We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Virgin flying club points booking…..any issues with booking for a family member from my account? It lets you input the name of someone else on the booking online, but just wanted to know peoples experience.

News title: Omicron variant may be ‘very positive’ news for the world if new Covid mutation kills off more lethal Delta coronavirus

Could there be a silver lining in the cloud?

    • BuildBackBetter says:

Previous variants had same attributes I think.

    • TGLoyalty says:

Isn’t the point they have no idea what they are dealing with and just continuing with the usual #scariants evade the vaccines stuff.

First it was Alpha, the Beta then Delta and the vaccine does just fine stopping severe disease in the vast majority of vaccinated people.

      • Degsy says:

Clearly incidental to the bigger story but anyone know why they jumped to omicron rather than calling it epsilon?

        • TGLoyalty says:

That had already been used for the California one which is no longer of interest. As have many of the letters I think only lambda and Mu are “still of interest”

Skipped Nu because people would think it was “New” and Xi due to Chinese president.

          • Harrier25 says:

…. and the Chinese President is much more dangerous to the world than any covid variant could even dream of being.

Because someone was watching Futurama at the time of naming?

(Yes showing both age and geekiness)

  • C says:

Not sure if this had already been mentioned, but I checked today and my recently issued companion voucher now has the correct expiry date of May 2024

Does anyone know if Flying Blue elites get free seat selection on VS’s economy basic fares?

    • bafan says:

Can’t speak for Flying Blue but I’m a Delta Skymiles elite and I get free seat selection on the basic fares on VS.

Took advantage of the IHG stay twice and get a free night promotion for new members. Booked online with ihg and stayed at HI Express T4 two weeks ago and points not posted… looked at last reservations and it’s disappeared completely and the missing points claim form says invalid reservation no when I try to claim. To be fair the hotel couldn’t take card payment using the chip and pin machine and instead had to send an email payment link, so assume something went wrong here unlinking my ihg account. Anyone else had an issue like this before? Emailed hotel but no reply… or is it something to take up centrally?

    • OP says:

It will be up to the hotel to register your stay correctly on IHG’s system (or agree with customer services when they contact the hotel on your behalf if you choose to take it up that way) but IHG’s system links to their POS machines by default. I would attempt to call the hotel and speak to a manager who should sort it.

When I had a payment issue (Hotel Indigo Birmingham had new payment machines that didn’t take Amex (!) and I refused to budge on principle that they needed to sort out Amex payment, and my employer was paying so was using a corporate card) they resolved the IHG stay credit a few weeks later when they finally took my Amex payment over the phone. The manager explained how it worked in their system (it all being linked to payment) and they had kept my stay ‘open’ until payment was confirmed, eventually then awarding me 15 night credits…

Looking at flying to Cambodia next weekend before borders potentially close everywhere!

Guidance for the pre flight PCR test says:

“a certificate of negative COVID-19 (PCR) within 72 hours of arrival in Cambodia, from a competent health authority stating you do not have COVID-19. This certificate should bear the stamp of the facility issuing it and be signed by a qualified medical practitioner to certify the test result.“

Do collinson have a stamp and signature? I haven’t had to get a pre flight test before so not sure what they are asking for is standard or not…

    • paulm says:

Yes their certs do have this. Shows name, title, signature and address stamp.

    • Vit says:

Andy, can you share the link to which you are seeing this please? I am flying in on the 9th after one night at Novotel Suvarbhumi (test & go) and will be using the test & go results to fly into Cambodia the next day.

  • Niall says:

I saw people mention points being slow to move from Amex to BA since the IT update, but have people seen slow crediting for flights too? Flights usually credit within a couple of days for me, but nothing after a week for me.

    • Alex says:

I had the same problem. Did a missing avios claim by inputting e-ticket no and threw up error but avios and TP automatically appeared there and then, so worth a try!

  • Dave says:

Hi folks. Can anyone remind me if hotels acknowledge status and give points on FHR bookings (a Conrad Hilton)? I believe they do when booked via Impressario/Emyr but the 4pm is important on this occasion. Is that also the case with FHR? Thanks in advance

    • TGLoyalty says:

Yes 100% when paid at property.

The pre pay option may not (I’ve heard they do for Hyatt)

      • Dave says:

Ah – that’s a helpful steer thanks. I was wondering about paying up front too to get the £100 Amex travel cash back, but the loss of points would pretty much negate the saving on a £1.5k booking …

        • Andrew says:

I thought the Amex £100 offer had expired?

          • Andrew says:

I stand corrected – it’s been extended until tomorrow (originally expired last Sunday).

          • Yorkieflyer says:

I’ve looked at our future travels and can’t find any hotel, flight or car hire that saves cash booking with the Amex offer
