We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Anyone know an easy way of getting a chat (human) box up for o2?

    Hilton App Upgrades:

Staying at a Doubletree next week as a Diamond on a semi flex rate, upgraded one category in App shows this morning from Queen to King. This hotel only seems to have a few categories Queen / Twin / King / King deluxe so wasn’t expecting anything out of this world

    • Peggerz says:

Stayed at Hilton Glasgow this week as 💎. Upgraded on the app a day before arrival. Upgraded again on arrival.
The exec lounge is open and serves spirits Mon-Thu only, otherwise usual wine & beer offerings. Is this a local decision? I’ve had no spirits at Hilton T4 and doubles at Hilton Tower this year. A bit of a lottery getting a pre prandial G&T!

      • John says:

        How was the lounge food

        • Peggerz says:

Choice of meat platter (salami, 2 x pâté, Serrano ham, olives bread, halloumi), veggie platter (pakora, spring rolls, dips, bread, rocket, sun dried toms ) or sweet platter (didn’t see it).
Enough to be getting on with.
And haggis for breakfast (It was St.Andrews day after all).

          • John says:

Thanks sounds similar to before covid but they only let you have one plate?

          • Paul says:

The Hilton Glasgow has a superb breakfast offer and the Haggis is outstanding. There was usually a bottle of whiskey nearby to enhance the flavour

      • His Holyness says:

        There’s full drinks at T4

It’s a local decision, they can do as they please and face no come backs

  • T says:

    Hotel stay – 4 nights, 2 reservations (3+1 nights)

Do you think that the hotel (AC by Marriott) will ‘fuse’ the reservations together for me (so I don’t have to check in & out on the same day)? Should I tell them in advance or just upon the check in?

Originally, I was planning to stay at the hotel for 3 nights, but then I’ve changed my flights and booked another night. I was going to do one reservation but the prices went up (saving £75 this way).

I’ve stayed at this hotel several times and I’ve received suite upgrades at every occasion, hence I wonder what to do. Never had to deal with something like this before.

    • Tony1 says:

The IT system “should” fuse the bookings, but to be sure e mail the hotel and tell them.

    • Gavin says:

Their system will probably amalgamate your bookings and there’ll only be one bill on final checkout but you’ll probably need to get your key card updated each time. If your final checkout date is after a promotion ends you won’t get it.

This happened to me with Hilton and meant I missed out on double points as my checkout date was after that promotion had ended, I ended up with double nights which made it easier to retain diamond.

    • T says:

Okay, that’s great to know! Thanks guys

  • Gavin says:

I made two transactions at eligible restaurants for the Amex Platinum £200 credit offer. First one for ~£70 credited 2 days later. Second restaurant bill came to ~£140 so I was expecting the rest of the £200 offer to credit (£130 ish). Still waiting 2.5 weeks later. Is it actually OK to split the offer across two restaurants like this? Hoping I wasn’t supposed to do it all in one transaction…!

    • Craig says:

I split it and it worked fine, is the second restaurant still on the list? A few were removed.

      • Gavin says:

Thanks. Quite frustrating because I want to cancel the card soon, but have been told I may need to wait until the end of March for the credit to appear as per the terms!

        • Mr(s) Entitled says:

I was in the same boat. After 3wks it hadn’t posted so I got them to confirm that the offer had been activated and the spend was permissible. At which point I just get asking why they couldn’t fix it now until they did. Credit was manually applied there and then.

Which is handy, because I am cancelling today (subject to retention offer).

A lot of angry people on here at the moment but it’s now officially Christmas season so let’s all be happy!

What’s everyone’s favourite Xmas song? Mine is Last Christmas

    • Rachel Robinson says:

And of course it has additional poignancy now since George Michael died on Christmas day.

      • Anna says:

Pogues and Kirsty McColl – also poignant as she too died at Christmas.

    • Andy says:

Are there a lot fo angry people on here at the moment?!

      • Andy says:

I’m certainly angry now having seen your comment, you impostor!

      • Geoff 1977 says:

        There do seem to be.

Hopefully Christmas will cheer them up!

I hate January and February but Christmas makes winter bearable.

I like Shakin Stevens, here are the lyrics to sing along to.

      Snow is falling
      All around me
      Children playing
      Having fun

      It’s the season
      Love and understanding
      Merry Christmas everyone

      Time for parties and celebration
      People dancing all night long
      Time for presents
      And exchanging kisses
      Time for singing Christmas songs

We’re gonna have a party tonight
I’m gonna find that girl underneath the mistletoe
      We’ll kiss by candlelight

      Room is swaying, records playing
All the old songs, we love to hear
All I wish that everyday was Christmas
What a nice way to spend the year

We’re gonna have a party tonight
I’m gonna find that girl underneath the mistletoe
      We’ll kiss by candlelight

      Snow is falling
      All around me
      Children playing
      Having fun
      It’s the season
      Love and understanding
      Merry Christmas everyone
      Merry Christmas everyone
      Ooh Merry Christmas everyone

      Snow is falling
      All around me
      Children playing
      Having fun
      It’s the season
      Love and understanding
      Merry Christmas everyone

I like Band Aid do they know its Christmas, as it contains the line the clanging chimes of Doom, highly appropriate in these troubled times, and for all the know it alls and miserable gits on this board, myself chief amongst them.

I had the Nectar offer and my checkout showed that I was earning 3k points on a £60 purchase, thankfully took a screenshot of such, however I’ve only received 60 Nectar points as pending within the app and as showing within eBay nectar statement. Any idea how best to chase this up?

  • neuromancer says:

Right now, can you cancel award flights online and get the avios back, instead of a voucher?
And if I’ve paid taxes less than $35, do I have to pay the extra or they just do not return anything, as it was before?
    Thanks

    • Greg says:

I spoke to BA yesterday about this. I cancelled the return leg of 2 flights online and it asked me do you want a voucher. I said “No” thinking they would refund the Avios and my taxes. 2 minutes after clicking OK I got an email with details of my voucher.

They told me yesterday that to get a refund (of avios and taxes) will cost £35. Doesn’t make sense, but that’s what I was told.

    • Anna says:

You can only cancel online for a FTV – this has been the case for most of the pandemic and has everyone pretty hacked off with BA! If you want a refund you have to call, and you’re subject to the usual £35 pp charge, unless you have paid less than that. I think you just lose what you’ve paid in that case.

    • Toppcat says:

You can get a full refund (less £35 per ticket), but you have to call up to do it. Online you can only get a voucher.

    • Den S says:

I cancelled reward flights to Florida last week by phone at the end of last week. Got my miles straight back but only had to wait 3-4 days for the credit to go back on my Amex (less £35 per adult)

  • Jon says:

Apologies if old news – looks like Hotels.com free nights have been extended again, to June 2022 – pleasant surprise when I checked my account just now expecting end of this month.
