The rumours were correct. IHG Rewards is running a huge ‘5x’ bonus promotion today and tomorrow.

The rules have been published here (click here).

Full details of the offer, and registration, are on this page here.

Anyone who is registered for IHG’s current ‘3x’ Autumn offer – you can register now via this link – is automatically opted in.

IHG Rewards 5x

You will receive 5x base points for all IHG stays booked on Monday and Tuesday.

Stays must be completed by 31st December.

You will need to have registered via the link here before booking.

The number of bonus points you can earn is capped at 70,000. This includes bonus points earned during the current ‘3x’ promotion.

70,000 isn’t that much. You will be earning a bonus 40 points per $1 under this offer, so you will hit the cap if you book more than $1,750 of stays pre-tax.

How valuable is this offer?

Very valuable.

Let’s assume that an IHG Rewards point is worth 0.4p (which we usually say it is) and that you have Spire Elite status and earn a 100% elite bonus.

  • You spend £100 in a UK hotel …..
  • …. which is £88.89 before VAT
  • …. which is equivalent to $118.48
  • You earn 10 base points per $1 at most brands, x5 as part of this offer, plus a 100% Spire Elite bonus on top
  • You therefore receive 60 points per $1
  • You receive 7,108 points for your stay ($118.48 x 60)
  • At 0.4p, the points are worth £28.43
  • You receive points worth 28.4% of the post-tax amount you paid

Conclusion

This is a very generous offer, and it may be worth rebooking any stays you have coming up if the price hasn’t moved.

Details of the offer are available via this page of the IHG site by the time you read this.

Just checked the two bookings I have remaining (or haven’t cancelled yet!) for this year.

    1. Manchester for this weekend – no rooms available at the HI so rebooking not possible. Other hotels have ridiculous rates for one night that are more than the total of the 3 night booking I made in May. CP for the weekend would be £738. I paid £ 250.

    2. Amsterdam De Witt for long weekend before Christmas. BAR ranges € 30 – € 45 more per night than my existing booking.

So if it works for your stays then go for it. But do the maths before cancelling.

Now if this offer was 5x for the entirety of the cash rate sale (stay unto 3 Sept 2022j then that would have been HUGE but it’s not so it’s a MEH from me.

    • Stef says:

My thoughts exactly. To have to stay by end Dec is very restrictive and hotels I have booked not worth it as rates increased more than value of 5x offer, incl Spire bonus. IHG almost had a good promotion.

  • Duncan Stevenson-Price says:

Based on the calculations above, I assume it doesn’t stack with the 3x offer? So if you have a stay that is already eligible for 3x, cancelling and rebooking will only net you the extra 2x base points?

    • Andrew says:

This is where I’m at too – I’m up to x3 on all future stays under the general offer so this offer is less of a lure, giving me x2 base more than I’d get anyway. Now if it was x8, by stacking, then it’s a different story.

    • ChrisC says:

The first stay would have been the qualifying stay and I would have gotten 2x for the second. (Would have been different if stays in November hadn’t been cancelled …)

A quick check and even earning 5x on both stays is very poor value taking into account the cost increases.

As I said it may work for other people just not for me but best to do the calculations before doing anything.

      • Duncan Stevenson-Price says:

Apologies Chris, I wasn’t referring to your calculations which I’m sure are correct, but Rob’s calculations in the article which didn’t suggest any stacking.

Definitely a lot of price increases at the moment. Some sale!

  • Matt says:

“ you will receive 5x base points for all IHG Rewards stays booked on Monday and Tuesday.” I assume that’s incorrect you don’t earn points on reward stays?

  • Andrew says:

    There’s another off too:

Our best Points & Cash offer yet.
Book by December 6, 2021 and stay between December 27, 2021 and February 28, 2022 and save 25%.

This works out as 20k points for £85 if you book and then subsequently need to cancel….

    • Ken says:

      Hardly worth a carrot.

If there’s not an offer selling them for less than 0.4p at the moment then there will be soon.

  • Anna says:

Sadly my Edinburgh stay (2 rooms for 3 nights) is now nearly twice as much as when I booked (though who knows if it will happen now?!!), but I’m going to book a North East plan B today.

  • DJ says:

Does it work for ambassador 2 for 1 weekend stay bookings?

    • Rob says:

      Should do, yes.

      • numpty says:

As in the weekend voucher? points only for the Monday night stay?

        • Rob says:

The rules with the AMB vouchers is that the first paid night is treated as a standard paid night and night two is free. You should therefore get the bonus on the first night.

Whilst we’re at it, the rule is also that you get 1 elite night credit towards status and not two.

Starting to get a little frustrated with IHG….usually stay around the LHR area for work. Had bookings for Crowne Plaza T4 (lovely hotel) and stayed there a few times since it’s reopened. New staff and manager Shaun all lovely and making a real effort. So disappointed that’s it’s closed again for hotel quarantine!!!!! They’ve cancelled all my bookings….
Holiday Inn M4 J4 cancelled all my bookings as it’s become an asylum hotel just like the Crowne Plaza Stockley Rd……
Just leaves Staybridge/Holiday Inn. Stayed there since reopening and have future bookings. Will double check offer to see if 5x is worth it. Again, staff lovely (not met manager since Mark left) and the ones that made it through covid and didn’t lose their jobs remembered me from staying there before it closed for Hotel quarantine…. however, looking at future bookings, it’s become expensive…..so running out of IHG options sadly.
Indeed it’s time to probably cancel the bookings and switch to Marriott – done some bookings for Renaissance. Great value at the moment.

  • Andrew says:

Presumably booking today, through my usual corporate travel agent would also trigger this offer?
