We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Quick question – has anyone been successful in using their Amex Plat dining credit for gift cards online – eg Gaucho, Duck or Waffle – or ( as I expect) would you need to call and purchase from the specific branch listed in the participating restaurants? Wont be in London again before end of the offer due to new “Plan B” measures?

  • Jill ( Kinkell ) says:

Checked in to London Edition hotel. OK so it’s a points stay, ( cash prices for tonight £570 .) Not a good start when the room is like a glorified HIE and the lighting .all fancy boutique and subdued. It’s dreadful. Telephone didn’t work even though following the instructions….apparently we are supposed know how to operate it. Concierge came to explain! Yes…..it’s not written anywhere, but this is what you do…! Fancy a cup of tea? Oh…no tea ,only coffee pods for the machine . If you want tea..phone Concierge and tea + kettle will be delivered to room. 45 mins later, tea arrives. 6 different varieties, no milk. It’s tea leaf stuff. Oh dear. My expectations are not being managed…yet! Let’s hope dinner at Berners Tavern isn’t a disappointment as well

    • Harry T says:

I really like the hotel but I don’t drink tea :). We enjoyed Sunday lunch at Berner’s. I like having a couple of cocktails in the lobby bar too. Is the Punch Room open? We’ve never been able to visit it!

  • David says:

Generally as a rule designer hotels are shit ( Ian previously designed night clubs) Give me a St Regis or a Four Seasons any day. Save money and go to a Berni inn instead.

  • Mikeact says:

I guess this should/could be in the forum, but as it’s not fully up and running this could be a heads up for some.

Due to delay issues with the Boeing 787, American Airlines will not be flying to either Scotland or Ireland next Summer, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Apparently AA has aircraft parked in the desert but doesn’t have the pilots to fly these planes.

Just checked in at TFS. We did Randox LFT’s yesterday and completed Verifly, via a manual upload of the Randox certificate. Once Verifly had checked the LFT cert we checked in online. Once at the airport it was quick and easy , just passports needed – like pre Covid. I was a little anxious about Verifly having read some peoples comments here, but it seemed to work great for us. Now to find out what awaits us at LHR! 😃

  • Sam says:

I’m considering a one night cash+points stay on NYE in London at a Marriot hotel. Is there any way I can get them to charge my card before checkout on the 1st so that I can make use of the Amex £100 off £400 offer?

  • Scott says:

My love for LHR has hit rock bottom and started digging.

Last long haul was 1hr late.
One before that 5hrs late leaving.

Now my JFK flight, onto a crammed bus for 15-20 mins at A10, is delayed by 30 mins at present whilst they “clean” it and do security sweeps.
At least we’ll disembark in NYC in small groups to aid social distancing 😉

Before that, must have walked the length of T3 plus loads of stairs. At least the transfer bus was there, even if I could have walked quicker.
Then flight connections north was closed so sent to South where everyone was their usual cheery and sloth like selves. About 30 people in front of me, so could have been worse.
Then the escalator was out of action, so had to walk to GC north to use the one there and then back the length of the terminal to GF.

    • davefl says:

In the last fortnight I’ve been disembarked in small groups 4 times and then stuffed 75 pax at a time onto a transfer bus. Pointless or what?

Man-LHR was delayed an hour due to 3 different operational reasons and then when we arrived LHR didnt expect us, had no gate, made us wait 20 mins on the taxiway and then said there really was no gate for another 30 mins so diverted us to a remote stand for buses that took 15 mins to turn up.

Honestly, if this is what it’s like when there’s reduced traffic what’s it going to be like when it’s back in full swing in 2024/5/6/7 (take your pick)

    • Jill (Kinkell) says:

Oh dear. We ended up at a remote stand and everyone crammed onto a bus. Social distancing it certainly was not. The driver kept squashing more in . If I hadn’t been first on ( so much for row1!!),id have refused to get on. . Howevrr, bus was waiting and timing wasn’t too bad

    • Scott says:

Apparently, according to the flight deck, the real reason was that we had 2 flat tyres.
My last flight needed a wheel replaced and a full engineering check before a replacement aircraft, so getting better 😉

      • davefl says:

We should play operational excuse bingo.
        1. Can’t find the bar to push back the plane
        2. Too many physically challenged pax requiring the scissor lift
        3. Cleaning crew still enagaged on another plane
        4. Offloaded a not fit to fly passeneger but there’s no ground staff to offload the luggage
        5. 2 Flat tyres

Come on folks, we need more to fill the card!

My parents both took a Biograd Day 2 self swab in clinic test at 10am yesterday, two negative results back at midnight and 2am.
