We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

    Afternoon all!

Has anyone travelled to Hawaii recently and has an experience of going through Hawaii Safe process since it started recognising international vaccine certificates?

If it helps with details, we have a 4 days stopover in LA before going to Oahu for New Year.

    Thanks!

    P

    • Maciek says:

Sadly if you arrive in HI from the mainland, you are considered a domestic arrival and the old rules apply (i.e. you need a test unless you have a CDC card).

      • Patrycja says:

        Really?! That sucks

        • DanDanNoods says:

The wording on the Safe Travel website is really vague and confusing. Maciek is definitely right that you are considered domestic and the wording indicates you’d need a CDC card or a test, but dig a little deeper and it seems like that is not the case. I’ve been doing some research this afternoon and I’ve come to the conclusion that you are going to be fine if you’re vaccinated, provided you fill out the Safe Travels website.

https://ets.hawaii.gov/travelhelp/ paragraph 5 about domestic or non-direct international passengers indicates as such.

So does the FAQ here: https://hawaiicovid19.com/travel/faqs/
Under the heading “Vaccination exception program questions for domestic travellers from the united states or it’s territories”, 3rd question, point 4/5.

I’m heading to Hawaii next weekend after laying over in San Francisco starting Saturday this week; I’m not planning on doing any covid tests in SF.

          • Patrycja says:

I just emailed safe travel support with a screenshot of my Scottish certificate (without personal details) to get a confirmation. They stopped short from confirming that the certificate will be accepted but came back and said that as long as it is an official document with correct name, date of birth, vaccine type, date of vaccination and vaccination location in any country, those can be used to skip quarantine.

Will you report back on your experience in SF before boarding for Hawaii? It would be great to get real life experience

        • bafan says:

And it can’t just be any test, they have a list of providers they accept and that’s it.

      • H says:

International vaccines are recognised by Hawaii, not just the CDC card.

  • Will says:

Geneva airport arrivals to get vehicles to France etc now being clarified. Looks like will be exempt from quarantine after all of non stop and less than 24 hrs in CH. Sadly too late for the Manchester flight yesterday when some were sent back home having been refused entry

    • Dave says:

Rwally? can’t see anything apaert from transiting airside being okay…have you got a link to something saying if you arrive into geneva and want to go straight to France that’s fine?

  • Neil says:

Does anyone know if the new entry rules in Japan mean that international transit through Haneda is affected please?

    • Clive says:

The measures listed above do not apply to passengers who are transiting through one Japanese airport and do not go through immigration. If you are transiting using different airports you will need a transit permit on arrival.

To get one you will be required to demonstrate that you have not come from a country on the banned list, that you have timely onward travel plans, and that you will not use public transport to move between airports; this includes taxis.

You should comply with any additional screening measures put in place by the authorities. You should also check the latest entry requirements for your destination.

Sat in HND ANA Suite Lounge as I type this… No changes, smooth transit.

  • Jody says:

Finally got my Amazon £20 credit banner appear after removing all my cards and sticking a visa card on there on Saturday. Cheers for the tip on doing this.

    • MinR says:

Do you have to place an order after you’ve removed all cards and only added a VISA credit card?

      • Jody says:

I did place an order with my visa card, I don’t know if you actually have to or not. Pretty sure in the chat yesterday there were people that said they didn’t. I needed something anyway, so thought I may as well.

    • Richie says:

Did you buy anything with the visa card following your changes?

      • Allan says:

I can confirm no order is required. Tried on 2 accounts – one with purchase and one without, both got offer after 48 hours.

    • Graham Walsh says:

Got mine today as well. Added my IHG card for a laugh and was credited.

    • Amy C says:

Miffed, it’s been four days and still haven’t got one!

      • Jody says:

Seems to be different amounts of time for people. I did mine Saturday, and have been checking each day since then. Banner turned up today.

      • Gavin says:

Bizarre that mine was instant after buying something and some seem to have been waiting weeks

  • John says:

ROI requiring pre-departure tests, including from GB, eg Heathrow.

(Flying, sailing to Belfast then crossing border hoping not to encounter Garda Immigration Bureau not good idea)

    • James says:

Would they really have anything that appears remotely like a border checkpoint coming from Northern Ireland?

      • John says:

Regularly board coaches and trains around Dundalk, with steady flow of irregular migrants deported back to Northern Ireland. Road checkpoints less often.

  • Ed says:

Trying to cancel BA Amex, agent says I’ll need a BA card to redeem companion vouchers. Am I right in thinking this is incorrect, and I can use any amex? (I have a biz platinum)

  • Yorkieflyer says:

    No and Yes

  • xcalx says:

Does the LHR-BGI flight at 1035 have a regular gate number, trying to figure which lounge to visit. Thanks

    • Rob says:

Our was off a ‘C’ gate three weeks ago.

Ask at check-in. The check-in staff always know. It doesn’t show on the display boards due to an alleged deal with Heathrow to keep people in the main area (ie in the shops) for as long as possible.

    • davefl says:

You can use the Flightaware app to see which gates it usually lands/takes off from.

I did that with the Finnair MAN-HEL last week and was at the gate about an hour before everyone else. Was very peaceful until the gate was formally called. Taking a chance of course but flightware tracked it landing and arriving at the gate.

      • manilabay says:

I would recommend heading to the B gate lounge – a lot quieter and service was okay when I visited a few weeks back.

      • Anna says:

If you just google the flight number you’ll get a result showing which gate it left from the day before, do it over a few days and you can tell if there’s a pattern. Long haul tend to be B or C though IME.

    • TGLoyalty says:

There’s a high chance it’ll be B or C so just go to T5B lounge?

      The lounge “dragons” always know.
