We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Bid on business upgrade with Etihad: how long before check-in is your seat confirmed if you’ve been successful?
2 weeks til departure and still showing as “Offer Received” so still enough time for things to happen but curious if anybody has had any experience on this being super last minute and are you made aware if you haven’t been successful?

    • Shaw West says:

We got the bid confirmed only 24hours before the flight

    • Ste C says:

When I bid for an upgrade with Virgin a couple of years ago I found out the day before the flight via email.

    • Gary says:

Last time I used plus grade with Eithad it was 1 day before. credit card was charged before email notification was sent though.

    • Polly says:

Malaysian are great with those bids. We paid £50 each ug from dps to kul couple of years ago. Great big comfy J seats.

    • VerdantBacon says:

Bid on BNE to LHR in early 2020, was notified of success on the BNE to AUH leg about 24 hours before flight was due to take off, was notified about 10 hours later of success on the AUH to LHR leg.

Had also bid on the outbound LHR to BNE but was unsuccessful and was not notified, though at check in they did move us to the front Y cabin, I think they call it economy space? Larger seat pitch and you get the row to yourself.

Etihad Guest Silver at the time, not sure how much of a difference that makes on bidding.

One of Amex Platinum has Spend £1 get 50MR. Also BAPP with spend £1 get 50 Avios 🙂

    • Shaw West says:

Looks like the Amex Black Friday deal :))

    • Super Secret Stuff says:

Same, they are really splashing the cash with the Black Friday budget this year!

    • John says:

Had the spend £1 offer on the same card in the past 2 months, first time 50 avios and second time 100 avios.

Oct and Nov statements are for £1

    • Rum says:

I am more annoyed at BA… what good is this offer if the points never even turn up in your avios account balance!

  • Hotinnewcastlesays says:

Have 6500 emirates skyward points in my family account due to expire next year, just tried to convert them to heathrow rewards but not able to – any suggestions of what other have spent their pooled miles on?

    • Shaw West says:

You could purchase from the Emirates Shop or book an easyJet flight

      • Hotinnewcastlesays says:

        Thanks, will look into that

        • Hotinnewcastlesays says:

Didnt get anywhere with either option unfortunately, easyjet needs 8k and emirates store only brings up my personal balance to spend from rather than the pooled family miles.

  • Shaw West says:

It would be nice to have a like button for the comments 😀

  • Darren says:

Anyone have a Lufthansa account. I have been unable to log in over the last 24 hours. Can’t see anything on Flyertalk about it.

  • Shaw West says:

Got Email from Amex Travel today. My return flight schedule is changed. The reservation now has added note “Agent comments: No service fee will be charged for this schedule change. “

    • Shaw West says:

Checked my booking under virgin and it says “SCHEDULE CHANGE
Just a reminder that there has been a change to your itinerary. If you’re ok with this, then you don’t need to do anything and we’ll see you on board. If this change doesn’t work for you then please contact us if you’ve booked with us directly.
If your booking has been booked through a travel agency, please call them to discuss other options. “

      • Shaw West says:

Bit confused here, Does it mean I can change my flight free of cost? Or just free of change fees?

    • Lady London says:

Check carefully old and new flight numbers If different that’s actually a cancellation not a reschedule. As a cancellation you would have a pretty much free range as to choose another convenient date that suits you, to reschedule your whole trip to not just the bit that was cancelled by them. This right supersedes any airline rules

  • Russel says:

A bit of help with my dilemma please. I have a sum of MR points which I could transfer for Bonvoy or Virgin.l(I have plenty of Avios) Virgin would give me almost 7 legs of an upper class flights(using upgrade vouchers) to my usual flight destination. Bonvoy would give me 3 nights in a high end hotel. I would not spend cash on either of these options.(I’m happy to travel easyJet or stay in cheap hotels if not for points) Which would you choose?

    • Mick S says:

Only my opinion, but airlines transfers all the way for me.

But if you’ve already got the avios then I think you’ve answered your own question, take the hotel – unless of course you are desperately keen to travel on Virgin.

    • r* says:

Id leave them in MR unless youre needing to close the acct or will be using the points right away.

Marriott will devalue next year and the financial situation of Virgin has been up for debate for the last 18 months.

    • Anuj says:

I’m similar to you, imo I would transfer to bonvoy. As someone who doesn’t mind going in easyjet, many airline redemptions seem pointless after I factor in taxes (obviously rfs is a different matter).

  • Ollie says:

Trying to book reward flight from BCN to LON but it’s showing as 20k Avios each way business, whereas Seat Spy suggests it should be 12750. Any ideas?
