We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

    Question about travel insurance:
We have FlexPlus travel insurance and upon reading details found this:
    You are covered for
We will pay up to £5,000 for each insured person for their portion of the trip costs if you have to cancel your trip, including:

    • The value of used points or miles if you booked your flight or accommodation using Avios or a similar promotional scheme.

Anyone know how they value points? I have a 6 night stay at St Regis over Christmas, cost me 590k Marriott points and has passed the free cancellation date, cash price for same room would be over £35k. Thanks!

    • Anastasia Beaverhausen says:

Just guessing but probably based on the price to buy those points or miles.

    • will says:

You’d lose the points, so logically it’s the replacement cost of them.
What you also want to make sure is that there isn’t some sort of no show cash charge which IHG often threaten.

Easiest solution of all if you have a good reason for cancelling is to phone marriott/hotel and explain and see what they will do for you.

    • JDB says:

Obviously, the reason for cancelling also needs to be an insurable event (and Nationwide has limited these, although still generous vs. most) under the policy which may depend on when you booked.

    • Phil says:

Have a check of the cancellation terms to double check what they’re actually going to assess. The terms on my St Regis redemption, sent in their “ We look forward to welcoming you” email, is:

“In the event that you cancel or shorten your reservation fewer than seven days before your scheduled arrival date or if you do not arrive for your reservation, a one-night cancellation fee equal to $XXXX will be assessed to the credit card used when booking.”

The fee was lower than a one night room rate when I booked.

  • Colin MacKinnon says:

Thanks to whoever mentioned the Swiss £1k deal in business from London to Dubai.

Booked LHR-ZRH-DBX and back DBX-FRA-EDI for £1004 – daytime flight out, 90 min tranfser bother ways.

So that’s my belated 60th booked for belated Expo 2020 !

Now, best hotels for a few days at Expo – plus a few days at the beach, checking the hyper-extravagant sights of Dubai and maybe a day or two in the desert?

How are the Creation account write offs going?
At the moment I have only 50p outstanding on my account, is it worth adding to it in the hope of a write off.

    • Andrew says:

It’s all down to your risk appetite.

Could you afford to repay next year’s Council Tax and a few £1,000 in utility prepayments on demand if they weren’t written off?

      • Alan says:

Yes but I was thinking of a couple of hundred, as per a couple of posts from people saying their accounts had be closed and the balances written off, not thousands.

    • Jonathan says:

I put about £9k on mine over the past 6 weeks and nothings been written off unfortunately.

    • SteveJ says:

I was planning on the opposite, leave a credit balance so they have the hassle of having to cut me a cheque.

      • Roy says:

Maybe they’ll just write that off, too 🙂

      • Harrier25 says:

A cheque? This isn’t 1982 SteveJ. In 2021 they’re more likely going to email you requesting account details to transfer the funds back to you.

        • stevenhp1987 says:

If you overpay by card, my guess is they’ll just refund it to the card…

Overpay by bank transfer… I’d be willing to bet they’ll pay by Cheque.

I’ve had 2 cheques this year when a bank transfer would have been quicker, cheaper & easier.

        • SteveJ says:

I doubt they’re capable of generating a secure way for me to send them my bank details, so I’ll just take a cheque ☺️

        • TGLoyalty says:

Amex still send cheques for refunds.

          • QFFlyer says:

I’ve never had a cheque from Amex, bank transfer every single time

          • TGLoyalty says:

If you like to pay vi debit card rather than DD or if you ask they’ll send a cheque.

      • Ming the Merciless says:

        I’ve done this already-
Had to provide proof of paying creation from my bank account to them in excess of the amount being refunded. Since I had only sent £100 to them from my bank this wasn’t possible so they reversed a credit card payment payment instead.
