The HfP chat thread – Friday 10th December

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

  • Anna says:

At the Doubletree Chester, check in staff apologised profusely for no upgrade as they are full, however our room is perfectly nice and should be quiet!
We got 2 drinks vouchers as well which we’ve never had at a Hilton before.
The car park is huge and very well set out, unlike the Doubletree Harrogate one which is small and chaotic (and not free)!

  • Mike says:

Anna / have a great time – at least no recent deaths in this Hilton, although that huge car park has been previously attractive to the traveller community ( I don’t think they got free drinks vouchers)

    • Gormlesstraveller says:

The local knowledge in these chat threads is amazing, I will have to make use of it more next time I book somewhere. I suspect that the main review sites moderate out stuff like that.

      • Jill (Kinkell) says:

Well,I’ll be giving my view of London Edition which might be a different from others! Currently struggling with dim lighting everywhere. Never has the torch on the phone been used so much!

        • meta says:

@Jill I don’t rank Edition brand highly either. I also try to avoid Kimptons. These are all wannabe luxury hotels…

      • John says:

Well when it comes to Hilton most people who do UK trips will have stayed in the UK properties worth staying in… There aren’t that many

        • cabal of rabid baboons says:

I thought the Conrad via Emyr was excellent

          • Jill (Kinkell) says:

We had a great stay at Conrad St James via Emyr last year. Should have just gone there again!

  • Andrew says:

5% Rebate at Apple on Barclaycard offer has just come through…

Treat yourself or someone you know, and you could get up to 5% cashback on Apple purchases over £250 when you pay with your Barclaycard. T&Cs apply.†

All you have to do is spend over £250 on any Apple product(s), in the Apple store (online or retail stores in the UK), and pay with your Barclaycard (not using digital wallets) to earn cashback to a maximum of £100.

    How it works

Just go to the online Apple Store or an Apple retail shop, and spend over £250 using your Barclaycard between 1‌0 Decem‌ber and 9 ‌Jan‌uary ‌20‌22

Your cashback will be credited to your Barclaycard account by 1 Fe‌bru‌ary 20‌22 (maximum £100 per customer).

  • Amy Brown says:

Has anyone had their points credited from the fairly recent Tesco Clubcard/Hotels.com promo which gave £7,50 points per one night stay if paid for using a Tesco Bank credit card?

I completed several stays but the points haven’t been credited. Customer services can’t agree if it’s a Clubcard or Tesco Bank issue – and I am getting passed back and forth!

    • Rob says:

      Not heard of anyone ….

    • MichaelR says:

Yes, I had mine back in September (about 1 month after a one night stay in Northern Ireland). Shows on my Clubcard statement as “CREDIT CARD 1”. Judging by the comments on the daily chat threads, I think I may be the only person who actually got the points from this promo!

      • ben says:

Lucky MichaelR! According to a poster on a previous HFP forum , It would seem that only people who actually got the email directly were given points (and even then , some had to chase it up.) So all you guys booking multiple £1 hostels in SE Asia – no luck this time!

  • TJ says:

Can someone confirm my understanding of the Amex referral bonus. If I refer someone for a platinum card, who has previously only held a BAPP in the last 24m, they will get the SUB but not the referral bonus and I will get a referral bonus. Correct?

    • Rob says:

      No.

Under that scenario, everything pays out. They get the standard bonus plus the uplift for being referred, and you get the bonus for referring them.

  • Michael says:

Recently checked into the Syon Park Hilton for a night due to a hastily-cancelled weekend away in Copenhagen.

Third time here over a few years and it’s worse every time. No diamond upgrade, lounge long-gone and no drinks voucher even, offered a late check out of 12 (thanks!) and now you have to pay £20 to use the bloody pool!

    Will not be back.

    • Michael says:

On the plus side I used the £259 two-night club room voucher featured here a few months back to book the next two nights at the Sloane Square hotel in a club room – bookable online now at £375 a night! Thanks HfP

      • Rob says:

Enjoy. Kings Road lights etc are in full swing and Peter Jones has an external light display name as part of the facade works ….

Do take a walk down Pavilion Road, about 60 seconds from the hotel, which is a super little niche shopping street now.

  • Sina says:

Anyone knows if I could hold Harrods amex card while on a 24 months break from Amex? (Both Plat & BAPP)

  • Ron says:

BA swapped both our outbound to SFO and inbound from SEA to a B777, both with CS, but as a family of four with young children, I much rather be on an A380 and B781 CW!!! Hope they swap again, both flights not till summer2022.
