I am hoping to be able to book a single outbound flight LHR-SYD for two people in Business Class next spring and am starting to do the research. We have several Amex 2-4-1 companion vouchers, including the new vouchers which can be used without having to start the journey in the UK. However, previous HfP articles have advised that reward flights to SYD are difficult to come by. I would consider using two companion vouchers and breaking the journey and we also have 175,000 VS points so a multi-carrier option may be a good solution. We also have sufficient Avios to get to SYD using an alternative carrier to BA. My first instinct is to try to book BA reward seats using a companion voucher but I would like to have a fall back plan. What options should I be considering

Once you know your date of travel, figure out when the availability will appear (usually T-355). Then call the US or Japan Avios call centres to get it booked at midnight UK time.
LHR-SYD availability is extremely hard to find so you need to be quick to get your date booked in.
Luckily it sounds you are Avios rich and you have a backup option if you miss out on the BA metal for the 241.
I can recommend a QR or CX redemption for a far superior J product compared to BA.
I fly UK – Aus twice a year (pre covid) and have only once gotten a BA 241 redemption which has been continually cancelled and moved!
Good luck!
