We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

I know some people have mentioned travel to Isle of Man recently. From 4am on Tuesday, everyone travelling there from the CTA (England, Scotland, Wales, NI, Channel Islands and Ireland) must take a LF test within 12 hours of arrival into the Isle of Man and report the result to them (how this is being done isn’t clear yet).

Bit strange as I’d have thought they’d have wanted people to test before they went to the island rather than once they’d arrived.

If you’re travelling there from anywhere outside the CTA then you have to take a PCR test instead of the LF.

    • Tracey says:

Bit strange that England also want people to test once they arrive rather than before they get on the plane!

    • Michael C says:

Just to add the PCR must be done at an official government site, and total isolated until result comes: no food shopping, etc.
Also, IOM does not recognise Sinovac; anyone who’s had it is considered unvaccinated and must isolate for 7 days.

Another Sainsbury’s online shop fail when it comes to their buy 6 get 25% offbooze offer.

Second time in a month when the champers I ordered for delivery today is “out of stock”

Too much of a coincidence in my book.

    • John says:

Tesco delivery man brought me 2 bananas once. He was embarrassed. Rest of my £50 order was out of stock (all supposedly heavily discounted)

      • Anna says:

At least they couldn’t pack the other items on top of the bananas and squash them which is Morrisons’ favourite trick round here!

      • Cats are best says:

A couple of months ago I ordered bubbly from Waitrose, only thing on the order.

It was out of stock, a perplexed driver turned up to deliver an order of no items.

    • BuildBackBetter says:

Sainsburys delivery is often out of stock.

      • Mark says:

I have a complaint going through with Sainsbury’s at the moment. Spent ages selecting the offers I wanted from a shop a week ago, then notice the discounts were no longer applied. Seemed to be flipping between two different sets of offers, and in the end was charged full price for items that should have had discounts totalling £25 even though I have screenshots showing the discounts.

    • Phil W says:

Had my Sainsbury’s 6 bottles of Champagne arrive at my mum’s last night. Order was complete with no substitutes. Just need to hope some bottles survive until we get there in 3 weeks.

      • Polly says:

They substituted our x 6 bottles of champers with a far superior one, think it ended up being £30 down to about £7/bottle. Mad.

    • Lady London says:

I think what the supermarkets get wrong is they force your order to be filled only by the physical branch that is ‘allocated’ going by your postcode.

Many of us go further afield to better branches with better choice of stock when physically shopping.

For some stupid reason the supermarkets generally don’t give the option to fulfill from a better stocked branch or warehouse. Hence if you’re stuck being allocated to a poor branch with poor assortment of stock available not worth ordering.

Supermarkets need to lift this kind of bricks and mortar way of thinking.

      • davefl says:

Even worse for sainsburys to my address – I get the delivery from one of four branches and don’t know until day of order which one it’ll be when the nectar app tells me where it was picked.
They all have very different ranges due to the local ethnic population in the store catchment areas.

      • bill says:

i think Tesco has dark supermarkets that fulfil home delivery for certain postcodes i.e. basically a warehouse with no public acess

    • Nick says:

Had 36 bottles delivered daily for 3 days last week with no issues.

  • Zed says:

If I arrive into UK on say Monday 11.40am and fly out Wednesday 7am, so less than 48 hours, is a PCR on arrival at the airport enough?

    • John says:

Need to book and pay but don’t need to do the test. However you must self-isolate except for travelling directly between airport and your accommodation, unless you do take the test and it comes back negative

      • Babyg says:

are you 100% sure, there is/was a box for transit on the PLF.. cant remember if it said 24/24 hours thou?

  • Marie says:

Seek advice from the well travelled please . Have BAPP business seats on BA a350 later this week if all goes well. They have seated us in the “little compartment ” of 12 .There are seats available in the main business cabin to switch. Are these seats ok? This is a our long awaited much delayed luxury trip .

    • Andrew says:

All seats are created equal on the A350 – aren’t really any bad seats. Hope your trip gets to go ahead despite all the uncertainty this week.

    • Babyg says:

I flew the mini cabin based on the “mini cabin hype” – eg quieter, feels more exclusive. But it felt like the cabin was forgotten about at times, being that far down the back of the plane means youre less likely to get your first choice, youre drinks etc come last – maybe this has changed as we flew a while ago. As an aside, as a couple/family we always sit on one side of the plane, we dont use the middle seats as the ability to talk to one another via the little hatch is useless.. and to visit each other you need to walk around the plane.

  • Bill says:

I didn’t take an easyJet flight on Saturday so yesterday I requested a refund of APD. Yesterday evening easyJet duly obliged and refunded not only the APD of Saturday’s flight but also a forthcoming flight on the same reference. This was despite my email asking for a refund of Saturday’s sector. I called the call centre yesterday evening within minutes of finding out their error, and I’m now panicking and waiting for them to reinstate my flight next week. This might take a few days. In the meantime I have to hope the flight doesn’t sell out. There’s 6 seats left and one one flight per day. Lesson for the future is only ask for the APD refund after all sectors have been flown

    • BuildBackBetter says:

Isn’t the whole ticket cancelled if you no-show for one leg?

    • davefl says:

I had exactly the same thing happen with Easyjet.
Ultimately they didnt reinstate the second flight (which I wanted to change for free under their policy) they ended up just refunding the money and somehow gave me back more than I’d paid.
This was all via the twitter team who took a couple of days to respond each time

      • bill says:

        This is not reassuring !

        • bill says:

I’ve received a call from easyjet apologising for their error and they have reinstated the flight on the 12/12/21. Very happy and relieved

  • Ant says:

We arrive Sunday night at Stansted. The testing centres will be closed. Where can we get a PCR test with a quick turnaround?
We also still have a couple of Expert Medicals that we didn’t use last time. Can we use these? Has anyone used them recently?

    • Stu says:

We had leftovers from a previous trip when we’d booked Day 2/8 tests and then only needed day 2. The company told us we could use the leftover tests for a future trip as they refused to refund us when the government changed the rules.

Question about Hilton vs IHG points which reads like a ‘GCSE-style’ problem-solving question…

I am Hilton Diamond and require 3 more nights this year to hit a 10,000 milestone bonus. I have enough trips planned to hit this required number of nights.

Is it better for me to switch my stays to Crowne Plaza in light of the 5x offer?

Struggling to get my head round the points conundrum!

    • Green Plastic says:

For the purpose of the question please assume that the hotels in question will all be of a similar costs, circa 100 per night. So no savings to be made on a direct spend level.

    • VerdantBacon says:

Just compare the 5x bonus to 10,000, assuming all else equal. You’d get around 13k IHG bonus points vs 10k HH points so it’s really down to preference.

If you aren’t also IHG Spire (dunno why you’d consider this problem if you aren’t), then you’d be close to losing out due to the HH diamond bonus points

    • Anastasia Beaverhausen says:

Assuming 3 stays at £100 that’s around 17-18k IHG points. More if you have status.
      Assuming value of 0.4p that’s about £70.
      10k Hilton points assuming 0.3p is £30.
3 x £100 stay at Hilton is about 3.5k base points (10 per $ like IHG).
With 100% Diamond bonus that’s about £20 of points, plus the previous £30. Plus a bit more for MyWay bonus points depending where you stay. Stay at Hilton that’s another £9.

£59 vs £70 (more if you have status). I’d choose based on 1)where do you want to stay 2)do you have a useful points balance at IHG or would it be better to build your Hilton pot 3) do you care about the free breakfast you’ll get at Hilton but not at IHG

Anyone else had a delay in the monthly transfer of Avios from BA Amex to Exec club accounts? Mine normally drops off my Amex balance one day and appears in BAEC the next day but this month, Avios left my Amex account last Tuesday and still not showing in my BAEC balance …

Looks like they broke many things when they took the system down for 4 days!
