We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

I’m trying to trigger an Amex spend in a short space of time (days).
Been attempting to use hotels.com pay now feature but can’t get it to work and been trying for 3 days in a row now (including using chat which was more than useless). The amount is around £5k so not really one for supermarket vouchers.
    Any other options?

    • John says:

What do you mean you can’t get it to work?

Not all hotels accept pay through hotels.com immediately, but most do.

Maybe your account has been restricted, if so make a new one.

      • Chris says:

I’ve tried it logged in to Hotels.com, logged out. Incognito browser mode, different browsers. Smaller payment amounts. Phoned Amex – who can’t see an issue. It fails every time on form submission with the error saying I haven’t completed the security code (which plainly I have).
I thought it was a bug, but wonder if it’s more linked to the card itself.

    • Phil says:

Refundable BA flight in first and then cancel?

  • GaryE says:

Hi – just trying to do my UK PLF and i have entered my mobile number incorrectly – included leading 0 – there doesn’t appear to be a way to amend this and only have one email address – any one else encountered this and found a workaround

    • Anna says:

They don’t need your phone number, I wouldn’t worry about it if the form has accepted what you’ve entered. Why would one email address be an issue?

    • Rob says:

      Really wouldn’t worry.

    • pauline says:

if you do this when creating an account it wont allow you to move forward until you are verified and you cant be verified as your tel number is incorrect so start again but do it without creating an account and you will find you cant go wrong with the tel number as it has boxes and clearly shows how to format the number

  • Anna says:

I’m getting an error when trying to move MR points to avios – could this be due to the current BA IT situation? Annoying as the bonus 10k on gold has just hit and I want to transfer them and close the card!

    • Anna says:

Actually I’ve got loads of avios – if I transfer them to Marriott would that count as activity? Not managed a stay since March 2020!

  • Cathy says:

Thank you to everyone who replied to my post last week following my delayed flight (27 hours), missing bags and awful customer service from BA. In summary BA didn’t follow correct procedure with reporting our bags after the cancelled shuttle flight MAN-LHR and therefore, they would never have been delivered to us on holiday. BA were insisting they were not traced yet when AA had them at Miami with no instructions what to do with them and awaiting on BA instructions! With the help of AA we located them ourselves from an ‘on hold’ storage room in MIA which we were allowed to look through after check in for our return flight. Our shuttle back up to Manchester was delayed an hour even though boarded on time as the flight deck announced due to a shortage of ground staff at LHR the bags from the incoming passengers who arrived over an hour earlier were still on aircraft and they were waiting for removal so ours could be loaded on. Until they recruit, I would be wary of a short connection time. I will register my complaint and claim for out of pocket expenses later this week when I have the energy for the next battle.

    • Anna says:

What a shambles, @Cathy, glad you’re home safely anyway. Don’t forget to claim for your EU/UK261 compo as well, it sounds like you deserve every penny! I would also ask for extra for your spoiled holiday as well.

      • Cathy says:

Definitely will. 10 day holiday without bags was a right pain. The continuous shopping as we understood they would be delivered the next day, then next day etc, we gave up by day 7 and did our last shop. Stayed in a couple of Hiltons who were great, upgraded to suits in both, so more room to shampoo our smalls! Macy’s were sympathetic and gave me more makeup than what I purchased.

        • Polly says:

          Cathy,
You know what, we really all need our full wits about us these days to navigate what was once simply called travel. These connection rules do complicate matters somewhat. More and more, you have to take action yourselves at these airports to ensure stuff is sorted. Glad you got there in the end. Nightmare.

          • Cathy says:

Thanks Polly, it was a complete shambles. I know an aircraft going tech happens but the incompetence following that was ridiculous. They had a lady meet the flight at LHR barking instructions, telling over 100 people to stand against a wall and follow her rules, advised she only found out about us 10 mins ago and nobody was going anywhere today! After 20 mins we advised we were going to rebooking as we established she wanted us all together to walk us all to rebooking, I think looking at the passengers, most if not all are capable of navigating themselves to rebooking. We were given a voucher for the hoppa bus but the next one was 50 mins. There was an elderly lady on the flight travelling home solo in a wheelchair dumped at the bus stop and it was really cold. We asked if she wanted to come with us in a taxi, she was so grateful and should not have been left in the first place. They asked us to return in the evening to collect bags, had to go through the staff security which was a waste of time, it turns out the bags stayed on the stricken aircraft in MAN for a further 24 hours, it just ended up like some carry on film. It got much worse, but It’s too dull to explain, saying that it is really trivial compared to what you’re going through, it makes me feel sick to think how things can escalate when you had the stated tests with a negative result. I do hope things get sorted for you soon.

        • Lady London says:

This feels like 20,000 avios each for the ruination of your holiday. Having to wash out stuff every evening, waste time locating shops and shopping most days, time spent watching out for uodates and chasing when there weren’t any…

After refund of al extra expenses and EU261 compo I’d be going after avios chunk for negative effects on holiday Cash would be nice but let’s not get carried away avios will be easier to get I suspect.

          • Cathy says:

I will report back but suspect it will take some time. Rather sad when the airline not responsible helps more than the one that should have taken responsibility!

          • Anna says:

A couple of years ago we got 10k avios each for not having time to go in the lounge due to a delay – I’d be claiming 30k+ for the ruined holiday!

  • Ryanfozzie says:

    Morning all!

Need a co-working space in Edinburgh on Friday for the day. Does anyone know of anywhere free / if you buy a coffee you get a space?

I think I saw a while ago WeWork free day passes but I can’t find anything about it….

    • MM says:

Dont know if Wework is still doing passes. However, Sheraton is a good place to work with a coffee. Quiet and comfortable ususally. Otherwise Royal Scot Club also lets in non-members sometimes for coffee.

      • Ryanfozzie says:

So there are 4 of us and we need somewhere from 9am till 1pm, do you think either of these places would be a little funny us staying that long?

    • Chris says:

I did a day rate at the Moxy recently and I noticed there were two meeting rooms. They were locked when I tried to snoop in but don’t know if it just a case of requesting them as a resident, if that’s that the case then it could be a £49 solution

  • Chrism20 says:

Good morning from the Novotel in Liverpool where at half past midnight the fire alarms went off.

After trudging down nine flights of stairs and following the signs for the fire exit I ended up trapped in the kitchen and relying on another guest passing to push the button on the wall at the other side of the door to be released.

Eventually made it to a pitch black reception area where everyone had congregated and the one member of staff was trying his hardest to sort the alarm.

Apparently alarm activated in a bed so I’m sure it was nothing to do with the kitchen smelling like someone had burnt their dinner 🙄

I hope it’s ‘holiday’ as in when I want to go away and not ‘holiday’ as in the US definition of christmas and the new year.

      Still not long to wait

It’s often the usual Poundland selection of restricted view seats but I’m sure someone can find a use for them.

    • Diydegsy says:

Hi just booked excellent seats for £40 each on a Saturday and no restricted views so all good.
