We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

anyone come across some decent deals for US car hire today? looking for February, April and July at the moment.

    • Fandango says:

      Try Enterprise, Alamo or Fox

    • Magic Mike says:

Good luck, prices are mental. Try all the usual aggregators: holiday autos, rentalcars.com, Expedia, BA Car Hire, plus every discount code you can find on the companies website themselves. Avoid airport pickups to reduce taxes (you can often pick up from downtown and return to the airport in the same city without a one way fee)

    • Paul Pogba says:

Try the Aussie version of your favourite rental company or Qantas if you’re picking up from an airport: https://www.qantas.com/au/en/book-a-trip/cars.html

    • d4ve says:

Has anyone tried Truro? Is the insurance the equivalent of U.K. fully comp?

  • mr_jetlag says:

evening all from Asia – what’s the current consensus on cheapest day 2 LF test provider?

  • MATTY says:

Just had a call with Amex Call Centre. I hit my 3k Gold Rewards card target in September. I had last held this card 25 months before so waited for 2 year gap.
However I have been told that the bonus will not be paid as I was also holding a BA Amex card at the time .
Back office confirmed to Agent that you need to be 2 years clear of holding any Amex card to recieve bonus on this card .
    Offered 4k points
Can somebody confirm if this is indeed the case and I should accept or challenge this?
    Thanks

    • Rob says:

      This is correct.

      • Bob says:

Does it work the other way round apply for a gold having been clear for 2yrs+ and get the bonus then apply for the BA card a couple of months later I’m sure that happened with my wife’s cards this year or was she lucky

        • Anna says:

Yes, as per Rob’s strategy, there’s an article on here about how to do it.

        • Jonathan says:

You have to be clear of any Amex cards where you’re the main cardholder (unless you’re going for the Platinum / BAPP bonuses, for Platinum you can’t have had any personal MR earning card within 24 months, for BAPP you can’t have had BAPP / BA Blue card within the last 24 months.

So consider yourself lucky you were offered a bonus in the first place !

    • Anna says:

4k points is a good outcome! As Rob says, Amex are correct, it’s only the Platinum MR card you would have been eligible for a SUB on.

    • TGLoyalty says:

      Unfortunately, you’ve messed this up

You need to be 2 years clear of holding ANY personal Amex

You would’ve been eligible for the platinum sub

You’re also eligible for the BAPP sign up bonus if you leave a two gap between holding any BA card.

    • Harry T says:

Please challenge this for our amusement.

  • Chris says:

9000 avios for referral via BAPP hit the account straight away? I’ve been waiting for quite some time now

  • Lady London says:

OT 1-day offer today just sent out by Premier Inn. Hypnos mattresses and bedding packs. Better than many. Am not up to date on prices but at a quick glance these look OK for Hypnos. Delivery and installation included.

1 day only and that’s today.

  • Den S says:

Looks like BA are working on the Household accounts again, I cannot access my wife’s or mine! Earlier today I could!

  • James says:

Hi, quick question regarding the HSBC Premier Credit Card extended warranty if I may. Does anyone know if the full value of the payment needs to be made using the card for the extended warranty policy to be issued? The policy says they won’t pay out “Any claim for equipment which was not purchased using your qualifying HSBC credit card.” Reason for asking is I have a gift card I’d like to use as part payment but don’t want to do so if I can’t get the cover as a result. Have been on hold with D&G helpline for 20 minutes as of now….

  • FatherOfFour says:

Was thinking of using the Amex 10% off Samsung (over £500) offer from my card- however I’ve just noticed it’s valid in stores only. Never visited a Samsung store, will the prices be the same as they are online? Discount would be about £70 (less my travel abd time costs), but would then no longer stack with the BA shopping portal deal worth about 2800 Avios (or £28 as I value them). Why are Samsung trying to drive people into their retail stores?

    • ChrisC says:

Easier to try and upsell if you are physically there?

    • Anuj says:

Prices should be the same but offers on top may not be. Unlike apple the Samsung stores are run as a concession by someone else. However this does mean you can haggle at a store and get some accessories thrown in or something.

      • FatherOfFour says:

Thanks for the insights. I suppose ChrisC’s comment about upselling can work the other way with haggling, but that’s not my strong point!
