Chat thread – Monday 13th December

Topic closed

Nothing was wrong with daily chat threads, no need for these hard to navigate forums. Classic case of if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

There were a few things wrong, such as the inability to edit your post, or not getting any notification when people reply to your comment – to name a few.

Must admit I’m not sold on the forum style so far and I’ve used forums for over 20 years.

I always presumed you could buy an off-the-shelf forum solution. I mean, most forums I’ve visited have major similarities.
This one however seems to have all sorts of oddities and issues as if someone has tried reinventing the wheel.

That and the fact that questions that have been answered previously will constantly be asked again because it’s near impossible to find the original thread. I will say that there are still a few things missing with the current forum that is crucially needed, such as the aforementioned notifications, ability to like a post, and my beloved dark mode. It would also be nice if there’s the ability to upload photos without having to resort to a third-party service.

It all seems to have become very transactional and soulless, not a fan so far tbh

You need to use the ‘quote’ button if you want to reply to someone.

    My second suggestion would be:

It’s very unclear what is original post and what is reply.
The convention on the internetz is a greyed out box (and often nested boxes for replies of replies). I think it has become the convention and is used almost everywhere because it actually works really well. I suppose Flyertalk would be the most familiar example to HfPers. In this instance I think it’s fine to copy…

Design suggestion: Nested and shaded boxes to contain quotes when quoting previous posts.

It does that now. Your browser has cached an earlier version of the forums where it didn’t though. Hit CTRL + F5 (or google how to do it if you’re using a browser on your mobile device)

That’s where things break down I think Rhys.
    On Windows desktop Chrome….
It’s highly intuitive to reply to a specific post by hitting “reply” yet that’s not what happens. Reply seems to just add a new unconnected post to the bottom of the thread … which makes it illogical to have it on every post. It’s a redundant button.
You do get a proper attached reply if you hit “quote” but the issue here is that the button actually just dumps the relevant quote as a text in the “reply to” box at the bottom of the webpage (offscreen). With no hint that this has happened. It’s therefore highly non-intuitive and you can end up with several identical quotes in you reply box as you repeatedly hit “quote” thinking nothing happened.

    Design suggestions:
    1) Remove “reply” button on individual posts altogether.
    2) Retain “quote” button on individual posts but rename it as “reply”
    3) When quote button is hit the webpage needs to reposition oto the reply text box.

Hope that all makes sense – tried to make it clear!

    Reply to myself…
Also the quoted text need proper separation (I think a shaded bordered box is the most common convention – with nested boxes for quotes within quotes) to make it clear what is quoted text and what is reply.

    nested replies aren’t working…

Argh! What are all these seemingly unrelated statements all about??? Hopefully we can just continue the chat under one of the daily news articles because this is not good.

It’s Day 1 of the forums launch and a lot of work has clearly gone into their preparation. Of course there are teething problems but it would be good to see how the forums and daily chat settle down. Positive feedback and suggestions are obviously good and they need to be given a chance! Plus putting such comments as above in the correct (housekeeping) forum!

You can – there’s a couple of solutions off-the-shelf that would’ve taken a few days to implement, if that, some of which are even 100% free. Not sure what the rationale for doing a custom devwork was, but maybe we’ll hear about it at some point.
