We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Anyone seen a Laithwaites Avios offer for Xmas? Was 2k last year I think…..

    • Dani says:

Check Lloyds, curve, Halifax cards for 20% rebate.

    • Phil W says:

So I am looking to stack the following Laithwaites offers:
      Airtime 10%
      Curve 20%
Voldermort 5% (I believe that’s how we refer to it here).

Does anybody have any better offers available (I don’t have PAW).

      • John Caribbean says:

10% blue light discount if someone will give you a code. Will also get you free delivery

    • Ryan B says:

Got a leaflet with my Laithwaite’s advent calendar advertising 10% off plus free delivery on orders of 6 bottles or more with voucher code ADVENT10. Not sure if they’ll check whether you actually bought an advent calendar.

  • Therooster says:

We will be in the Maldives over Christmas/ New Year & will need to complete a PCR test to go into Switzerland. Does anyone know if the hotel would be able to organize a PCR test or will I need to do it in Male?

    • Andrew says:

Hotel Concierges can generally organise anything for the right price.

    • Rhys says:

I would be shocked if the hotel didn’t have an arrangement in place.

    • Lee says:

St Regis charge $120 plus 23%tax for normal PCR and $200 for rapid one

    • Tracey says:

it was the first thing we were asked when we checked in. Definitely the hotels arrange it. You can;t wait until you get back to Male and you wouldn’t want a special trip just for tests.

    • Bob says:

all resorts can arrange it, prices vary

  • BSI1978 says:

Any live Donald Russell codes/discounts out there some kind soul would like to share? Keen to go large on some of their pigs in blankets……

(apols this isn’t travel or loyalty related!)

    • Also says:

Refer yourself and get 10% off. That’s about it I think

    • Oliver says:

I have ‘spend £50 or more, get £10 back’ with them on my BAPP, which can obviously then stack with any other offers. Not much help if you’re not targeted, but worth checking.

  • George K says:

An update on my query about how does the Amex Plat Addlee £10 credit trigger in terms of the monthly basis: I did two trips, one on November 18 and the other on December 2, and got the credit for both. Which means that I was either lucky, or their definition of ‘once per calendar month’ is not based on the concept of a rolling period of 28 days (or four weeks), but rather the switch from one named month to the next.

    • Biki says:

I would say that once per calendar month means one in January, One in February etc?

    • TGLoyalty says:

Think you have you’re definition of calendar month incorrect. You’re talking about rolling 28 days.

And the Paltinum offer works exactly as expected once every month.

      • George K says:

That was my definition of calendar month too, until I asked here first and also looked it up. Under calendar month, it reads “a period of time between the same dates in successive calendar months.” So under that definition, it wouldn’t have qualified.

I’m glad it is the way it is, and I’m glad my -original- understanding of what calendar month means appears to be AddLee’s interpretation too! It’s just that I was led to believe otherwise.

        Many thanks

  • T says:

Any luck from those who ordered an EasyJet advent calendar on actually taking delivery! Chased them on Monday and told it should arrive within 48 hours, however loosing patience!

If anyone has any experience in how easy/(painful) is it to redeem flight vouchers would be appreciated – hoping to use for a trip away next weekend!

    • Tom says:

Still waiting too. Assured delivery by the 8th December. Let’s see! 🤞🏼

    • David D says:

I received mine on Monday this week so hopefully yours will arrive soon

    • aDifferentSimon says:

ordered Saturday afternoon, arrived Thursday last week. Not booked anything (waiting for the December ’22 flights to open) but the voucher has an email address to write to.

  • Graham-Walsh says:

IHG, what a Sh1t show. As predicted, booked me into the Mr&Mrs is a 2 person room, can’t do anything about now until that department wakes up. Can’t cancel online as I’ll lose the free night. Think I’m going to call and see if they can extend it until next year.

    • NorthernLass says:

Why will you lose the free night (thought I read yesterday your voucher is valid till 31/12)? Is there anyone reading today with an unused voucher who could check London availability for you? What do you need (e.g. 1 room for 2 adults and 2 children)?
But yes, total mess and your weekend has been pretty much wrecked with all the extra stress. In the long term I would put in a complaint to IHG and ask for some extra points or something.

      • Lady London says:

Best to challenge IHG now as I advised yesterday and the day before. The hotel that dumped your booking to make a greater profit voluntarily by taking a quarantine contract should be made responsible for giving you same or better at no extra cost to you. You may need to explain to IHG that the hotel has not been taken over not requisitioned as their agents in US especially may not realise the hotel is lying to you and has treated you very badly at short notice.

      • Graham-Walsh says:

It is until the end of the year, but I only have my kids every other weekend, so it takes a lot of planning. However, as the room is non-cancellable, they are telling me I’ll lose it anyway now.

I have another voucher in my account, so can check status of availability. There is nothing as it is so last minute. Correct, need room for 2 adults/2 kids and they can’t request an interconnecting room.

Had to cancel Escape Room, lunch and dinner reservations and the next problem is Winter Wonderland.

I totally lost with them earlier on the phone as they just read from a script. Now that the booking is with the Luxury team, the normal agents can’t do anything with it. They have to email Mr&Mrs Smith who are not awake yet.

        • Anna says:

The room may be non-cancellable but that’s not what the voucher terms are, you get that back if you cancel.
Can children even stay at Mr & Mrs hotels?

          • Graham-Walsh says:

Turns out they can, but in this London one, it is a max of 3 occupancy (due to fire regulations and the room is only 17sqm). I’m guessing a cot/rollout bed, which I don’t mind. It’s the fact they booked it and they were adamant that it could take 4 people.

    • Graham-Walsh says:

Here’s an update on my IHG situation. They rang me back this afternoon and agreed to cancel my hotel booking without penalty (as its under 30 days, remember these people are robots reading scripts). They will refund my free night voucher too, but that will take a few days to appear in my account. Now to try and get them to extend it, that’s for when it appears back in my account and another long phone call.

What is even funnier, I received a welcome to your stay email from the closed CP and the Mr&Mrs Hotel. They really have no idea.

  • Mark Horne says:

I was let down really badly by Randox in the last few days. Booked a drive through test at EMA with results due 23:59 on Dec 6th. Still to date nothing has been issued. Luckily I had the opportunity to take a test at Frankfurt airport, excellent service a 12 hr teat came back in 90mins. This is a walk in service, with a range of services offering PCR tests with results in 35mins if you need them quick. Contegene is located in between the Sheraton/Marriott hotels and the New Work plaza. No pre booking required. Be there before 6pm to ensure timings are upheld, tests can be done after 6pm but then the timings are pushed out. I have pursued Randox and no formal answer from them as I write.

Section 75 the UK credit card you paid on for consequential loss ie additional cost in having to get the other test.

The government’s recent actions towards Randox make it clear timing of results is of the essence.

Chargeback only gets you back what you paid whereas s75 gets you higher cost of replacement
