We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

I have a BA flight to cancel that was UUA. I’ve read the various instructions but I’m not sure how it works.
Is there any way to get the avios back in to my account? Or do I have to take an evoucher that has cash and avios wrapped up in one?
Or do the avios get converted in to cash (and at what price) and sent as an evoucher with original cash fare?

It’s a flight to SIN that I booked in a sale so was pretty cheap if that makes much diff.

    Thanks!

    • AJA says:

If your underlying fare allows you can cancel for a full refund less any cancellation fees. But you can only do it on the phone.

If you want to exchange it for a FTV ie no fees payable then I believe you get nothing back and everything is held in suspension. I am not sure you can unwind the UUA first.

      • Tom1 says:

Ok thanks. I’ll read the ticket while I get in the queue.

      • ChrisC says:

Yes you can unwind the UUA and then have a voucher for the original cash ticket

Need to call though and tell the agent to do it in that order otherwise it all might end up in the FTV.

        • AJA says:

Thanks for confirming that Chris. Just realised my post is missing some words from my last sentence. I meant to say “I am not sure but I think you can unwind the UUA first”

  • Mikeact says:

Who on earth pays cash to pay off their Amex bill each month….now they’ve withdrawn the facility ?

    • Mjshort says:

How do you pay an amex bill with cash?

      • Will says:

At a Amex branch? Think there is one in the City, certainly used to be. The answer to your question is probably almost nobody (and perhaps was only those operating ‘cash businesses’ , hence stopping the option 🙂

      • Harrier25 says:

        What’s cash?

    • N says:

      I do.

      Irritating email.

    • Mikeact says:

‘Starting January 2022, we will be phasing out cash payments and removing the Giro paying-in slip for all American Express® Card statements. This is part of our ongoing commitment to protect the security of your Account.’

      • Harley says:

Havent got email but i do. Most bank branches accepted and used to withdraw cash from tesco debit hence getting clubcard points in process ( obviously stopped too)

  • rams1981 says:

South Africa going red supposedly. Don’t book trips there

    • Babyg says:

alternatively book hoping they will cancel and then you have yourself a “golden ticket”.. eg one that can be moved to any date in the future… i did this with a couple trips in the last 18months to great affect… that said it was almost guaranteed they were going to cancel.. now not so much

    • TPGreen says:

Based on what source? I saw the news of the potential new variant that’s seems to have come out of Botswana/SA but not seen much else around possible travel restrictions. They seem inevitable though if the variant remains a concern.

    • Tracey says:

      Just booked Mauritius:(

    • Mondegreen says:

South Africa going red? “It’s really important that there are no knee-jerk responses here, especially with relation to South Africa,” Dr. Mike Ryan

  • AlanC says:

Expiring Flying Blue points. Rob suggested topping up to 40k then move to Accor. I have the accounts linked but I cant find a page to transfer across. Is it on the desktop site as I’m using the AF/KLM app? Thanks

    • Guernsey Globetrotter says:

Yes – on the desktop site you can find a ‘Start Converting’ button next to the Miles+Points heading as you scroll down the page: https://www.flyingblue.nl/en/dashboard
Not sure if you can do it from the app (as I never have done) but if your accounts have already been linked the transfer is almost instantaneous in my experience…

  • Doommonger says:

In a similar vein is it possible to move Virgin points to AF/KLM?

    Doomey.

  • Mark M says:

Has anyone had any success claiming compensation or refunds from Creation Re: their abrupt cancellation of IHG cards?
I requested, and have just received by post, a full account data pack, but nothing more re my complaint. Is that par for the course?

    • Harrier25 says:

Yep, until after the big day….Friday 3rd December. Not long to wait now!

    • Chrisasaurus says:

They emailed this morning saying the fee was being refunded.

      • Harrier25 says:

For the few, not the many. God, wasn’t that the 2019 Labour slogan for their election pledge? 😂

        • ben says:

It seems that the refunds were mainly for people charged the £99 after the card closure notice was given ( ie in Oct & Nov). My and my wife’s cards ( charged in June and July ) haven’t been refunded and the points have continued to accumulate but not transferred. Creation adamantly refuse to refund the fee , even pro-rata , which seems completely wrong and IHG say they are powerless to help as it is “Creation’s decision”. Will probably escalate both complaints to Ombudsman when I get a deadlock letter , which I am still waiting for Creation to send despite several requests.

        • Mark M says:

          Probably vice versa!
But I guess this will be a battle of attrition until / unless Creation decide their effort is not worth the loss of reputation?

  • Robert says:

I’ve been through a couple of (not all) pages today so sorry if this is a repeat question: have people been getting shop small on some cards but not others? Is it being rolled out gradually, or do I need to chat with AMEX to get it manually loaded on the cards it’s missing from?

    • Graham Walsh says:

I’ve got it on my BAPP, but not on Platinum. People have said they have used the Chat facility and they were added. I must do that.

    • Will says:

I think it was like this in previous incarnations too, seems to load in batches.

  • Phil W says:

Quick Question – Is 1h20 an adequate amount of time to connect from LHR T5 to T3? Both flights are BA and single ticket. TIA

    • Graham Walsh says:

Pushing it, but you could jump the queue for the bus by showing your boarding pass etc.

    • ChrisC says:

      No.

The MCT for T5-T3 and vv is 90 minutes

BA systems will soon catch up with the below MCT time and rebook you.

This is not something you can try and beat by queue jumping.
