We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Hello All – going for the status match with ITA. It asks for ID and frequent -flyer copies “front and rear”. Does this mean what it says ? Not a techy so forgive me if a silly question, and don’t want to mess up. Thanks.
    PS – Polly – keep smiling !!

    • Mrs FCP says:

Front and rear of card, although I sent a web screen shot and they accepted that.

  • C says:

How do you obtain a medical certificate for mask exemption if the GPs do not provide one?

    • David says:

Is there a valid medical reason for not wearing a mask except perhaps for people with learning difficulties/ dementia ?

    • Andrew says:

If you have a medical reason for a mask exemption, but it’s your GP’s policy not to issue one, then you should really change GP.

If it’s a lifestyle choice… Be mindful of any conflict between the information supplied to the travel insurers and what you tell a new GP to secure a medical exemption certificate.

      • C says:

I don’t think changing GP would help as it’s a gov requirement for all GPs not to issue a medical certificate.

It’s silly as the airlines want one but the guidelines say no to issue one.

        • QwertyKnowsBest says:

Loved the Tweet ‘if you don’t like.masks you are going to hate body bags’!

    • Ryan says:

Have you tired going down the route of 119 / ordering the official exemption form?

    • Super Secret Stuff says:

Ask for a letter stating what conditions you have, the difficulties it can cause and there oppinion if you should be considered an exception to all mask requirements.

Certificate sounds formal and makes GP surgeries panic, a letter outlining the situation anf there oppinion is fine. Althought you may have to pay

    • Jenny says:

there is no certification, gps cant give you one and if you do ask, they will simply charge. you admin fee for a letter typed up. you can however self-except yourself

      • Ryan says:

There is an official NHS Pass exemption form now, phone 119 and they’ll send it in the post

        • C says:

That’s for exemption from vaccines and testing isn’t it. Don’t see anything about mask exemption

  • Jason says:

Does anyone know if you receive double tier points on a booking made in First with BA holidays double tier points offer? I can only find reference to CW.

  • N says:

I’ve got about 3000 Eurostar points in sub-100 point balances across about 40 accounts.

Is there anything I can do with these or do I need to write them off until the balance goes over 100?

  • r* says:

When complaints have been raised with creation for non-transference of voucher and points, when they ask what your expected resolution should be has everyone just been asking for the voucher/points or also referencing the cash value in lieu of a voucher (ie cost of the ic bora bora where I was planning on using the voucher)? Or does that come later if it goes to ombudsman? They have just charged me my £99 fee.

    • stevenhp1987 says:

I mentioned wanting the points, and if they are unable to, the points value (I valued 1 IHG point at 1p as that’s what IHG sell the points for).

    • Anna says:

They haven’t asked me this – I haven’t actually had any response to the effect that they won’t be issuing points and free nights, just an acknowledgement of my enquiry about whether they will be.

      • Anna says:

I don’t actually want specifics from them until I stop using the cards next week; then I can truly say I hadn’t been informed that the benefits had been withdrawn.

    • Colin MacKinnon says:

      Hi,

I have started the complaint for no free night on my account (hadn’t made any transaction on the card since August, but spent enough to requalify as Spire).

On the phone, was told they could take my complaint there and then and they asked what I wanted as resolution. I replied Free Night Cert or the cash for the room I would have redeemed on.

Their confirmation letter of my complaint is on Page 6 of yesterday’s chat.

I have left the cost of the room vague as yet, since I am hoping they will just give the free night cert (because I already have biz class tickets booked to Tahiti and you can book long in advance with UK IHG free night certs for the ICs there). My flight booking also show I am not just looking for the most expensive IHG hotel!

If it goes to FOS, as I expect, then wife will claim the cost to buy her points and the cost to replace her free night in Tahiti.

    Morning
Any news on a possible BA sale to East Coast America?
She who runs much better than me, has just been notified she has qualified for the Boston Marathon based on good for age previous marathon (Chicago)
the race is April 18th Easter Monday. So trying to make best use of BA/IHG or Hilton.
As it is Easter the biz seats are gone, thats fine, so looking at options, including the day flight back
    thanks all.

    • Andrew says:

If the notifications have just gone out, book the hotel rooms before the USA & Canada read their emails.

    • Anna says:

Points and cash prices are back on the way up for next Spring (I booked the IC for the end of March when it went from 61k points to 42k, it’s now back up to at 55k) so I’d try and get something flexible sooner rather than later. Emyr might have some options for cash bookings.

    • jj says:

Congratulations – entry to Boston is a big achievement.

  • Russel says:

Are there any charges to use metalic bendy beardy for hmrc?

    • ianM says:

Does Beardy charge fees for foreign exchange for purchases or cash advances thru bendy in USA?

      • Andrew says:

My Virgin Money card processes at Mastercard rates with no additional fees worldwide for purchases.

There are quite a variety of white label Clydesdale cards though.

        • Andrew H says:

I thought that was only Euros, Romanian LEK and Swedish Krona?

          • Andrew says:

From the back of the statement:-

“>Non Sterling Transaction Fee (for foreign currency transactions) 0.00% of transaction.

We will not charge this if the transaction is in Euros, Swedish Kronor or Romanian Lei and it takes place in the European Union Area (EEA)

            >Cash Advance Transaction Fee 5%”

So I guess all varieties of Clydesdale cards have the “We will not charge this if” element, but certain types, like mine, are 0% worldwide anyway.

      • Reney says:

You should be ok on purchases via bendy but I think depending on which bendy you have there is a limit. Also there is a charge for the weekend transaction.

        Don’t know about cash advances.

    • Reney says:

On the original question. Bendy should not charge you, but there is a monthly limit being implemented from next month. After which you will be charged.

Not sure what card you are planning to use under it? Virgin changed their T&C and it was unclear what it meant in practice. The IT change needed appears not to have caught up yet.

      • Russel says:

        Thank you Reney.
So this charge is after 10k spend of which type?
Do atm work fee free beardy under bendy?

        • Reney says:

I think it was 1.5% on HMRC, NS&I and paying off other cards after the 10k limit. There might be others that I don’t remember.

I don’t think I have ever tried using an ATM with beardy so can’t tell you.

    Hotels.com – double stamps

    Coupon RWD2BF21

    • Andrew H says:

And 20% off at many hotels – Sofitel T5 included; swayed my decision about a 3:30am drive or an overnighter… (assuming both Munich and Austria are open in 3 weeks’ time….)
