Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The HfP chat thread – Thursday 9th December

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

  • David Lawton says:

Just noticed the Avios to Nectar is working again (at least via the shopping.ba.com website) as I’ve just put a request in. Though still waiting for my November 24th Transfer 15 days later….

    • Peter Taysum says:

Thank you so much. Have just converted!

      • Andrew says:

Great, thanks for flagging. Works fine on Nectar app. Won’t get them in time for Christmas, but in time for New Year at least. No sign of any Sainsbury’s double value Christmas offer this year which is a shame.

    • Cabal of rabid baboons says:

Thanks David, appreciate the heads up, fingers crossed that I may have £200 to spend in Argos on Christmas Eve.
Confirmation E-Mail suggested the transfer would take 12 days to appear in my Nectar balance.

  • Tara says:

Hi all – what is the cheapest PCR you have come across for returning to the UK? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

  • Mike says:

Vivo Clinic £15, Click and Collect, a lot of availability

    • LakerDC10 says:

They have this warning thou:Please be advised that you will face significant delays in receiving your results when using this service. Royal Mail is extremely busy due to the season’s strenuous demands through December and January. Your testing samples may take up to 5 working days to reach our laboratory when using this service’s enclosed return envelopes (Royal Mail 1st Class). Afterwards, the laboratory sequencing will require another 24 hours before a test result can be obtained. Per the revised travel rules, you must continue to self-isolate until you receive a negative Day 2 PCR test result.

    • Amy C says:

Nice in theory. However, several dates that seem available are greyed out for appointment slots and when I select Watford it comes up as Bath and I can’t change it 🤦‍♀️

  • Keely says:

Hi can someone confirm the Amex cash back offer at Morrisons applies to gift cards please?

  • Paul says:

have to say I prefer this chat thread rather than the forum. Forum is just too nested, it’s nice to have a cursory glance here and see discussion across a wide range of topics, surfacing things I might have been completely unaware of

    • elguiri says:

It would be great if you could tag your post as to which area(s) of forum it should appear under, thereby having the best of both worlds

      • Tom says:

        +1

      • Rhys says:

I don’t think that would be particularly workable or user friendly in practice!

        • Eoc says:

          +1
Maybe as Mod you just use your judgement when a topic has gathered lots of traffic on multiple days, maybe you send off to the forums then.. Creation stories being an early candidate perhaps?

    • Aston100 says:

I think if this chat thread had the ability to let you edit your posts and also to get notifications when people reply, then that would have been good enough, IMO.

      • elguiri says:

I find the idea of the forum fine, it satisfies the user who knows what they want to look for information about.
However the chat thread is great for people to read something they didn’t know they needed to know, spark an idea etc.
Tagging posts in chat to appear in relevant forums would satisfy both of the above types.
But I also agree with your suggestions for the chat posts themselves. It would save on all the fat finger apology posts, and stop me having to keep a browser tab open for each thread i’m following.

      • Rhys says:

It wouldn’t have been good enough.

One of the benefits of the forum over a chat thread is that it is a lot easier to find information you are looking for. Good luck trying to find anything in old chat threads.

Clearly both systems have their positives and negatives, but I think once we properly push the forum and activity picks up you’ll be happy we did 😉

    • M says:

+1 I like the stream-of-consciousness quality of the comments 😁

    • Rhys says:

The recent topics page should give you a cursory glance too: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/forums-recent-topics/

      • Youllnever says:

Is there any way to get a page for recent posts rather than topics?

  • Rui N. says:

Click on the “recent topics” button on the forum to get an idea of what people are discussing.

  • FFoxSake says:

Haha. Just tried to post a link here to HfP own forum recent topics and it went to moderation… 🙂

  • Tom says:

Free Now AMEX cashback – is it UK only or abroad too?
