There are also too few toilets for the volume of people.

  • Leo says:

I’m a bit surprised at the tone of some of the comments on here – the No1 lounge is not solely there for the benefit of BA elites. If Golds and Silvers are narked at what BA is providing they should moan to BA about it. Everyone who flies from Gatwick can use this lounge for a price – which is exactly why the lounge exists in the first place. Negative comments about other lounge users is really inappropriate and rather unfair.

    • harry says:

OTOH there might be a few more oiks vs what you would expect in gold or first lounges etc.

Plus they are fed up. No Champagne at breakfast.

      Get your point, though.
