We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Will I get bonus Avios on BA as a Silver if I buy a BA flight with AA codes or does it have to be BA marketed?

    • Jonathan says:

Needs BA flight number to get status boosted Avios earnings.

    • Steve says:

Tier bonuses aren’t normally awarded on partner airlines, but AA is an exception. I have been awarded Silver tier bonuses in the past on AA flights (IB too).

  • can says:

Dec 7 today, and it is still not possible to link BPme rewards with Avios.
What a glorious IT update it has been…

    • chrism20 says:

The BA update seems to have busted the already signed up auto convert as my postings haven’t moved over this month.

On the subject of BP I seem to have a promotion of some sort linked to me card but there is nothing showing on the app and the staff in the petrol station have no idea what the promo is or how long it lasts. 41L, a coffee and a bottle of water this morning generated 497 points

  • Bob says:

Still can’t login to Virgin Atlantic app nor can I see any activity online, any word from Virgin on these prolonged IT issues?

    • Rhys says:

Had that last week but seems to be back now?

      • Bob says:

can login in fine on the website , no activity showing. on the phone when I try on the app keep on getting “please enter valid login credentials to continue”. have reset password and re downloaded the app but same error

    • Youllnever says:

      Works fine for me.

      • ChasP says:

        App not working for me
Sorry the app is having technical difficulties Please try again

Virgin call centre wait shamelessly put on their website as 2 hours! over the weekend it said 90 minutes. How is that even acceptable?
Transferred Amex points to Virgin and account was already linked but nothing. Call centre tried to help but not been resolved after 5 days of transfer. Also boosted my miles but again, after 4 days there is no luck. Don’t use them if wanting to make an urgent redemption.

  • Tim Lewis says:

Hi all, I’ve checked that this wasn’t raised today, but apologies if it has been repeated before.

I flew to the US last week. Had Covid in November and fully recovered. Had a doctor’s letter to enter the US, no problem at all. My issue is my day 2 PCR has (predictably) come back positive on return and there does not seem to be any exemption for a previous recent COVID infection. Any ideas? It seems crazy that I am free to troll around the US but can’t leave my house in my own country!! Anyone in the same position?

    • Jonathan says:

You might’ve been better staying in the US !

    • Not Long Now... says:

      Perhaps you have covid again?

    • Anna says:

I thought you only had to isolate if it’s confirmed as omicron (if vaxxed)?

    • James says:

Very odd as the UK government website is clear in stating “if someone has tested positive with a PCR test, they should not be tested using either PCR or lateral flow tests for 90 days, unless they develop new symptoms during this time”.

      • Tim says:

James, exactly! It’s almost as if they make it up as they go along…

      • blenz101 says:

That’s to stop you wasting NHS tests as you will already have antibodies and are “recovered”.

  • Michael C says:

My MUC-LHR for 16 Dec. has just been cancelled (not that we were going).
    MMB offers Avios/fee return.
Without wishing to be a greedy-guts, is there anything extra due because it falls within the 2 weeks’ notice period?!

    • Jonathan says:

      EU261

    • Lady London says:

Yes you get free rebooking rights to date of your choice if you want.

Clearly it’s a commercial cancellation but honestly…. let BA off on this one, it’s a short haul and you’re not stuck abroad so even I would suck this one up and choose refund or reroute (you don’t have to choose by the date of the flight so take your time).

      • meta says:

        You’re getting softer @LadyLondon 😀

@Michael C You’re due EU compensation 250 or 400 euros depending on the short-haul distance. BA seems to be offering these straight away. At least in my case in September it just involved sending a letter and they immediately paid up. They might argue omicron now, so you need to check what are the rules for entry to Germany to see if this has an effect. Otherwise refund/reroute always applies.

      • Michael C says:

I did think of the non-hassle/Xmas cheer route too, LL!

  • gordog01 says:

anyone know if BA are back up and working today for changing flights?

  • JM says:

Anyone used the Marriott £50 back from £200 spend amex offer? Offer terms ambiguous – says only valid at check out, but then also says, book, pay and stay and available online. Will this work on a nonrefundable member prepay rate?

    • ag says:

Yes should do if charged by hotel before 31/12

    • Tracy says:

I spent £200 cumulatively over 3 stays, one prepaid, two pay on checkout. I got the £50 back one day after the 3rd stay charge went from pending to confirmed….

    • Tariq says:

      It did for me.

  • adubya says:

Heading to Chicago next week, already ordered my test to return (Collinson ordered yesterday arrived today) but curious if anyone has used the free pcr/antigen tests available in the loop or river north? Claim to generate certificates suitable for international travel

    • Not Long Now... says:

The free pop up tents in NY produce an email with all the required details for use as “fit to fly”. Similar position for me, going to Florida at Christmas, but will probably take a remote test with me as not sure where exactly I’ll be 2 days before return, or indeed if the free options will still be available.
