We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Hi all. Is there a way to check in ‘in absentia’ at a Hilton? It’s not for a tier point run, but simply as I need to go a day later now, and rebooking for one less night is now more expensive. Any option other than phoning and hoping? Is it something they’d even entertain?

    • Froggee says:

Id just phone the front desk on the day you’re due to check in and ask them to keep the reservation open as “something has come up”. Explain you’ll be arriving the next day and you’re happy to still pay for that night. It’s worked for me in the past when I’ve had issues with flights.

    • Gavin says:

A Hampton twice checked me in and out when I couldn’t make it – I got the points / nights – I didn’t actually contact them at all so they either must have done it automatically or more likely it’s a local practice (possibly incorrect)

    • QFFlyer says:

Yeah just call them – I had a three night booking at Hilton Stockholm, but my flight from Norway was canx and rescheduled for the following day – I was obviously past the free canx deadline, so just called to say not to forfeit the reservation and that I’d be checking in the next day due to a flight cancellation.

All went fine, still got three night credits/points (obviously had to pay for the three nights, as you’d expect).

I opened a Amex Business card for the 60,000 Avios. They have just come through on my Amex account. Do I have to wait for them to transfer over to BA before I can cancel the card (and receive the membership fee refund pro-rata)? Many thanks

    • Rob says:

Would seem an expensive risk to run ….

      • mhuk01 says:

i’ll wait a few weeks for them to transfer then 🙂 Whilst you’re there Rob… I have a 241 expiring April 2022 and want to extend it by booking a cheap 241 flight to then cancel and receive a voucher. How long do you think this option will be available for? Thanks

        • Rob says:

BA tried to remove it once but bottled it at the last minute (correctly, in retrospect). They won’t remove it at the moment, clearly, and you can see a scenario where it is lasts for another year or so.

          • mhuk01 says:

Ok makes sense. Presumably if they were to get rid of it, I’d be left with no choice but to make use of the 241 before April 2022 otherwise it would expire?..
