We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Getting really confused here: Can I organise a pre departure test from the States in the UK and take it with me (seeing as the company I bought tests from will not allow me to use theirs)

    • Pete M says:

Yes – Prenetics, Qured, Chronomics and many others…

    • Blenz101 says:

Yes. You just need to ensure they will issue you a certificate validating the results and showing the information on .gov.uk

NHS tests won’t do this but private providers will.

  • Roberto says:

Executive club seems to be down again!!!

  • VickyTM says:

Any suggestions please as to where I can get a fit to fly test for getting back to the UK from the USA in the LA / San Diego area? I think I can do a rapid antigen test, but I seem to only be able to find PCR tests that cost hundreds of Dollars… The rules changed on my flight out or else I’d have brought one with me….

    • ianM says:

LFT tests don’t seem to be any cheaper over in USA. I think PCR is more commonly used

      • Paul says:

i have a friend in New York who has just been to one of the many pop-up tented testing stations in Manhattan, and been tested and received email confirmation, containing all the information required on the gov.uk site. Total price, $0.00. What a rip off!

        • tonyb says:

Is your friend a US citizen ? I am hopefully going next week with my wife and kids so trying to work out my best testing options.

          • Paul says:

No, UK passport, just doing 4 days in NY… Plenty of pharmacies jumping on band waggon, people out on street touting for business, “only acceptable test”. Only $249 too!

    • Lyn says:

Vicky, a search for “free covid testing in San Diego” brought up this page. It is part of the official San Diego County web-site, so should be legitimate. I don’t know if it will be useful to you as a visitor, but perhaps it is worth trying. There are other pages about testing on their web-site also, but I didn’t want to include more than one link in this comment

UK Health Secretary Sajid Javid will give an “urgent update” on #Omicron this afternoon.

    • Anna says:

      🙄
What are the chances he’ll announce they’ve decided it’s of no more concern than any other variant and all restrictions will be dropped forthwith?

  • Anthony says:

A heads up for those who might be using prepaid rates for FHR hotels now, the terms and conditions on Amex travel (the booking site not your specific reservation) that are linked to from the booking page include a term that states if you cancel less than 7 days before arrival you can be charged a cancellation fee of 100% of the booking rate or more than 7 days out you could be charged a £20 cancellation fee. We cancelled a prepaid FHR booking a week or so ago for a future stay and got hit with a cancellation fee

  • Alex says:

Thinking of cancelling my Virgin Money / Virgin Atlantic card before my annual fee hits this month. How does VM treat future card signups? Do they allow another signup bonus after 6-12 months w/o the card, or is it once-per-lifetime bonus?

    • James says:

You can get a bonus every 6 months from the card been closed. Done it 3 times so far. Jan will be the fourth. Just leave it 6 months minimum between closing it and re-applying.

  • Bob says:

No more VS / ANA @rob?

  • Rob says:

Can you upgrade a BA avios booked Economy to Club Europe using cash?

    • Sam G says:

likely only at the airport if they are running a promo upgrade “AUP” You wouldn’t earn any Avios or TP.
