The HfP chat thread – Tuesday 7th December

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Request: can we please get a “HSBC Premier Rewards” Payment cards category in the forum please since there’s one for “
    Barclays Avios Rewards” 🙂

  • chris1922 says:

No confirmation email received from forum as yet…. details are correct, as it now tells me that username and email address are already used. Not in spam/junk either…..

    • Rhys says:

Have resent your confirmation for you

      • chris1922 says:

        Ta, all sorted now 🙂

        • AJA says:

Except you need to complete your forum profile otherwise all your posts here just have the hfp logo and no name!

          • Jon says:

Looks like the display name for comments here is set to show first name rather than, er, display name from the forum user profile 😉 Hopefully an easy fix?

  • Tonyb says:

Morning, has anyone had any experience of being in New York with children since the US reopened? We are due to go at the end of next week and I have been looking to book a few things up restaurants, attractions etc they all stipulate over 12’s need to be double jabbed but my 12 and 16 year old are only single. My only worry aside from all the tests is that we wont actually be able to get in anywhere. Has anyone had any experience over there with kids yet?
    Many thanks

    • Mirp says:

NYC is adding a requirement for children under 12 to have 1 vaccine this week. How this will work I do not know. I took my unvaccinated child to NYC in August we ate outdoors so no requirements. I would not take my child with the current rules as it is too cold to be outside all the time.

    • jj says:

No experience with kids, but every place we have visited has required sight of our vaccine certifates this week. Most have also required ID and matched the two. Maak wearing is mandatory almost everywhere indoors, too.

  • Vasco says:

So, in addition to cancelling our cards, are Creation really not giving us the points we earned in the meantime? I’ve messaged them twice about it with no reply.

    • NorthernLass says:

You must be in the “living under a rock” collective. Probably best to scroll through the last few weeks chats if you have time. They are refusing to give anything at the moment, but have not yet supplied a reason.

      • ChasP says:

living in a cave would be kinder – shouldn’t really be suggesting users had just crawled out

        Rob’s Granny wouldn’t approve 🙂

  • Alex says:

Booked a rewards BA flight from London to Moscow for 10k Avios and 70 GBP in cash. Now I need to cancel and it only shows me the voucher option available. Am I right to assume I got a voucher for 70 GBP and Avios would be redeposited? I am still within 24 hours cancelation window.

    • Rhys says:

Give them a call and you can ask for a proper refund if still in cooling off period.

    • NorthernLass says:

You will only get a voucher if you cancel online, you currently need to call for any kind of refund.

      • Alex says:

thanks, done just that a got a full refund. Surprisingly short waiting time less than 15 minutes on the line, I expected worse.

  • Wollhouse says:

Whilst I’m happy to have forums, I really LIKE the chat thread. I have picked up loads of great tips that I didn’t know I was looking for! A forum, understandably, has many sub sections, many of which I wouldn’t naturally be inclined to dive into. If there was a topic that I didn’t want to read all the comments on the thread, I could simply skim past to the next gem. The knowledge available on the site is what keeps me coming back. So, I’m hopeful that the addition of a forum won’t kill the thread…. Rob??? Pretty please…

    • Rhys says:

If you use the ‘recent posts’ feature on the forums you should still get a fairly good overview of content across the forum.

The plan is to retire the chat threads eventually

    • Paul says:

      agree

    • Reney says:

agree. Whoever posted about mould magic a while back. Thank You so much!

      • Mike says:

Ditto – I bought mould magic too on the back of the recommendation- it really works

    • iamlost says:

I’ll miss these chat threads, they were the main reason I kept coming back to this site over the past year. Hoping the forum won’t feel more transactional in comparison.

    • Jill Kinkell says:

I really like the chat thread too. Lots of diverse info picked up. Took a look at all the forums. Don’t know that I could be bothered trawling through them

      • Rhys says:

That’s what the recent topics page is for 🙂

        • George says:

The downside to that is that people wouldn’t necessarily comment on something in passing as they do on the chat thread, unless the ‘recent topic’ is something that they specifically want to read and click on. With the chat thread you’re more likely to have comments from everyone. In get the benefits of a forum but in some ways it’s really good having everything in one thread like this. Just my opinion, not sure how it can be taken into account on a forum.

          • Rob says:

I see your point and it remains to be seen how we deal with it.

One option is to retire the chat thread here but have a daily chat thread in the forum section. If people just went back to putting random chat into the Bits articles because there was no chat thread of any sort, it would be a backwards step.

Clearly there is logic for both ways of doing it – having dedicated topic threads lets a question be debated over multiple days and easily found by future readers. Having an ‘all in one’ chat thread ensures that readers find stuff which they may otherwise miss in a forum if it was in a thread they didn’t normally bother looking at.

    • AndyW says:

Am I being dense? Was a forum announced, where is it?

    • Gary says:

Love the chat threads. Hope we can have both.

  • Stu N says:

London West End Hiltons – Waldorf and Doubletree West End are both approx same price for a Friday later this month, just need one night.

Any recent suggestions? Waldorf does seem v cheap given reputation I would associate with the brand….

    • blenz101 says:

If considering the Waldorf check with Emyr as well. For a one night stay the benefits can be excellent, free breakfast and dining credit alone could make it well worth your while even before upgrades and late checkout.

      • Stu N says:

Good shout re Emyr but its a heavily discounted sale rate so unlikely to be worth it.

    • SteveJ says:

The Waldorf is quite tired, hence losing the Estoria branding. No experience of the Doubletree.

    • Lyn says:

Stu, the Waldorf is called that for historical reasons. It is actually a Hilton, and nothing to do with the Waldorf brand.

Having stayed at both, albeit on points, I would suggest choosing whichever has the better location for whatever you plan to do while you are in London, unless of course having a pool is important. Hope you enjoy your stay.

    • Lyn says:

I tried a reply earlier but was still logged on from registering for the forum and it went to moderation so perhaps won’t post here. Now logged out.

The Waldorf Hilton is called that for historical reasons. It is actually a Hilton brand hotel, rather than a Waldorf brand, and it seems to get mixed reviews on here. Probably best to stay wherever gives you easier access to whatever you plan to do in London unless of course a swimming pool is important.

Just spent 20 mins on Amex chat about missing £5 Esso cashback. The end result is I need to ask again in 7-10 working days time once they’ve investigated why it didn’t credit automatically. Bit of a faff but I can do it in work time I suppose. Would be easier to just give me the £5

    • David says:

I’m still waiting for mine too. They’re also “investigating” why I didn’t get £4 cashback from Morrisons on 26th Oct.

    • Paasan69 says:

Received the same response for my missing “Marriott Bonvoy Luxury Hotels – Spend £400 or more, get £100 back” offer. Checked out of the Sheraton Skyline Heathrow on Nov 12th with a £423 spend. Apparently didn’t trigger due to the hotel using 3cPayment. Under investigation into the second week. And before anyone comments, this hotel is indeed on the list of “luxury” hotels participating.
